Former actor, trained at Vienna Conservatory, who began as a stage director in Germany. The son of a Jewish merchant, he moved to Switzerland in the early 1940's to evade Nazi persecution. He became that country's preeminent film maker as well as being director of the Schauspielhaus Zurich from 1933 to 1948. See more »
