Puzzle review by Awais Irfan.

Puzzle review

To kick off this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival and our own coverage of the fest here on the site. Scotland’s very own Kelly Macdonald brings her latest starring role as the timid Agnes in Marc Turtletaub’s Puzzle for the Opening Gala film but is it worth your time?

Agnes (Macdonald) lives for her husband Louie (David Denman) and two sons Gabe (Austin Abrams) and Ziggy (Bubba Weiler); she works to routine, so much so that she is able to count down her alarm and predict every word her husband says as he asks for 5 more minutes in bed every morning. Her life is a content but restricted one as Agnes lives to

Puzzle Review – Eiff 2018

In his debut feature as a director, producer Marc Turtletaub offers a slow-paced, charming and hugely engaging story about a downtrodden housewife who finds a new lease of life when she discovers that she has a talent for completing jigsaw puzzles with greater ease than most. Adapted from Natalia Smirnoff’s much-loved 2009 Argentinian movie of the same name, and from a script by Oren Moverman, Puzzle offers a rare starring role for British actress Kelly Macdonald who is as fantastic here as anyone who has seen her turn in the critically acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire, would have hoped.

Agnes (Kelly Macdonald) has never been anything but a docile suburban housewife from the moment she married mechanic Louie (David Denman). For years, the mother of two teenage boys spent every waking hour at the beck and call of her brood and their loving, yet ungrateful, father. The daughter of Catholic Hungarian immigrants,

Puzzle review – Kelly Macdonald sees the big picture in jigsaw indie

A suburban New York mother hemmed in by chores finds unfashionably analogue freedom in jigsaw puzzles in this modest yet touching drama

Compare how vital Kelly Macdonald was to 1996’s Trainspotting with her cursory presence in 2017’s boysy sequel, and you’ll have some sense of how the British film industry has underestimated her. Macdonald has always been a supremely sympathetic performer, but her mousy air may have been seen as a big-screen limitation. She scuttled round in subservient roles, before escaping pantry duty via HBO’s Boardwalk Empire: a wife part, yes, but one that proved steelier than first imagined over that five-season run. TV arcs bend towards their own form of justice.

Puzzle, the offbeat Us indie opening this year’s Edinburgh film festival, finds Macdonald tending house yet again – though here it’s an acknowledgement of wasted potential, a corner from which her character Agnes needs to be sprung.

Puzzle – Irrfan Khan Releases New Poster plus we have stills!

Irrfan Khan‘s much anticipated new film Puzzle has just released its new theatrical poster. Khan has also taken to social media to promote the film and has posted this newly released poster. He stars opposite three-time Golden Globe nominee Kelly Macdonald and acclaimed actor David Denman. Their new film has already earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Puzzle is a closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family or the tight-knit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. That begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being very, very good at it.

Stepping out of her domestic bubble to pursue her new hobby, Agnes meets Robert (Irrfan Khan), a wealthy,

Eiff highlights by Amber Wilkinson

As Edinburgh gears up for its 72nd year, we select six of the best at this year's fest, which kicks off with Puzzle, featuring a magnetic central performance by Kelly Macdonald as a housewife who decides to expand her horizons. The choices I've put in this article are films I've already seen and can recommend wholeheartedly - tell us about your favourites over on our Facbeook page.

Loveling Karine Teles and Otavio Muller in Loveling Photo: Bianca Aun This hopeful and observant celebration of Brazilian family life was one of my favourite films at Sundance this year.

Featuring a finely calibrated performance from Karine Teles (who co-wrote the screenplay) as a mum facing up to the fact her eldest son is leaving home, it captures the highs and lows of motherhood and the emotional swings that can sometimes happen within minutes of one another.

Teles told me: "Bottom line, the message we wanted to convey.

2018 Emmy awards nominations ballot: See all 34 Best TV Movie contenders from ‘The Beach House’ to ‘Zombies’

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 34 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. Last year, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Unlike comedy and drama series, which are simply listed on the ballot by name, the television

"What kind of a princess are you?" Disney has debuted a full-length official trailer for the animated sequel Wreck-It Ralph 2, titled in full Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. This time he follows Vanellope, voiced again by Sarah Silverman, into the internet and there they meet the "netizens", getting in all kinds of trouble and, as the title says, they wind up breaking the internet. The full cast features Taraji P. Henson, Kelly Macdonald, Kristen Bell, Mandy Moore, Alan Tudyk, Jane Lynch, Idina Menzel, Jack McBrayer, and Jodi Benson. This looks like a worthy sequel, going bigger and better but still maintaining the heart

May 25, 1979 – A Look Back At Ridley Scott’s Alien

Friday, May 25th, 1979. A cinema anniversary I celebrate every year with a screening of Ridley Scott’s Alien.

Since my initial revisiting of the movie in 2014 for the 35th anniversary, 20th Century Fox continues the franchise with more prequels including Alien Covenant in 2017 (Trailer), and more to follow in the timeline leading audiences right up to Alien. Prometheus (2012) starred Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba, was well received by critics and subsequently a box office hit.

The marketing of Covenant invoked spine-tingling chills when the initial posters were released. The tagline from the 1979 film, “In space no one can hear you scream” is still foreboding, but “Run” and Hide” with images of the Xenomorph and Egg were terrifying and a warning of whats to come.

Fans have seen the birth of Alien Day, celebrated on April 26 and a new Aliens story with the recent comic book series “Aliens: Dust to Dust.

The Evolution of Kelly Macdonald From Trainspotting to Now

Kelly Macdonald has come a long way from her role as underage seductress Diane in Trainspotting. Back then it might have been believed that she would find a few roles and then move on out of Hollywood’s spotlight, perhaps being seen as little more than a flash in the pan. But Kelly managed to hold onto her career and continued onward towards other roles that will be mentioned in just a bit. Initially she was working as a barmaid in Glasgow when she happened to notice a leaflet that had information about an open casting session for Trainspotting. That was
