‘Fugitives’ DVD Review

Stars: Dominic Purcell, Luke Mably, Marie Avgeropoulos, Claudia Church, Chelsea Edmundson, Stephen Lang, Tricia Helfer | Written by Shane Dax Taylor, Chad Law | Directed by Shane Dax Taylor

A genre-standard bickering couple take their woes to a small island in the Bahamas, where they hope to patch things up and get back on the right track. That track puts them on the same path as two other couples; the charismatic William and Mary (Stephen Lang and Claudia Church) and the horny Max and Nina (Dominic Purcell and Marie Avgeropoulos). While out wining and dining with the former, their beach house is ransacked and robbed. But whodunit? And will they stop at robbery?

With a story which slow-burns like an incense candle, ambling along at a languid pace, Fugitives (aka Isolation) is not the action-heavy gunfight-palooza its cast and synopsis might suggest. Even the normally terrifying Stephen Lang is in laid-back mode here,

Chosen review – starchy heroics in ponderous second world war film

This unfocused drama about a Hungarian Jew who joins the resistance in 1944 only ever scratches the surface. And Harvey Keitel’s appearance is disheartening

When he isn’t pimping Winston Wolf out to Direct Line, it’s disheartening to see a great actor like Harvey Keitel in the Werther’s Original role here: the white-haired “Papi” narrating to his grandson how things were in the bad old dog days of the second world war. The framing device, whatever the commercial reasons, also has the unfortunate effect of sapping a degree of urgency from this ponderous and unfocused 1944-set tale.

Hungarian Jewish lawyer Sonson (Luke Mably) is already in a forced labour camp when his wife’s sudden death from breast cancer pushes him into actively resisting the Nazis. He’s lit by love’s undying flame, walks to Poland in a third of the time it would take a lesser man,

Trailer for Tropical Island Thriller 'Isolation' Featuring Stephen Lang

"Do you two ever get lonely out here?" Lionsgate has released a trailer for an indie thriller titled Isolation, from director Shane Dax Taylor. This based-on-a-true story thriller about "modern day pirates" premiered at one small film festival in 2015 and never went anywhere, but it's finally getting a VOD release this spring. Isolation stars Tricia Helfer and Luke Mably as a couple on a vacation to a quiet part of the Bahamas. One day they wake up to find themselves under attack from a local. The cast includes Dominic Purcell, Marie Avgeropoulos, Claudia Church, Chelsea Edmundson, and Stephen Lang as another gnarly bad guy. Unsurprisingly this looks instantly forgettable, which explains why it took so long to be released. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Shane Dax Taylor's Isolation, direct from YouTube: Hoping to restore their flagging marriage, Lydia (Tricia Helfer) and Creighton (Luke Mably) journey to a remote island in the sun-drenched Bahamas.

Official Trailer for WWII Action Film 'Chosen' Featuring Harvey Keitel

"An ordinary man, but the circumstances were extraordinary..." Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the WWII action film Chosen, from director Jasmin Dizdar, starring legendary actor Harvey Keitel as an unassuming Hungarian lawyer who ends up leading an anti-Nazi resistance during the war. English actor Luke Mably plays the "young" version of Keitel seen in flashbacks during the war. There is quite a bit of action in this, which is probably the main selling point, but I'm curious how much takes place in the present and how much really takes place in the past (during the war). Also starring Ana Ularu. Even though this is direct-to-dvd, if you're a fan of WWII films it's worth checking out. Not sure if it's any good, might be solid. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Jasmin Dizdar's Chosen, direct from Lionsgate's YouTube: Screen legend Harvey Keitel stars as Sonson, a

The top 25 underappreciated films of 2009

Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 20 Feb 2014 - 05:40

The unloved films of 2009 provide the focus in our final list of the 2000s' overlooked greats...

The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.

Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

25. A Perfect Getaway

Combat Hospital Season Finale Review: "Do No Harm"

  • TVfanatic
Just as I really got into Combat Hospital, it's over. "Do No Harm" was the season finale and it left us with plenty of compelling storylines to consider.

As I watched this episode, I sincerely hoped this wouldn't be the last time I saw Luke Mably's Simon, as it's questionable whether the series will be picked up for a second season. I wasn't sure how much potential this character had when I viewed the pilot, but several weeks later, I only want more.

Simon was simply adorable as he tried to do the decent thing and not take advantage of a vulnerable Rebecca. Of course, it didn't take much convincing from her to push him over the edge. The snippet of a love scene that we got only whetted my appetite for the real thing.

And I couldn't believe Simon picked up a book and pretended to be reading

Combat Hospital Review: Why Me?

  • TVfanatic
"Reason to Believe" was easily one of the best Combat Hospital's of the season. From its tense Hurt Locker-like opening - with the horror of a bomb disposal gone wrong - to its emotional questions of faith, this hour hooked me from moment one and never let go.

We found Chaplain Marjorie Plotell having a crisis of faith. Apparently war is Hell, even on God. Somehow, as she watched Simon profess his arrogance in his skills as a surgeon, it only made her feel more inadequate.

Simon was in rare form tonight. He labeled Dobbs' pieces of broken vertebrae "annoying" and was sure he could save the use of the man's arms. Thankfully, Simon's skill and talent were able to keep up with his ego since it was a surgery he'd never before performed.

Just when I was thinking it must be amazing to have that much belief in yourself,
