Echo 3 is a fast-paced action thriller series with a talented cast, released on Apple TV Plus on November 23, 2022 – but is it worth watching? Set in Colombia, Echo 3 chronicles a black ops mission to rescue a research scientist who has been kidnapped by militants. Echo 3 is based on Omri Givon’s award-winning Israeli series When Heroes Fly, itself adapted from the novel of the same name by Amir Gutfreund. Jessica Ann Collins stars as the abducted scientist alongside Michiel Huisman as her husband and Luke Evans as her brother, who both lead the rescue team.
Among its appealing attributes, Echo 3 was created by Oscar-winning screenwriter Mark Boal, who also directed three episodes including the finale. After starting his career as a journalist, Boal broke into Hollywood with his collaborations with director Kathryn Bigelow. Sofia Boutella as Kora and Michiel Huisman as Gunnar in ‘Rebel Moon’ (Photo Cr. Chris Strother/Netflix © 2023)
Netflix’s first batch of official photos from Zack Snyder’s science fiction epic Rebel Moon shows off the film’s key players. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa 1954 film Seven Samurai, Rebel Moon takes place in a distant part of the galaxy and follows Kora, a mysterious woman (played by Sofia Boutella) who’s tasked with saving a peaceful colony from being wiped out by an invading force.
The cast of the two-part epic includes Ed Skrein as Admiral Atticus Noble, a nefarious Imperium enforcer; Charlie Hunnam as Kai, a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; and Djimon Hounsou as General Titus, a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium.

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder recently explained why his upcoming sci-fi film is getting an alternative, R-rated cut on Netflix.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Snyder confirmed that Rebel Moon will initially be released as a PG-13 film "that anyone can enjoy and watch." He followed that up by stating that a more explicit, harder-edged cut strictly for adults will become available to stream at a later date on Netflix. "I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them," he added. Rebel Moon receiving an R-rated cut was first teased back in March 2023 by Andy Koyama, a recording mixer on the fantasy adventure film.

Zack Snyder‘s sci-fi movie Rebel Moon will be premiering exclusively on Netflix on December 22, the first film in an epic saga that’s set to span at least two features.
Vanity Fair ran an extensive preview piece on Rebel Moon this morning, loaded with first-look images (seen above and below) as well as fresh insights from Snyder himself.
Snyder explains to the site that the second part of the Rebel Moon saga won’t be far behind December’s Part 1, and he also teases two different cuts of the two movies: one that “anyone can enjoy and watch,” plus a more adult version for those “ready to take a deeper, harder dive.”
Deborah Snyder tells the site, meanwhile, “[Rebel Moon] has a bit of Star Wars. It has a bit of everything. It’s a little bit like Lord of the Rings, a little bit Game of Thrones with the palace intrigue.

Zack Snyder’s Netflix space opera, Rebel Moon, is almost upon us. Now, we have a better look at the upcoming project.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, who also shared the new images of the film, director Zack Snyder seemed delighted to bring this new project to the world. The outlet describes this as project 30 years in the making and will follow a team of outcasts from disparate planets who join forces to rise to defend one small and vulnerable world.
Snyder also offered up some new clues about the film’s aesthetic. “It’s more of a dieselpunk world than a steampunk world,” the director says. “The technology hasn’t really changed in quite a while.”
We also got official confirmation that Rebel Moon will be broken into two parts. Producer Deborah Snyder says Zack Snyder split the movies into two after Netflix’s Scott Stuber asked him to make it less than 2 hours.

Filmmaker Zack Snyder has affirmed online speculation surrounding his forthcoming Netflix space opera Rebel Moon, confirming that it will be split into two films, with multiple cuts to be released of each installment.
Snyder’s comments came as part of an interview with Vanity Fair, also featuring his producing partner and wife, Deborah Snyder. In it, Deborah explains that the decision to expand Rebel Moon into a two-parter emerged from a dialogue with higher-ups at Netflix, including Film chairman Scott Stuber. “Originally, the script was one movie, but it was in ‘Zack form,'” she says. “It was 172 pages.”
In coming to understand that the film would come in at around a three-hour runtime, she explains, “Stuber was like, ‘On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason,’ even though you’ll binge-watch a series of eight episodes.

