CBS Chief Reveals Reason Why 'Kevin Can Wait' Was Canceled After Just Two Seasons

It seems Kevin Can't Wait. The CBS sitcom starring Kevin James was recently canceled by the network after just two seasons — and now fans of the series want to know exactly why. "The numbers," Kelly Kahl, the CBS Entertainment president, told Deadline in a new interview. "It was a strong show for us, it’s had a lot of decline this year, it was heading in the wrong direction. The numbers were going down as the year went on and looking forward, it didn’t look like a show that was going to be strong enough to anchor a night for us going forward." Kevin Can Wait made headlines after Season 1 when it fired Erinn Hayes, who played Kevin's wife, Donna Gable, on the series. As part of the plot, Donna died, leaving behind her husband and three children. However, the series never really explained how, which left many fans

CBS Programming Bosses ‘Feeling Good About Our Diversity’ With Fall Schedule

CBS’ fall 2018 schedule includes seven original scripted series with people of color in leading roles. The number represents a significant uptick for a lineup that has for years been criticized for a dearth of onscreen inclusion.

“We’re feeling good about our diversity,” said CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl, who spoke with reporters Wednesday along with top CBS programming exec Thom Sherman at a breakfast where they revealed the network’s fall schedule.

After the two execs were elevated to their current positions last year, they faced a barrage of questions about diversity and inclusion at the Television Critic Association summer press tour.

‘Kevin Can Wait’: CBS Admits That Viewers Were Not Happy With Erinn Hayes’ Character’s Death

‘Kevin Can Wait’: CBS Admits That Viewers Were Not Happy With Erinn Hayes’ Character’s Death
A year ago, Kevin James told a reporter that his CBS sitcom, “Kevin Can Wait,” had killed off Erinn Hayes’ character on the show in order to give the show a longer life. Last week, CBS canceled the sitcom after two seasons.

On Wednesday, CBS execs admitted that the choice to make James’ character a widower didn’t go over well with viewers. “Creatively, the show made a choice at the beginning of last year,” said CBS Entertainment senior executive vice president Thom Sherman. “We agreed to go along with it and unfortunately the audience didn’t respond to it.”

CBS first revealed the storyline last summer during the Television Critics Association press tour, after the choice was made to bring James’ “The King of Queens” co-star, Leah Remini, on “Kevin Can Wait” full time.

As part of a massive shift when “Kevin Can Wait” returned for its sophomore run,

‘Wake-and-Baker’ Kevin Smith Says He’s Lost 32 Pounds Since His Heart Attack
Kevin Smith is feeling great and looking good since suffering a heart attack last February, so much so that he put on his best baseball cap, hockey jersey and got baked for his first on-camera interview since then with “Today” on Monday morning.

“I’m a wake-and-baker, so I’m feeling fantastic,” Smith told Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin. “I’ve been up since 5 a.m, I’m ready to embrace the day.”

In fact, the “Clerks” director explained that he was even stoned when he went into the hospital and learned he had suffered a heart attack.

“[The doctor] was like, you’ve had a massive heart attack, and I was like, ‘nobody told me, are you serious,'” he said. “And he was like, ‘are you high?’ And I was like, ‘yeah, I got blazed before my show!'”

Smith tweeted back in February from his hospital bed that he had 100 percent blockage in his Lad artery, or the “widow-maker.” He told “Today” that his worst fears were dying and having someone see him naked, both of which go up when you’re in the hospital. He was even kept awake on the operating table, and he said the doctor later described him as “very chatty,” even lightening the mood by singing the theme song from “Degrassi.”

But Smith has since lost 32 pounds of a prescribed 50 since his health scare, and he’s now on a “plant-based” diet to go along with his pot smoking.

“This is the weight I was when I met my wife, so this is a good weight to be at. Last time I was at this weight, I scored, big time,” he joked. “I joined Weight Watchers, and they made me an ambassador. It’s me, Oprah and DJ Khaled. I’m in pretty good company.”

Smith’s show from the night of his heart attack will be made into a stand-up special on Showtime called “Kevin Smith: Silent But Deadly” airing on May 11.
