Mini Bio (1)

Rinko was born Kikuchi Yuriko in Hadano just south of Tokyo. The town is known mainly for its green tea and public baths. She is the youngest of three siblings. After being scouted on the street, a common means of getting started in Japan, she began modelling in her hometown and subsequently began acting under her birth name before switching to Rinko. She appeared in the cult film The Taste Of Tea, but came to mainstream audiences' attention for her role in Babel for which she had learnt sign language. She played a deaf-mute daughter. She was the first Japanese actress to be nominated for the Oscars in 50 years. She followed Umeki Miyoshi in this respect. Other than that she had appeared in a few commercials, including pushing Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, and Japanese serials. As a result, her popularity rose outside her native country and lagged in Japan. Her appearance on the popular talk show Waratte Iitomo! did not help given its awkwardness. She moved to New York City and moved in with Spike Jonze whom she had met in Tokyo at a film festival in 2009. She was also taking English lessons in New York, which makes her knowledge of the language suspect. The relationship ended at the end of 2011. While she did appear in the film version of Norwegian Wood, her later films for the West have been commercialized popcorn fare like 47 Ronin, which turned a tale of samurai loyalty and justice into a monster flick, and Pacific Rim, which subverted Japanese creature lore into a mecha-bot extravaganza. Her success and foray into Western screens continued with her castings in Kumiko and Westworld. Rinko married Japanese actor Sometani Shota on 31.12.2014 and gave birth to their child in October 2016. She can get on either a horse or motorcycle and grew up watching samurai films.

Personal Quotes (1)

So my concern was not the nudity itself, my concern was that the most important part of the film to describe her emotionally. So the nudity itself was not my concern (talking about Babel (2006)).