Zack Snyder revealed at the start of 2023 that his Netflix space epic “Rebel Moon” would be split into two movies. But Snyder is actually making four movies, sort of. In a Vanity Fair first look at “Rebel Moon,” Snyder announced that each “Rebel Moon” movie is getting two separate cuts. One cut is a movie that “anyone can enjoy and watch,” and one cut will be more explicit and strictly for adults.
“I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them,” Snyder said of the harder cuts.
“Rebel Moon” was written as one movie, but Netflix became hesitant after Snyder delivered a 172-page draft. At that length, “Rebel Moon” would’ve clocked around three hours.

Would you call Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a “hardcore deconstructivist” superhero movie?
According to Zack Snyder he believes his alternative take on the comic book film is why viewers didn’t connect with his 2016 film. In a recent Q&a, the filmmaker got candid when discussing the reception to his insanely polarizing cult classic Batman v Superman.
Snyder tells the audience of Snyder’s Full Circle charity event, “I think, and maybe I’m wrong. But I feel like a lot of people went into the movies for going like, ‘Oh, it’s the superhero romp, right? Let’s have fun with it.”
He adds, “And we gave them this sort of hardcore deconstructivist, heavily layered, experiential modern mythological superhero movie that needs… that you really need to pay attention to.

Actor Michiel Huisman took over the role of Daario Naharis from Ed Skrein in Game of Thrones season 4 — but what was the real reason behind the recast? The character of Daario Naharis debuted in the Game of Thrones season 3 episode "Second Sons," and grew into a more substantial role during season 4. Ed Skrein portrayed the Game of Thrones character for three episodes until the momentous season 3 finale. The Daario Naharis actor change from Skrein to Michiel Huisman happened in Game of Thrones season 4, and it resulted in audience confusion. Unlike the time-jump actor changes in House of the Dragon, there were no in-universe reasons for the Daario Naharis recast when Game of Throne season 4 aired in 2014.
Surprisingly, Daario Naharis wasn't the only character Game of Thrones recast for season 4, as Tommen Baratheon and The Mountain also saw actor switches at this time — though those instances weren't as jarring as Michiel Huisman's entrance into the series.

To say that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice forever changed DC movies and Zack Snyder’s career is an understatement. After the polarizing superhero film was released in 2016, the then-heads of DC Films were in an uproar and wanted to change everything about Snyder’s planned universe.
Many critics and fans pointed out that Batman v. Superman lacked humor, jokes, or anything comparable to what Marvel released then. We also saw the MCU movie films around to put a similar film in competition with the Snyder film. All of this made a perfect storm to see Snyder’s vision changed by the studio, affecting every movie released after.
What got hit the hardest was Snyder’s Justice League move. Before it was hit with one of the most controversial sets of reshoots ever, the film’s entire tone and style changed in the script’s origins. In a new...

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows on HBO. With an eight-season run, it provided many fans with the ups, downs, and bloody battles that come with political upheaval in the fantasy world created by writer George R.R. Martin.
While there were several cast changes over the years, one of the show’s more noticeable changes was that of the character Daario Naharis. While originally played by actor Ed Skrein in season three, Daario was played by Michiel Huisman after that. What was the reason for this particular cast change? Skrein says the answer is complicated.

Rebel Moon co-writer Shay Hatten teases that, from what he's seen in the trailer, Zack Snyder's upcoming space opera is quite the sight to behold. After wrapping up his work in the Dcu with Zack Snyder's Justice League, Snyder partnered with Netflix for Army of the Dead and his upcoming film, Rebel Moon. Snyder has previously shared behind-the-scenes images from the anticipated space epic and brief snippets of the film were shown off as part of Netflix's 2022 movie preview trailer.

