Geraldine James, Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) was born on July 6, 1950 in Maidenhead, Berkshire. She was educated at Downe House, a girls' independent school in Newbury, Berkshire, and later, at Drama Centre London. Geraldine has made several film and television appearances, she was nominated four times a BAFTA TV Award for her performances in Dummy (1979), The Jewel in the Crown (1984), Band of Gold (1995), and The Sins (2000).

She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Drama.
She was nominated for Broadway's 1990 Tony Award as Best Actress (Play) for portraying Portia in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice".
She has one daughter, Ellie (born 1985).

Despite having a striking resemblance to Vanessa Redgrave, they are not related. Although Geraldine appeared in The Fever (2004) alongside Redgrave and her daughter Joely Richardson, and also played the cousin of Joely Richardson's character in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011).
Her niece Zoe Buckman is married to David Schwimmer.
Geraldine James is left-handed, as are her Made in Dagenham (2010) co-stars Jaime Winstone and Andrea Riseborough.
