Kaouther Ben Hania’s “Four Daughters,” winner of the L’Oeil d’Or Award for best documentary at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, has been acquired for U.S. distribution. Kino Lorber has acquired U.S. rights to “Four Daughters,” Kaouther Ben Hania’s film which competed at the Cannes Film Festival.
The competition’s sole Arab film, “Four Daughters” mixes documentary and fiction to tell the story of a Tunisian mother whose two elder daughters joined Isis. The Doha Film Institute’s Qumra talent and project incubator event returned as a 100% in-person event last week, bringing participants together face-to-face in Doha for the first time since it was forced online in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It’s been great to have everyone back gain. I keep pinching myself that it’s still happening. I could not be happier with how it has gone,” said Dfi CEO Fatma Hassan Alremaihi.
The ninth edition, running from March 10 to 15, gathered 44 Dfi grantee projects across all formats and in various stages of development and production, accompanied by their first, second and third-time directors and producers.

Maha Haj’s drama Mediterranean Fever, which world premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard this year, has been selected as Palestine’s official entry in the best international film category.
A committee consisting of Palestinian film professionals, overseen by the country’s Ministry of Culture, made their choice earlier this week.
The Haifa-set drama co-stars Amer Hiehel as Waleed, an aspiring writer suffering from chronic depression who cultivates a relationship with a petty criminal neighbor (Ashraf Fara), but with a sinister ulterior motive.
The film is Haj’s second feature after Personal Affairs, which also debuted in Un Certain Regard in 2016.
The filmmaker has explained that the character of Waleed is a reflection of her own dark side and the frustrations of Palestinians living in Israel. One-third of the population of the port city of Haifa, which has been part of Israel since 1948, is Palestinian.

These were Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness,” in Competition, Ali Abbasi’s “Holy Spider,” in Competition, Emily Atef’s “More Than Ever,” in Un Certain Regard, Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Un beau matin,” in Directors’ Fortnight, Sergei Loznitsa’s “The Natural History of Destruction,” in Special Screening, and Mantas Kvedaravicius’ “Mariupolis 2,” in Special Screening.
Commenting on the role Medienboard played in funding the films in Cannes, the organization’s chief Kirsten Niehuus said: “Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and other film funds play an important role in sustaining high quality cinema in Europe and in international co-productions around the world.”

Leading arthouse sales company The Match Factory has acquired distribution rights to murdered Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius’ documentary “Mariupolis 2,” ahead of the film’s premiere next week at the Cannes Film Festival as a Special Screening.
Kvedaravičius was captured and murdered by the Russian army in Mariupol, Ukraine in early April. The film was co-directed by Kvedaravičius’ fiancée Hanna Bilobrova, who was with him at the time of his death, and was able to bring back the footage filmed there, and edited it with his editor Dounia Sichov.
The Match Factory worked with Kvedaravičius on his debut feature “Barzakh,” which played in the Berlinale in 2011.
The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival “thanks to the immeasurable effort of his producers and collaborators who have put all their strength into continuing to share his work, his vision and his films following Mantas’ death,” The Match Factory observed.

The Cannes Film Festival has announced that the final movie from Lithuanian filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravičius will be screened during the upcoming 2022 edition. Kvedaravičius was filming an Ukraine-set documentary in the city of Mariupol when he was killed in early April amid Russia’s invasion of the country. The documentary, now titled “Mariupolis 2,” will screen on May 19 at Buñuel Theatre and on May 20 at Agnès Varda Theatre.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has picked up the U.S. rights for “The Man Who Sold His Skin,” Tunisia’s short-listed entry for the international feature film Oscar. The film is represented in international markets by Paris-based Bac Films.
“The Man Who Sold His Skin” stars Yahya Mahayni as Sam, a Syrian man who decides to have a large Schengen visa, the document he desperately needs to enter Europe, tattooed on his back by a famous artist, thus becoming a human artwork to be exhibited in a Brussels museum. Turning his own body into a prestigious piece of art, Sam will come to realize that his decision might actually mean anything but freedom.
The film world premiered at Venice, where it won the best actor award for Mahayni, and went on to have its Middle East premiere at Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival, where it scooped the best Arab film award.

Independent documentary Machines, the Sundance-winning debut of director Rahul Jain, has secured deals in North America and Europe.
Doc specialists Autlook Filmsales have sold the film to Kino Lorber (North America), Filmcoopi (Switzerland), Pek Distribution (Finland), Dogwoof (UK) and Docs (Austria). They are considering offers from Benelux, India and Germany.
Machines explores a vast textile factory in India and the human cost of globalisation, it won the world cinema documentary special jury award for excellence in cinematography at Sundance this year.
It will open the MoMa DocFortnight (Feb 16 - 26) in New York, followed by a theatrical rollout in August.
Machines is co-produced by Pallas Film (Thanassis Karathanos), Jann Pictures (Rahul Jain) and IV Films (Iikka Vehkalahti).

