The fifth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is showing some steady sea legs at the box office, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales having pushed its worldwide haul to $650 million this past weekend.

The film, directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg and released in the UK as Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, has grossed a modest $150 million domestically – over $90 million less than the previous instalment On Stranger Tides, which was itself a franchise low. However, it has been performing very well on the international stage, where is has grossed a further $500 million, including $145 million from China alone.

Worldwide, Dead Men Tell No Tales is now just $4 million short of the total haul of the first instalment, The Curse of the Black Pearl, which earned $654.3 million back in 2003.

Pirates of the Caribbean won’t continue without Johnny Depp

While the franchise survived the departure of two of its original stars in Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley with 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the series will only continue for as long as Johnny Depp is willing to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

““I just don’t see it [working on Pirates without Depp],” Bruckheimer told Digital Spy during a press interview to promote the release of the new film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. “The secret to any successful franchise is picking talented people, and Johnny is absolutely key to the success of Pirates. He’s such a unique character, such an endearing character, and such an irreverent character all in one.”

Bruckheimer also seemingly ruled out a small screen spinoff of the blockbuster series, adding that: “You have a kitchen in your house, right? But you still go out to eat.

Jack Sparrow will be very different in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Johnny Depp’s character Jack Sparrow apparently won’t be quite as we remember him when he turns up in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

With the series being away for the past six years, 2017’s return to the franchise will hopefully breathe new life into a set of films that began way back in 2003.

Depp’s character has since become iconic, and for good or ill, has defined his career thereafter.

Speaking to SFX Magazine, co-director of the upcoming movie Joachim Ronning, has said that the swashbuckling adventurer that we know and love isn’t the same old Jack.

“He’s lost his luck. And luck was a big part of his lifestyle. He’s lost his way. He’s lost his horizon. He’s not on the ocean anymore when we find him. He’s a land pirate and he’s miserable. He’s alone.