The real twist of 2015's The Invitation ending is far more unnerving and complicated than expected. For the majority of its runtime, The Invitation presents as an isolated event in which a group of friends has been lured by a grieving mother and her new partner so that they can be ritualistically murdered. As the night progresses and the house guests are whittled down in a series of attacks, the tension seemingly revolves around the survivors' attempts to escape the house in which they have become trapped. All the guests need to do is find a way out, and then they will be safe — or so they think.
As written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, the majority of the tension in The Invitation comes in two waves: first, the initial misunderstanding, then the guests' desperation to avoid their fate. It's a complex and layered movie, and the ending of...

Once upon a time, Zack Snyder had a vision for the DC Universe, but it was not to be. After Snyder stepped down as the director of Justice League, Warner Bros. brought Joss Whedon on board to rewrite and reshot a large portion of the movie. Zack Snyder eventually brought his version of Justice League to life on HBO Max, but once James Gunn and Peter Safran signed on to run the new DC Universe, it was clear that the SnyderVerse had officially come to an end.

It's a race against time — and plenty of governmental red tape — to save a loved one in Echo 3. The series revolves around two decorated military special operatives, brothers-in-law Prince and Bambi, who are stopping at nothing to rescue Amber from the grips of a drug cartel down in Colombia, even as dark secrets about the three of them come to the surface.
Luke Evans, Michiel Huisman, and Jessica Ann Collins lead the ensemble cast of Echo 3 alongside Elizabeth Anweis, James Udom, Maria Del Rosario, Bradley Whitford, and Martina Gusmán. Created by two-time Oscar winner Mark Boal, the series is a gripping exploration of why men go to war, the effects it has on their psyches and personal relationships, and how love isn't always as strong as it should be.

Before filming on Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic Rebel Moon had even wrapped, the Netflix streaming service had already secured a tax credit for the follow-up Rebel Moon: Part 2. It was recently announced that the first installment in this two-film epic will be released on December 22nd – and during a recent interview with Variety, a Netflix executive discussed having the confidence to let Snyder dive into making Rebel Moon: Part 2 long before anyone has a chance to see the first movie.
Ori Marmur, who runs Netflix’s original studio film group with Kira Goldberg, said that Netflix believes in Rebel Moon because “Zack came in with so much passion. This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on Army of the Dead and we...

Netflix has set a date for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. The space epic will bow Dec. 22 on the streaming service, Netflix revealed Wednesday as part of a broader look at its 2023 slate.
Snyder originally developed Rebel Moon as a potential Star Wars feature more than a decade ago, before Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2021. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
Snyder started at Netflix with the zombie feature Army of the Dead, released in 2021, and is building out a universe based on that concept in addition to the world of Rebel Moon.

In an eight-season-long show with several recurring faces spending literal years between appearances, it’s not surprising that many Game of Thrones characters were recast throughout the series. Game of Thrones featured an incredible and ever-changing ensemble cast. With such a large variety of characters and storylines during times of wars and violence, it wasn’t uncommon for actors to sign onto the series and expect their characters to die fairly quickly. For example, Game of Thrones was largely promoted with the image of actor Sean Bean for season 1, and his character Ned Stark was surprisingly killed off after only 9 episodes. Quickly showing that nobody is safe in the series, very few characters survived from the first episode through Game of Thrones’ divisive finale, with four of the six Stark siblings and Tyrion Lannister being the key exceptions. However, that doesn't explain all the Game of Thrones recasts.

