Polish cinematographer Łukasz Żal (“Cold War”) scored an upset victory over director Alfonso Cuarón (Oscar Best Picture frontrunner “Roma”) in the battle of
black-and-white movies Saturday night at the 33rd annual Asc Awards (at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood).
While Cuarón was the first director ever nominated by the Asc in the theatrical category to shoot his own movie, it really wasn’t such a stretch that the cinematographers went with their own by rewarding Żal. He previously shared the Asc Spotlight Award in 2014 with co-dp Ryszard Lenczewski for their work on the black-and-white “Ida” (also directed by Pawel Pawlikowski).
In terms of the Oscar race, however, the Asc has only been an average bellwether, which tips in Cuarón’s favor in his bid to become the first director honored for shooting his own movie. Since 2000, only nine times have they matched (including Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki’s three consecutive wins).

“Cold War” cinematographer Łukasz Żal has won the top feature award from the American Society of Cinematographers.
“Cold War,” shot in black and white, topped Alfonso Cuaron’s digital 65mm black-and-white lensing of his own “Roma,” Linus Sandgren’s multi-format work on Damien Chazelle’s moonshot drama “First Man,” Matthew Libatique for Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born,” and Robbie Ryan for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
Zal was unable to attend the Saturday night ceremonies, now in their 33rd year. The gala took place in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles, with Ben Mankiewicz hosting.
Zal is also up for the Academy Award in cinematography along with Cuaron, Labitique, Ryan and Caleb Deschanel for “Never Look Away.” “Cold War,” directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, is set in Poland and Paris from the late 1940s until the 1960s and follows a musical director and a young singer...

The American Society of Cinematographers celebrated their 33rd annual Asc Awards and Cold War was honored with the marquee Theatrical Picture Prize while on the TV side Jon Joffin won for Beyond and Adriano Goldman won for the second year in a row for his work on The Crown.
With Cold War winning the top prize, it puts it at the head of the pack for Best Cinematography come Feb. 24 for the Academy Awards. The win is quite a surprise as Roma was a favorite.
TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz served as host for the evening which honored the best in cinematography. The ceremony had a visit from Quentin Tarantino who honored frequent collaborator Robert Richardson (who is currently working with him on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) with the Asc Lifetime Achievement Award and Jeff Jur received the Career Achievement in Television Award, which celebrated the group’s 100th anniversary.

Having now existed for more than a century, Arri shows no signs of slowing down. Founded in Munich on September 12, 1917 by August Arnold and Robert Richter, the company began by selling film accessories before shooting the Western films “Black Jack” and “The Train Robbers” within a few years of its foundation. After working as cameramen, Arnold and Richter found their true calling: developing their own cameras.
The first of these, the Kinarri 35, was a hand-cranked 35mm model that housed 100 feet of film and was first introduced in 1924. Though initially developed for in-house use, the camera was so popular that Arri began renting it out to other companies.
“I still find it amazing that this company was founded by two teenagers; they were so young that their parents had to sign the 2 incorporation documents,” says Dr. Jörg Pohlman, one of two Executive Board members at Arri Ag. “First and foremost they were film enthusiasts,...

Arri has unveiled the concept and prototype of a new educational camera to help students deal with the difficulty of modern digital cameras while learning film camera fundamentals such as image composition and exposure.
Arri group managing director, Franz Kraus, recently gave an address on the future of cinema at the annual conference of the International Association of Film and Television Schools (Cilect) in Munich.
He said, in terms of technical developments, Arri was always guided by the advantage for the viewer..
He explained that higher spatial resolution in the image would have hardly any effect on a viewer.s cinema experience, whereas improvements in brightness and contrast are far more likely to bring noticeable benefits..
Kraus additionally called for further debate on the use of higher frame rates, as these were essential for higher resolution and detail in moving images. Artefacts formed through data compression in digital cinema pipelines should also be considered.

Arri's managing director Franz Kraus has called into question the industry's inexorable push toward 4K by suggesting that HD content displayed on HD screens at equipment trade shows is not being shown at its optimum quality in order to compare unfavorably with 4K displays. “What annoys me, more than being asked about whether we are launching a 4K camera, is that at trade shows, HD quality is often being dumbed down, or not presented to its optimum quality, in order to make Ultra HD 4K look good,” Kraus said. “This is a bad trick because consumers will buy 4K

It may not have quite the same glamor of the star studded red carpet, but last night's Academy Award ceremony honoring this year's winners in the Sci-Tech categories still had it's share of mojo as Milla Jovovich presented Oscars to the innovators who work behind the scenes to create the technology that powers modern filmmaking.
Sound boring? Well, that's only because you haven't heard about the sweet digital capabilities of the Arrilaser Film Recorder.
Move over, Brad Pitt, because the true sexiness has just arrived.
And while receiving the only true Oscar of the night was a highlight for Arri (the other winners got plaques or certificates, kind of like at a season-ending little league banquet), the company that built the Arrilaser Film Recorder believes this is just the first step towards some even cooler digital magic.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that eight scientific and technical achievements represented by 28 individual award recipients will be honored at its annual Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation at the Beverly Wilshire on Saturday, February 11, 2012.
Unlike other Academy Awards to be presented this year, achievements receiving Scientific and Technical Awards need not have been developed and introduced during 2011.
