Harry Levette was a retired dining car cook for the Union Pacific Railroad.
Sports and entertainment editor of the Los Angeles "California Eagle", a newspaper serving the African American community of Los Angeles and Southern California; he also as well as managing nightly vaudeville shows for the Tivoli Theater in Los Angeles. It was in that latter capacity that, in May 1931, he hired "Hattie McDaniel" [qv], newly arrived in town, to sing in one of his shows.
