'God's Own Country' wins top prize at Edinburgh Film Festival
Daphne, Glory also scoop prizes.

Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country has won the top prize at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The well-received drama, which premiered in Sundance and had its UK premiere in Edinburgh, took the Michael Powell Award for best British feature film.

The prize was awarded by a jury consisting of composer David Arnold, International Film Festival Rotterdam artistic director Bero Beyer, and Bafta-nominated film and television writer Andrea Gibb.

The jury commented: “We present the Michael Powell Award to God’s Own Country, directed by Francis Lee, a film with a singularity of storytelling and consistency of vision. Assured direction with raw and endearing performances result in a film that has an authenticity that is both tender and brutal, a juxtaposition of landscape and emotion, which explores the question of what it means to be a man.”

On hearing the news, director Francis Lee said: “I am thrilled with this

Nails review – spooky shocker is a slumber party shoo-in

In Dennis Bartok’s debut horror flick, Shauna Macdonald is an injured athletics coach who learns the hideous secret of the hospital in which she is a patient

Writer-director Dennis Bartok’s mildly diverting debut horror film is a cheerfully derivative exercise in jump scares, dark shadows and low-budget-driven aesthetics. In Dublin, hyper-fit athletics coach Dana (Shauna Macdonald) is hit by a car while out running. She wakes up with a respirator in her throat and serious injuries in a spooky hospital that hardly seems to have any patients, even though her nurse, Trevor (comedian Ross Noble), complains bitterly about being overworked.

As Dana slowly recovers and learns to use a laptop to communicate with her caregivers, husband (Steve Wall), and teen daughter (Leah McNamara), she learns about the hospital’s hideous secret: years ago, a nurse there killed children, died and then seemingly transmogrified into a variant on internet-meme-turned-urban-myth Slender Man,

Danger Mouse episode 1 review: Danger Mouse Begins... Again!

Danger Mouse is back! This slick, self-aware, modern revival boasts plenty of action and jokes...

It’s been over a year since the BBC announced it was remaking Danger Mouse, a show which has a special place in the hearts of a generation of children. Understandably, there’ve been nerves; can Danger Mouse thrive without David Jason and Terry Scott? Will the new team stick with what made the show great in the first place? Is there a place for Danger Mouse on television today? Will this ruin childhoods?

Based on the first episode of the revived series, the answer to all of those questions is tentatively ‘yes’. Except that last one; as we’ve said before on this site, even the worst remake can’t have any genuine impact on your childhood. And, happily, Danger Mouse is far from being the worst remake.

Fans of the old show will

Julian Assange on Raindance jury

WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films

Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.

The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.

It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.

Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link

Exclusive: Saw May Return in the Future!
Original creator Leigh Whannell is open to continuing the franchise down the road, once he dabbles in other genres first

We recently spoke to original Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell about their new haunted house thriller Insidious, which is in theaters this Friday. Of course we had to ask them about the continuation of Saw. This past October, Lionsgate gleefully promised that Saw 3D would be the final film in this lucrative horror series. But as we suspected, that may not be true.

In fact, Leigh Whannell is very open to returning to the Saw franchise somewhere down the road, once he gets a political horror comedy made, and a children's fantasy film off the ground first.

Here is what he had to say.

I know you have been asked this question ten thousand times, but do you guys ever think you will come back to Saw? This
