After a few years as a performance artist, she made short films while
attending the NYU Graduate Film Program, which she completed in 1993.
She was then able to develop her autobiographical script to Slums of Beverly Hills (1998)
while at the Sundance Institute.
[Asked about why she cast dramatic actors in her comedy "Slums of
Beverly Hills"] "The characters in this film are not walking around
saying, 'Hey, we're in a comedy so we have to act like we're in a
comedy.' Too many movies, actors seem to be doing that."
