Michael Kennedy is an award-winning, versatile director whose bold visual story-telling creates memorable movies and TV shows that achieve critical and commercial success while addressing significant social issues. He has directed 24 feature-length movies and over 230 episodes of prime-time drama and comedy, including the entire first season of the ground-breaking hit series "Little Mosque On The Prairie" that used humor to attack racism against Muslims in the post-911 world. He was a co-winner of The Canada Award (one of the Special Gemini Awards) for promoting diversity in Canadian television. He was recently nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction, TV Movie for "#Roxie", which was also nominated for Best TV Movie. In 2023 Michael was inducted as a "Visionary" onto the Image Arts Wall of Fame at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Michael is often brought in early to help develop a new TV series; he has directed the first episodes filmed and/or aired for 15 different series including: "Little Mosque...", "Pure Pwnage", "Delmer and Marta", "North South", "Mental Block", "Listen Missie", "Screech Owls", "P.R.", "Taking The Falls", "My Life and a Movie", "The Good Germany", "This Space For Rent" and "Jets". He was also one of the directors of the acclaimed comedy series "Kids In The Hall" and directed 14 episodes of the award-winning "Made In Canada" series starring Rick Mercer.
His international reputation has led Michael to direct movies in Mexico, Belize, Germany, Hungary, India, the US, and across Canada. Michael also wrote the scripts for three of the feature films he directed.
Michael has received: 2 Directors Guild of Canada Awards from 8 nominations; a nomination for a Directors Guild of America Award; winner of Best Director at the Canadian Music Video Awards; 4 Best Director Gemini/CSA nominations; and 3 wins from 11 nominations for Best Director at the Canadian Comedy Awards.