Twenty Twenty Vision Filmproduktion, the German producer of Rafi Pitts’ Berlinale Competition title Soy Nero [pictured], is lining up projects from Israel and Cyprus.
Twenty Twenty’s managing director Thanassis Karathanos told Screen that principal photography on Israeli filmmaker Veronica Kedar’s Family began at locations in the German city of Halle last week.
Although the film’s story is set in Israel, Family will be shot completely in Germany. It marks another collaboration for Karathanos with Mosh Danon’s Inosan Productions after working together on Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani’s 2009 film Ajami.
Kedar’s second feature had been pitched at the 2014 edition of the Berlinale Co-Production Market where Twenty Twenty’s second project, Christos Georgiou’s Happy Birthday, was also presented to potential co-producers.

As critics and audiences rave about acclaimed Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos English-language debut "The Lobster," Los Angeles gets ready to received some of the best Greek films of the past year including an unprecedented programming move that will have the 2014 and 2015 winners of the Hellenic Film Academy Best Film Award bookend the ninth annual Los Angeles Greek Film Festival.
The almost decade-old festival opens Wednesday, June 3, with Pantelis Voulgaris’ award-winning period drama “Little England.” Panos H.Koutras’ wry and emotional road trip and this year’s Hellenic Film Academy Award winner “Xenia” will conclude the Festival’s five days of screenings, red carpet events, receptions and industry panels at the Closing Night Gala on Sunday June 7, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.
This year’s Lagff welcomes a record 35 features, documentaries and short films to the program, including three World premieres, 14 U.S premieres and 10 Los Angeles premieres. Alongside Greece, countries represented in this year’s festival include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, France, Israel, Germany, Qatar, United Kingdom and the United States.
“Our program, more than ever before, is an exciting amalgamation of social, satirical and political statements from a rejuvenated Greek film industry”, states Festival topper Aristotle Katopodis. “While the economic and social crisis in Greece, and Southern European region, continues to hold Greece and the world markets in limbo, the Greek filmmakers are responding with what one could call “Through The Lens Darkly” to paraphrase the title of Philip K. Exclusive: Germany’s Pallas Film will co-produce Rajesh Jala’s The Spark (Chingari) with France’s Asap Films, which boarded the project at Film Bazaar last year.
The project has also secured a $30,000 grant from German fund Ezef. It previously won the Incredible India Award at Film Bazaar, where it took part in Screenwriters’ Lab and the Co-production Market, and was also awarded a Global Film Initiative grant of $10,000 at this year’s Cinemart.
“We are now working towards finding a good Indian producer for the project and expect to shoot in 2015,” Jala told Screen.

Film-makers across Europe are “in shock” after learning the news that the Nipkow Programm has not received backing from the EU’s Creative Europe programme for 2015-2016.
Speaking exclusively to ScreenDaily, Nipkow Programm managing director Petra Weisenburger explained that the Berlin-based training initiative had not been successful in the latest round of funding for the next two years and would explore alternative strategies for a survival plan.
In the current financial year, Creative Europe had provided nearly 46% (€180,400) of Nipkow’s overall budget, with the remaining €215,543 coming from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (Mbb) and Germany’s State Minister for Culture and the Media (Bkm).
Weisenburger said that Mbb’s CEO Kirsten Niehuus had already indicated a desire to see the Nipkow Programm continue to exist, but the situation remains unclear about the funding from Bkm for 2015 onwards.
She added that the Nipkow Programm jury of experts will meet during the next Berlinale in February to discuss the initiative’s future...

Mexican director Jorge Perez Solorzano’s Perpetual Sadness (La Tirisia) was named best film at the 55th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Oct 31 - Nov 9) winning the Golden Alexander.
It beat competition from 13 other first and second films screened in this year’s international competition section.
The film deals with the stoicism and the sadness shared by women in a remote village facing the departure of their sons in search of work. World sales are handled by Media Luna.