Mark Boal has focused much of his energy as a screenwriter on interpreting the geopolitical dramas of our times in the Middle East and Central Asia. For his new Apple TV+ series “Echo 3,” the two-time Oscar winner who wrote and produced 2008’s “The Hurt Locker” and 2011’s “Zero Dark Thirty” has turned his gaze to the United States’ neighbors to the south.
The drama series, adapted from the 2018 Israeli series “When Heroes Fly,” revolves around a kidnapping of an American research scientist (played by Jessica Ann Collins) near the Colombia-Venezuela border and the rescue effort that ensues, led by her brother (Luke Evans) and new husband (Michiel Huisman) — both of whom work for a U.S. Army elite combat unit, aka special forces. “Echo 3” bowed Nov. 23 with three episodes, followed by weekly installments premiering on Fridays through the Season 1 finale on Jan. 13.

The desperate mission to save Amber (Jessica Ann Collins) continues on Echo 3 Season 1 Episode 6, airing Friday, December 16, on Apple TV+.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at the pivotal episode, which shows Prince (Michiel Huisman) and Bambi (Luke Evans) plotting their next move.
Unfortunately, they know the net is closing, and their window to save Amber is closing.
They turn their attention to the sibling of someone associated with the people holding Amber captive, forcing them to question how far they will go to save her.
Bambi looks shocked as he hears Prince's thoughts on going after an innocent person if it means they return home with her.
Echo 3 has featured high-octane action since its premiere last month, and thankfully, that doesn't seem to be slowing down in the near future.

In Apple TV+’s “Echo 3,” created by Oscar-winner Mark Boal, Michiel Huisman — of “The Flight Attendant,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Game of Thrones” and much more — plays Prince, an elite soldier whose wife, Amber (Jessica Ann Collins), has been kidnapped in Colombia. With her brother, Bambi (Luke Evans), a fellow Special Forces member and Prince’s estranged best friend, he goes on a mission to free her without, he hopes, causing an international incident.
How did the role of Prince come to you?
For a while after “The Flight Attendant,” we were looking for a project that would feel like another step up. This character is very different from anything I’d ever played before. And it would really allow me to flex my acting muscles, so to speak. So I had to fight a bit to land the role.
Why did you have to fight?
Oh my God!

From the mind behind The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty comes the Apple TV+ series Echo 3. Based on the Israeli drama series and novel When Heroes Fly, the thriller revolves around two Special Forces operatives who race against time to save Amber, Prince's wife and Bambi's sister, from a group of rebels along the Columbia-Venezuela border.

Much like Mark Boal's Oscar-winning work before it, the Apple TV+ series balances complicated and flawed characters with nail-biting action set pieces.

If the apparent success of Amazon’s The Terminal List proved anything, it’s that there’s an audience out there for fast-moving militaristic revenge stories with more interest in a steadily escalating body count than anything deeper.
Mark Boal’s new Apple TV+ drama Echo 3 will put to the test whether viewers are willing to stick with their militaristic revenge stories if they come packaged with some nuance and characterization. Based on the Israeli format When Heroes Fly, Echo 3 has all the fetishistic shots of weapons and arbitrarily featured American flags one could ever want, and the body count rises steadily. But those things are accompanied by artier touches, whether it’s blades of grass swaying in the wind, attempts to delve superficially into the political realities of contemporary South America or just action scenes that unfold with a deliberate — right on the edge of “slow” — pace.

Plot: When brilliant scientist Amber Chesborough vanishes along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband—both elite U.S. Army commandos—struggle to find her amid a guerilla war, discovering that the woman they love might have a secret.
Review: Mark Boal has made a career out of telling military stories. From those grounded in true stories (Zero Dark Thirty) to those inspired by reality (The Hurt Locker), Boal has also transitioned to action-oriented blockbusters like Triple Frontier. His latest project is Echo 3, an international espionage thriller full of gritty action and military tactics that attempts to tell a sociopolitical drama full of heavy stuntwork and complicated storytelling. Despite some truly pulse-pounding firefights that rival any of his big-screen efforts, Mark Boal’s characters cannot rise to the same level of complexity as the action sequences. Echo 3 is decent but far from as good as it should, or could, be.
