The Quad Salutes Lois Smith by Screening Her Career Highlights

Smith in “Marjorie Prime

Just days ago Lois Smith received this year’s Golden Key Award for Career Achievement at the Key West Film Festival. Now comes word that the industry vet will be honored at New York City’s Quad Cinema. Four of her career highlights will be screened: “East of Eden,” “Five Easy Pieces,” “Foxes,” and “Marjorie Prime.” Released earlier this year, the latter sees Smith playing a former violinist in the middle stages of dementia. She maintains a close relationship with her late husband who exists in the form of a holographic projection (Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”). Smith received excellent reviews for the sci-fi flick.

“Enjoying her seventh decade onscreen, actress par excellence Lois Smith was recently on view at the Quad recreating her stage triumph with her beautiful multifaceted performance in ‘Marjorie Prime’ — and now she’s back in theaters with ‘Lady Bird,’” an announcement from The Quad reads.

Blu-ray Review – The Initiation (1984)

The Initiation, 1984.

Directed by Larry Stewart.

Starring Daphne Zuniga, Clu Gulager, Vera Miles, James Read, Marilyn Kagan.

Synopsis:

When a college prank goes wrong a group of teenage girls find themselves at the mercy of a killer.

Originally released during the dying breaths of the first run of slasher films, The Initiation is a film that ticks all the boxes as far as slashers go but doesn’t do enough to raise the bar in any way, and seeing as this came out a month after Wes Craven’s groundbreaking A Nightmare on Elm Street changed the horror landscape forever it does look a little old hat when put up against that film and the Friday the 13th sequels that were proving popular at the time.

Kelly Fairchild (Daphne ZunigaThe Fly II) is a teenage student who suffers from bad dreams about a man on fire attacking her parents.

The elegant re-issue seems aimed at convincing film snobs that this little gem from the last days of disco finally deserves their attention after a distance of 35 years, during which time it was either dismissed as another insignificant teen comedy of the ‘80s, or as a guilty pleasure. But longtime champions of the film, myself included, need no convincing. We owned the clamshell VHS, we owned the first-generation DVD, and now, if anything, I’d venture to say we feel vindicated that it now carries the stamp as a bonafide classic by a home video label as respected as Kino Lorber. Indeed, a major fist-pump moment comes during director Adrian Lyne’s remark in the audio commentary that Roger Ebert selected it as his favorite film of 1980 and took it with

‘The Initiation’ Review [Arrowdrome]

Stars: Vera Miles, Clu Gulager, Daphne Zuniga, James Read, Marilyn Kagan, Hunter Tylo, Robert Dowdell, Frances Peterson, Christopher Bradley, Peter Malof | Written by Charles Pratt Jr. | Directed by Larry Stewart

Like any blossoming all-American gal, Kelly is looking forward to her sorority initiation with a mixture of excitement and apprehension – and she s got every reason to be anxious considering the prank her sorority sisters have tasked her with a late-night break-in of her fathers department store. At first, it seems pretty straightforward and everything goes to plan, but once inside the mall, Kelly and her fellow pledges finds themselves locked in, and they re not alone…

Making its second appearance on DVD here in the UK (the first was an “only just better than VHS” release by Pegasus), The Initiation is one of my personal favourites from the Eighties slasher boom. Taking its lead from those slasher movies that came before it,