There were several prizes for German co-productions at the Cannes Film Festival (14 - 25 May 2014) this year: Winter Sleep (Tr/De/Fr, Bredok Film Production) won the Palm d'Or . The film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan also received the Fipresci Prize from the international film critics. Another co-production with German participation, Le Meraviglie by Alice Rohrwacher (It/Ch/De, Pola Pandora), was awarded the Grand Prix. White God by Kornél Mundruczó (Hu/De/Se, Pola Pandora) received the main award in the Un Certain Regard sidebar. Pola Pandora, the German production company serving as a partner on both films, was co-founded by the recently departed Karl Baumgartner, a pioneer of European arthouse cinema. Wim Wenders and his co-director Juliano Ribeiro Salgado received the Special Prize in the Un Certain Regard sidebar for the French production The Salt of the Earth. Juan Sarmiento G. was responsible for the camerawork on Leidi, the Golden Palm for Short Films. He is now living and working in Berlin after having studied at the Hff Potsdam-Babelsberg.
The cinema was filled to capacity at the world premiere of the Next Generation Short Tiger 2014 program of shorts on Sunday, 18 May 2014. Around 250 guests came to the Star Cinema where the directors and producers of the 14 selected shorts presented their works to an audience of international professionals. The director and Oscar-winner® Caroline Link, who was a member of the jury, was also present at the premiere in Cannes. Next Generation Short Tiger 2014 is organized by German Films and the German Federal Film Board (Ffa). After the screening, the audience – which included representatives of international festivals, journalists, producers and buyers, rewarded the achievements of the German short film talents with long and enthusiastic applause.
Mariette Rissenbeek, managing director of German Films: "We are delighted that this year again saw such a large interest from people wanting to get to know the up-and-coming generation of German filmmakers at the Next Generation Short Tiger premiere. Everything was represented – from the Western through drama, animation, thriller, documentary and also comedy – and all of this was of a very high quality." The first festival invitations had already started coming in after the screening in Cannes. International co-production and co-production markets around the globe will not be the same now following the news that the internationally respected German producer-distributor Karl Baumgartner has died at the age of 65.
Known affectionately by friends and colleagues alike as ¨Baumi¨, Baumgartner hailed from the South Tyrol, but was ¨ at home¨ in different countries and cultures, working with film-makers on projects located in some of the seemingly most inaccessible or logistically nightmarish parts of the planet.
Hearing him recount the making of Bakhtiar Khudojnazarov’s Luna Papa at one of the countless co-production panels with his tales of the shooting being stopped by floods washing the set away, the outbreak of civil war and being evacuated by the Red Cross floods, one often wondered whether he purposely looked for such challenges.
Not to speak of the challenge of putting such delicate and time-consuming co-production structures together involving tried-and-tested production partners, public funders and broadcasters from across Europe and beyond...

In more Berlinale news, two new episodes of House of Cards to be shown on festival closing day.
The award will be presented to Baumgartner after laudatory speeches by Berlinale festival director Dieter Kosslick and Aki Kaurismäki on Feb 8 before a screening of Kaurismäki’s 1991 film La Vie de Bohème.
In 1982, Baumgartner and Reinhard Brundig founded the distrubution company Pandora Filmverleih in Frankfurt, which became one of the leading players in the world of interational arthouse cinema, discovering such talents as Jim Jarmusch, Aki Kaurimäki, Sally Potter, Andrei Tarkovsky and Kim Ki Duk.

New films by Rafi Pitts [pictured], Alexander Sokurov, Benoit Jacquot and Volker Schlöndorff are among 12 projects backed by the German-French “Mini-Traité” Co-production Fund in 2013 with a total of over €3m.

Dutch production company Lemming Film, which co-produced Amat Escalante’s Cannes entry Heli, is working alongside Indonesian filmmaker Edwin and his production company Babibutafilm on new film Exotic Pictures (working title)
According to the producers, the feature will “explore the long and suppressed history between the Dutch and the Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal”.
Lorna Tee, who co-produced Edwin’s most recent feature Postcards from the Zoo, is also a producer of the project. With “Postcards” in 2012, Edwin became the first Indonesian filmmaker in competition at the Berlinale.

Once again the European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Film Sales Support (Fss) initiative will come to Toronto to link sales companies from all over Europe to a great array of buyers from across the globe. Supported by the Media Programme of the European Union, Fss has now been aiding the European film industry fro the last 10 years.
"Toronto has and is an important informal market and an important festival for European films, the distributors see the films in a different mood, more quietly, the public screenings are working well. It is a key place to launch a film or to complete previous sales on films that were in Cannes, Venice, Locarno...” (Loïc Magneron, Wide)
“Tiff is a major pillar of the annual festival calendar. Aside from a proliferation of North American buyers, it also attracts top tier international distributors so a favorable reception at Tiff can significantly increase a film's commercial prospects”. (Andrew Orr, Independent)
Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

Berlinale Residency, Berlin International Film Festival’s new international fellowship programme, is inviting six filmmakers with their latest projects to Berlin for four months, beginning in September 2012.
The selected participants can finalize their scripts, and develop production and distribution strategies at the Residency. Mentors will advise participants on developing and revising their scripts. In a “Script to Market” seminar with market experts, the producers and directors will explore the audience potential of their works.
The selected projects will be presented at the Berlinale Co-Production Market (February 10-12, 2013) and/or at the Guadalajara Ibero-American Co-production Meeting in March 2013.

The European Film Academy have nominated five films for the Discovery Award - which recognises a director’s first full length feature film. Previous winners include Bruno Dumot's La vie de Jésus (1997), Laurent Cantet's Human Resources (2000), Andrey Zvyagintsev's The Return (2003) and last year the award went to the very deserving Steve McQueen's Hunger. - The European Film Academy have nominated five films for the Discovery Award - which recognises a director’s first full length feature film. Founded in 1988, the European Film Academy currently unites 1,850 European film professionals with the common aim of promoting Europe’s film culture. Their annual awards will be December 8 in Copenhagen.
