Netflix’s first batch of official photos from Zack Snyder’s science fiction epic Rebel Moon shows off the film’s key players. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa 1954 film Seven Samurai, Rebel Moon takes place in a distant part of the galaxy and follows Kora, a mysterious woman (played by Sofia Boutella) who’s tasked with saving a peaceful colony from being wiped out by an invading force.

The cast of the two-part epic includes Ed Skrein as Admiral Atticus Noble, a nefarious Imperium enforcer; Charlie Hunnam as Kai, a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; and Djimon Hounsou as General Titus, a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium.

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder recently explained why his upcoming sci-fi film is getting an alternative, R-rated cut on Netflix.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Snyder confirmed that Rebel Moon will initially be released as a PG-13 film "that anyone can enjoy and watch." He followed that up by stating that a more explicit, harder-edged cut strictly for adults will become available to stream at a later date on Netflix. "I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them," he added. Rebel Moon receiving an R-rated cut was first teased back in March 2023 by Andy Koyama, a recording mixer on the fantasy adventure film.

Zack Snyder‘s sci-fi movie Rebel Moon will be premiering exclusively on Netflix on December 22, the first film in an epic saga that’s set to span at least two features.

Vanity Fair ran an extensive preview piece on Rebel Moon this morning, loaded with first-look images (seen above and below) as well as fresh insights from Snyder himself.

Snyder explains to the site that the second part of the Rebel Moon saga won’t be far behind December’s Part 1, and he also teases two different cuts of the two movies: one that “anyone can enjoy and watch,” plus a more adult version for those “ready to take a deeper, harder dive.”

Deborah Snyder tells the site, meanwhile, “[Rebel Moon] has a bit of Star Wars. It has a bit of everything. It’s a little bit like Lord of the Rings, a little bit Game of Thrones with the palace intrigue.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, who also shared the new images of the film, director Zack Snyder seemed delighted to bring this new project to the world. The outlet describes this as project 30 years in the making and will follow a team of outcasts from disparate planets who join forces to rise to defend one small and vulnerable world.

Snyder also offered up some new clues about the film’s aesthetic. “It’s more of a dieselpunk world than a steampunk world,” the director says. “The technology hasn’t really changed in quite a while.”

Netflix has set a date for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. The space epic will bow Dec. 22 on the streaming service, Netflix revealed Wednesday as part of a broader look at its 2023 slate.

Snyder originally developed Rebel Moon as a potential Star Wars feature more than a decade ago, before Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2021. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

Snyder started at Netflix with the zombie feature Army of the Dead, released in 2021, and is building out a universe based on that concept in addition to the world of Rebel Moon.

Apple's thriller series from The Hurt Locker director Mark Boal Echo 3 is nearing its end. Amber (Jessica Ann Collins) finally reunited with her brother Bambi (Luke Evans) and husband Prince (Michiel Huisman) and was rescued after nine episodes in the custody of rebels. Now, the trio is tasked with escaping the wrath of the Venezuelans and making it back to safety, but the men must grapple with how to handle someone who didn't want to be rescued. Collider can share an exclusive clip from the final episode "Heat" that shows Bambi and Amber having a heart-to-heart regarding her marriage and everything the siblings have been through.

In an eight-season-long show with several recurring faces spending literal years between appearances, it’s not surprising that many Game of Thrones characters were recast throughout the series. Game of Thrones featured an incredible and ever-changing ensemble cast. With such a large variety of characters and storylines during times of wars and violence, it wasn’t uncommon for actors to sign onto the series and expect their characters to die fairly quickly. For example, Game of Thrones was largely promoted with the image of actor Sean Bean for season 1, and his character Ned Stark was surprisingly killed off after only 9 episodes. Quickly showing that nobody is safe in the series, very few characters survived from the first episode through Game of Thrones’ divisive finale, with four of the six Stark siblings and Tyrion Lannister being the key exceptions. However, that doesn't explain all the Game of Thrones recasts.

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder shares a new, behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming Netflix space opera. How did the role of Prince come to you?

For a while after “The Flight Attendant,” we were looking for a project that would feel like another step up. This character is very different from anything I’d ever played before. And it would really allow me to flex my acting muscles, so to speak. So I had to fight a bit to land the role.

Mark Boal’s new Apple TV+ drama Echo 3 will put to the test whether viewers are willing to stick with their militaristic revenge stories if they come packaged with some nuance and characterization. Based on the Israeli format When Heroes Fly, Echo 3 has all the fetishistic shots of weapons and arbitrarily featured American flags one could ever want, and the body count rises steadily. But those things are accompanied by artier touches, whether it’s blades of grass swaying in the wind, attempts to delve superficially into the political realities of contemporary South America or just action scenes that unfold with a deliberate — right on the edge of “slow” — pace.

Plot: When brilliant scientist Amber Chesborough vanishes along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband—both elite U.S. Army commandos—struggle to find her amid a guerilla war, discovering that the woman they love might have a secret.

Review: Mark Boal has made a career out of telling military stories. From those grounded in true stories (Zero Dark Thirty) to those inspired by reality (The Hurt Locker), Boal has also transitioned to action-oriented blockbusters like Triple Frontier. His latest project is Echo 3, an international espionage thriller full of gritty action and military tactics that attempts to tell a sociopolitical drama full of heavy stuntwork and complicated storytelling. Despite some truly pulse-pounding firefights that rival any of his big-screen efforts, Mark Boal’s characters cannot rise to the same level of complexity as the action sequences. Echo 3 is decent but far from as good as it should, or could, be.
