Sundance Film Festival 2016 Premiere and Spotlight Movie Lineup and Special Events

Sundance 2016 is fast approaching. Last week we posted the movie lineup of Midnight and Competition film selections. We now have the complete lineup for the premieres in both the feature film and documentary categories. We also have their selections for the Spotlight and Kid films. I've also included a list of special events.

There are a lot of great films on this list that I'm excited about seeing because of the incredible talent involved. Viggo Mortensen and Frank Langella star in Captain Fantastic; Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams star in Certain Women; Rachel Weisz, Michael Shannon, Kathy Bates and Danny Glover star in Complete Unknown; Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez star in The Fundamentals of Caring; John Krasinski directed a film called The Hollars which he stars in with Anna Kendrick, Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, and Charlie Day; Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has made a new

The Premieres line-up introduces Indignation, the feature directorial debut from former Focus Features CEO and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon screenwriter James Schamus, and the latest world premieres from John Carney, Kenneth Lonergan, Ira Sachs and Diego Luna.

The Documentary Premieres section encompass latest films from Werner Herzog, Spike Lee, Liz Garbus and Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.

‘McFarland USA’ To Close Santa Barbara Film Festival: Full Lineup
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has unveiled its 2015 line-up which includes films representing 54 countries, 23 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres. The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.

The festival runs from January 27-February 7.

'McFarland, USA' will close out 30th annual Santa Barbara Film Festival
A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. Fortissimo adds Lucia, Ghadi for Efm
Exclusive: Pre-sales to commence on Dutch film Lucia De B. and Ghadi from Lebanon in Berlin next week.

Fortissimo Films has revealed two additions to its Berlin slate: Lucia De B. (working title) from The Netherlands and Ghadi from Lebanon.

Both films are in post-production and slated for festival launches later in the year.

Fortissimo will handle worldwide sales outside the respective countries of origin and will introduce the films to buyers by showing exclusive footage at the European Film Market (Efm), which starts next week.

Lucia De B., produced by Rinkel Film, is the latest from Dutch director Paula Van der Oest, who was Oscar-nominated for Zus & Zo. Zus & Zo).

The film is a thriller based on one of the Netherlands most controversial court cases. Veteran nurse Lucia de B. was sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly having killed seven patients under her care at various hospitals. 'Oz' star Lee Tergesen joins ABC's 'Penoza' pilot
Lee Tergesen has joined ABC drama pilot Penoza. The project - based on a Dutch series - will focus on the widow of an assassinated crook who adopts her late husband's criminal ways. Tergesen has been cast as a character named Steven, according to TVLine. In the original show, created by Pieter Bart Korthuis, Steven (Marcel Hensema) is a foot soldier for drug runner Irwan (Fedja van Huet).
