“We’re feeling good about our diversity,” said CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl, who spoke with reporters Wednesday along with top CBS programming exec Thom Sherman at a breakfast where they revealed the network’s fall schedule.
After the two execs were elevated to their current positions last year, they faced a barrage of questions about diversity and inclusion at the Television Critic Association summer press tour.
On Wednesday, CBS execs admitted that the choice to make James’ character a widower didn’t go over well with viewers. “Creatively, the show made a choice at the beginning of last year,” said CBS Entertainment senior executive vice president Thom Sherman. “We agreed to go along with it and unfortunately the audience didn’t respond to it.”
CBS first revealed the storyline last summer during the Television Critics Association press tour, after the choice was made to bring James’ “The King of Queens” co-star, Leah Remini, on “Kevin Can Wait” full time.
As part of a massive shift when “Kevin Can Wait” returned for its sophomore run,
Kevin Can Wait: CBS Comedy Cancelled After Two Seasons
Kevin Can Wait, the biggest ratings success at the beginning of the 2016-17 television season has become a casualty at the end of the 2017-18 season.
How did it happen?
Kevin Can Wait Season 1 started out as a family sitcom with Kevin married and recently retired from the police force.
Co-Starring Erinn Hayes as Kevin's wife, the show focuses on Kevin's shenanigans as a husband trying to get away with doing as little as possible in the wake of his retirement and his wife giving him the leeway to do it.

The kids weren't the best in the biz, but the lead couple had an easy banter that led to some great moments throughout the season.
Still, the ratings declined and in an effort to grasp the brass ring,
The CBS sitcom stars Kevin James, Leah Remini, Taylor Spreitler, Mary-Charles Jones, James Digiacomo, Ryan Cartwright, Lenny Venito, Gary Valentine, and Leonard Earl Howze. James, Rock Reuben, Rob Long, Jeff Sussman, Andy Fickman, Tony Sheehan, and Steve Mosko are executive producers for Sony Pictures TV and CBS Television Studios.
“Kevin Can Wait” underwent a creative overhaul between seasons one and two, with original co-star Erinn Hayes’ character written off the show and Remini joining the cast, reuniting James with his former “King of Queens” co-star.
CBS has cancelled Kevin Can Wait after two seasons, TVLine has confirmed.
As well publicized, Kevin underwent a major overhaul in Season 2. Original cast member Erinn Hayes was let go and essentially replaced by Kevin James’ former King of Queens costar Leah Remini, who plays Kevin’s former police partner Vanessa Cellucci. Together, the two started a private security firm, with much of Season 2 doing everything it could to avoid making them a couple focused on their fledgling business.
Kevin Can Wait this season averaged a 1.2 demo rating along with
Also returning for another round is “Celebrity Big Brother.”
There was no official word from CBS about the fate of a handful of other bubble series, including comedies including Kevin James starrer “Kevin Can Wait,” “Superior Donuts,” “9Jkl,” and “Living Biblically.” Drama “Scorpion” has been shuttered after four seasons.
Monday comedy “Kevin Can Wait,” from Sony Pictures TV, has seen a ratings drop in its second season. Sony would likely shop the series if CBS drops it because

“[The doctor] was like, you’ve had a massive heart attack, and I was like, ‘nobody told me, are you serious,'” he said. “And he was like, ‘are you high?’ And I was like, ‘yeah, I got blazed before my show!'”
Smith tweeted back in February from his hospital bed that he had 100 percent blockage in his Lad artery, or the “widow-maker.” He told “Today” that his worst fears were dying and having someone see him naked, both of which go up when you’re in the hospital. He was even kept awake on the operating table, and he said the doctor later described him as “very chatty,” even lightening the mood by singing the theme song from “Degrassi.”
But Smith has since lost 32 pounds of a prescribed 50 since his health scare, and he’s now on a “plant-based” diet to go along with his pot smoking.

Smith’s show from the night of his heart attack will be made into a stand-up special on Showtime called “Kevin Smith: Silent But Deadly” airing on May 11.
