Matt Le Tissier, Fatima Whitbread and James Cracknell will battle it out for Eternal Glory on ITV

The likes of Matt Le Tissier and Fatima Whitbread will battle it out for Eternal Glory in ITV's new series.

Eight sporting stars will face off against each other in a series of challenges for the new show, which begins next month.

James Cracknell, Jade Johnson, Liz McColgan, Shane Williams, Gail Emms and Christian Malcolm will also compete on Eternal Glory.

Richard Bacon hosts the series, with sports scientist and Olympian Professor Greg Whyte providing expert analysis.

The sporting greats will have their mental and physical strength, agility, strategy and skill tested over the course of six one-hour episodes.

Each show will conclude with a 'night duel' in which the two lowest scoring athletes go head-to-head to decide who stays in the competition. One athlete will leave at the end of each show until the champion of the series is crowned.

Past Olympics stars join London 2012 competitors at UK premiere of Salute

Olympic gold medallists Tessa Sanderson (pictured above), Denise Lewis, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and other medal-winning Olympians such as Jamie Baulch and Mark Foster joined London 2012 competitors Christian Malcolm and Dwain Chambers at the UK film premiere of Salute.

Former World Champion boxer Chris Eubanks and former top-flight footballers Garth Crooks and Paul Elliot Cbe also attended.

Salute is a documentary about the untold story of the three Olympians on the winning podium at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City - Tommie Smith and Jon Carlos, aided by Australian silver medallist Peter Norman - who made a stand for human rights.

Gold medallist Smith and bronze winner Carlos raised their fists in a controversial Black Power salute and all three wore badges for The Olympic Project for Human Rights.

The array of sports stars attending the premiere were paying tribute to the famous trio.

As expected, Hop continued to dominate the box office over the weekend with an estimated $21.6 million take. It should continue to do well over the next few weeks as the holiday approaches.

Meanwhile, Arthur, Russell Brand's other effort, opened to a disappointing $12.6 million - well under the projected $18 million from the studio. This may lead to the end of Hollywood's love affair with Brand as he just doesn't seem to be leading man material as he can't open a movie. His Get Me to the Greek opened to $17.5 million and it was rated R - Arthur's PG-13 should have helped the film reach a broader audience but for once taste prevailed and moviegoers decided to pass.
