Box-Office Weekend: Deadpool 2 Dominates

Deadpool 2 delivered an impressive, though not record-setting, opening weekend of $125 million. Which ultimately makes it the second-largest R-rated opening just behind the original film’s $132.4 million opening in 2016. Internationally, the film brought in an estimated $176.3 million, giving it a worldwide debut of over $300 million.

Disney and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War finished in a distant second place with $28.7 million. Still, that was good enough to push the film’s four-week domestic total to $595 million. The film also amassed another $84.4 million internationally to up its global total to $1.81 billion, making it the fourth largest global release of all time, behind just Avatar (2009) and Titanic (1997).

Book Club, starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen brought in $12.5 million its opening weekend in a shrewd example of counterprogramming. Melissa McCarthy’s Life of the Party finished in fourth place with $7.7 million falling dramatically from its $18.5 million showing in second place last week.

Fast and Furious Hobbs and Shaw Spin-Off Will Be More Grounded
With Deadpool 2 hitting theaters starting today, director David Leitch will likely now start focusing on his highly-anticipated Fast & Furious spin-off featuring Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Universal has set a July 26, 2019 release date, with filming slated to begin this fall, and while doing press for Deadpool 2, David Leitch revealed that his spin-off will be more grounded than the Fast & Furious franchise it was spawned from. Here's what Leitch had to say below.

"I think it's going to be a little bit more grounded because it's the beginning. It's an origin story, in a sense. It's not an origin story, but we're starting a franchise. So we want it to be a little bit more grounded, a little bit more character-centric. We're going to set up the stakes for these guys and their relationship, but we're also going to have some great set

‘Deadpool 2’ Director David Leitch on Overcoming Sequelitis, Franchise’s Future
David Leitch admitted he was reluctant to step into the director’s chair for “Deadpool 2” after Tim Miller’s 2016 original became a global phenomenon.

“I never really thought I would want to do a sequel because I like to create worlds,” he told TheWrap, noting that Ryan Reynolds’ R-rated superhero film breaking various records and capturing the hearts of fans all over the world.

But the star himself persuaded the “Atomic Blonde” director to come on board. “Ryan told me it would be most fun film to work on. That was a lie,” Leitch said, before he started laughing. “Just kidding — it was great!”

‘Breaking In’ Signals the Rise of Gabrielle Union as a Box Office Star

‘Breaking In’ Signals the Rise of Gabrielle Union as a Box Office Star
While “Avengers: Infinity War” left box office beancounters’ jaws on the floor with its huge Chinese launch last weekend, Gabrielle Union was quietly making her first steps on her path to becoming the next big box office star with her latest film, “Breaking In.”

Made on a thrifty $6 million budget, “Breaking In” stars Union as a mother forced to break out the shotguns after thieves invade her late father’s mansion and hold her children hostage in an attempt to access the house’s vault.

Though critics panned it, the film made $17.5 million from 2,537 screens this past weekend. By comparison, this past weekend’s other new release, Melissa McCarthy’s “Life of the Party,” needed over 1,100 more screens to open to $17.8 million, giving “Breaking In” the higher per screen average at just under $7,000 per screen.

A Suitably Epic Image For Giant Shark Thriller The Meg Surfaces

It’s been described as this year’s guilty pleasure, and possibly the ultimate popcorn movie, so it’s with great excitement that we bring you a suitably epic new action shot from The Meg, Jon Turteltaub’s giant shark thriller that feels like the unholy offspring of Jaws and Deep Blue Sea. On steroids.

Coming to us by way of Empire Magazine, this is a dark and brooding close-up of what is likely one of The Meg‘s big action sequences, in which one deep sea diver comes face-to-face with a deep sea monster the likes of which we’ve never seen before.

So whereas your typical great white shark grows to around 15 feet from tip to tail, the prehistoric megalodon reached a whopping 59 feet, meaning The Stath is about to get up close and personal with a true, underwater behemoth. Not that he would have it any other way,
