Zoe Kazan Elevates “The Kindness Of Strangers”

Zoe Kazan Elevates “The Kindness Of Strangers”
How much weight do you put into a strong performance within a film that has its fair share of issues? Can a single turn lift up an entire project? Honestly, it really depends on the movie and the acting turn in question. Sometimes, it can be enough to warrant a recommendation, while at other times, it still falls a little bit short. In the case of this week’s new release The Kindness of Strangers, we’re faced with a similar situation. The flick is a mixed bag, though its ensemble cast is led by a wonderful performance by Zoe Kazan. In the end, she does manage to drag this one across the finish line, generating enough goodwill for a mild recommendation. The movie is a drama that takes its title largely literally. The lynchpin is Clara (Kazan), an abused wife who packs up her two sons Anthony (Jack Fulton

Berlin Review: Lone Scherfig’s ‘The Kindness of Strangers’ Drowns in Mawkish Sentimentality

Where to begin with a film like The Kindness of Strangers? Well, Lone Scherfig’s new ensemble romance, which inexplicably opened the Berlin Film Festival this week, is certainly not lacking in good intentions, nor is it lacking in mawkish sentimentality either. Indeed, as its dizzyingly sincere title suggests it is about as maudlin and hopelessly idealistic a film as one is likely to see in 2019, concerning a beleaguered and perfectly sympathetic mother of two who goes on the run from an abusive husband and finds goodwill in the most unlikely of places–and we’re talking unlikely in the most straight-faced of manners.

Strangers is the tenth feature film of Scherfig’s thirty-year career, a body of work that began on Danish television in the ’80s before having its crowning success with An Education in 2009, a film that rode the wave of Carey Mulligan’s mercurial breakthrough performance all

‘Rampage’: Inside the Globe-Trotting Mission to Compose Its Score (Exclusive Video)

‘Rampage’: Inside the Globe-Trotting Mission to Compose Its Score (Exclusive Video)
Composer Andrew Lockington took a decidedly international approach to his music for the Dwayne Johnson actioner “Rampage,” including traveling to Costa Rica to record the sounds of wild howler monkeys and employing a Ugandan children’s choir.

He credits director Brad Peyton — his collaborator on four films including the 2015 hit “San Andreas” — with encouraging creativity and fresh thinking, as he discusses in this exclusive video. The score also features large orchestra, processed brass and ethnic percussion and vintage computer-game electronics.

The Canadian-born composer is best known for his epic scores for “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” its sequel “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” and the disaster film “San Andreas.”

At the Box Office, “Rampage” opened at No. 1 with $34.5 million from 4,101 theaters. In its second week, the movie is looking like it will claim the runner-up slot, pulling in $18 million. Internationally, “Rampage” has already earned $114.1 million.

'Rampage' Used Real Apes for Its Score

'Rampage' Used Real Apes for Its Score
For Rampage, composer Andrew Lockington went ape (literally).

Lockington used real monkeys for his score, a move that's appropriate, given that the Dwayne Johnson blockbuster's breakout star is George, a gigantic, albino gorilla brought to life by actor Jason Liles.

For Rampage, Lockington researched Polynesian rhythms and recorded gorillas, though it didn't go as planned.

"I read an article in National Geographic that discussed how gorillas hum. It was fascinating, so I decided to work with the gorillas and record them," Lockington tells Heat Vision.

Lockington wasn't pleased with the end result, but it led to another discovery.

"Ultimately, the humming wasn't that...

Rampage Trailer #2 Has The Rock in a Tag Team Match with a Monster Ape

Warner Bros. has released a second full trailer for Rampage, which includes some exciting new footage. Fans get a glimpse at Malin Akerman's character, the villainous Claire Wyden, the creator of "Project Rampage," plus another look at the flying wolf Ralph, which is quite the change from the original video game. The end of this trailer may be the most intriguing, though, since it features Dwayne Johnson's character Davis Okoye teaming up with his old friend George the Ape to defeat the other Project Rampage monsters.

The Space Between Us review

Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson star in new sci-fi romance, The Space Between Us. Here's our review...

Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson play star-crossed lovers in The Space Between Us, a sci-fi romance which, shockingly, is not an adaptation of a novel by Nicholas Sparks or Stephenie Meyer. It's still full of the sort of contrivances that usually get explained away by some well-read fan as being faithful to the source material, but it comes from an original screenplay. However, when you realise that the screenplay was written by Allan Loeb, author of last year's feel-bad turkey Collateral Beauty, you might start to understand why it's utter nonsense.

In the not-too-distant future, 16-year-old Gardner Elliot (Butterfield) is the first human born on Mars. Raised by scientists and kept secret from the people of Earth by aerospace CEO Nathaniel Shepard (Gary Oldman), Gardner rails against his sheltered life and longs to

The Space Between Us Soundtrack Available Now

Sony Music Masterworks has released The Space Between Us – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and physically on CD. The album will also release on vinyl at a later date. The album features original songs by Ingrid Michaelson and the movie’s original score by Andrew Lockington (San Andreas, Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters).

The score was comprised of orchestral elements and salvaged items from junk yards to create unique sounds catered to the film’s story. This process of “upcycling” was in line with the film’s message about celebrating the beauty of our planet.

“I loved working with Peter [Chelsom, the director] and Richard [Lewis, producer]. They had a real vision as to what they wanted but also allowed me lots of freedom within that vision. It was a lot of fun to be a part of the movie from such an early stage,” remarks Ingrid Michaelson.

The album is now streaming on Spotify.

Review: San Andreas

We haven’t had a good old fashioned disaster movie in ages. The timing for San Andreas is interesting in that most Californians have stopped worrying about the big earthquake, focusing instead on the drought and/or the wildfires. But the seismologists have never stopped fretting that a quake, more devastating than the 1906 San Francisco event, is imminent. After several decades of “imminent” waiting, I can see how attention has wandered.

The Dwayne Johnson-led action film is a brutal reminder of just how much devastation is likely to result from such an earthquake. With CGI effects to enhance the imagery, this is a visual feast of destruction. And like every good epic in this genre, we follow the impossible efforts of one man not only to survive but to rescue his family despite the odds. As a result, the horrific reality is undercut by the muscular heroics. We know
