On November 18, 2016, she began a GoFundMe campaign to raise $100,000 for Shelley Duvall, star of The Shining, who has been battling mental illness for decades. Kubrick saw Duvall that day with psychiatrist Dr. Phil McGraw on his syndicated Dr. Phil show. On the show, Duvall generally appeared to be dazed and exhausted, making very odd comments before admitting, "I'm very sick. I need help." In the episode, McGraw brings Duvall to a Los Angeles mental health clinic for treatment but she refuses the care and medication and flies back home to Texas. On November 22, Kubrick suddenly discontinued the funding effort and told all donors that they would have any donations refunded. Many accused the Church of Scientology of pressuring Kubrick to stop the funding, since the Church is strongly opposed to all forms of psychiatry and mental-health treatment. Kubrick maintains that according to Duvall's mother, her daughter is on social security disability and has benefits through SAG-AFTRA, both of which would be endangered by any large donations.
