Hugh was born in Oxford, England in 1959, to Patricia (Laidlaw) and William George Ranald Mundell "Ran" Laurie. He was educated at Eton College and Cambridge University. He met Emma Thompson at Cambridge in 1978 when both joined the Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe and was introduced to life long friend and comedy partner Stephen Fry by Emma in 1980. He is a well acclaimed actor, comedian, writer, and blues musician. Hugh is married to Jo Laurie (née Green) with whom he has three children. They live in London, England.
