Frightfest 2017: Voice From The Stone Review: Dir. Eric D. Howell (2017)

Voice from the Stone Review: Emilia Clarke leads Voice from the Stone, a chilling ghost story set in 1950’s Tuscany.

Voice from the Stone review, Kat Hughes.

Voice from the Stone Review

It’s hard to believe that just six years ago no one knew the name Emilia Clarke. Since the launch of Game of Thrones she has been catapulted into the major leagues and is known everywhere as being the mother of dragons. In new movie Voice from the Stone she plays a different type of mother, a surrogate mother and carer for a mute boy.

Set during the 1950’s, Clarke stars as Verena, a young nurse hired to help look after a young boy, Jakob (Edward Dring), in an isolated castle in Tuscany. Jakob has been rendered mute since the death of his mother, much to the frustration of his father Klaus (Marton Csokas). As Verna starts to

Howell, for our latest Q&A feature, and we've also been provided with a new clip from the movie.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Eric. What attracted you to this story and made you want to bring Andrew Shaw’s adaptation of Silvio Raffo’s novel to life on the big screen?

Eric D. Howell: The script was one that literally made me want to read under a blanket with a flashlight. It had familiar gothic motifs, but told a story about love, loss, grief, and fear in a way that was completely compelling and original. Andrew is

'Voice from the Stone' Director on Getting to Hollywood With Help From Prince and 'Mighty Ducks'
For Eric D. Howell, getting to direct Voice from the Stone has been a journey years in the making.

The Minnesota native has worked his way up in the business, getting his start as a crewmember in Saint Paul on films such as The Mighty Ducks and Mallrats and working lighting for fellow Minnesotan Prince.

"I didn't know enough to be intimidated by him. He kept asking me back," Howell says with a laugh of his younger days working with the late music icon.

Now, the filmmaker is poised to release his feature directorial debut, with Voice from the Stone opening later...

Trailer Watch: Emilia Clarke Is in Major Trouble in Creepy “Voice from the Stone”

Voice from the Stone

Looks like Emilia Clarke will need to summon her inner Khaleesi. A trailer has been released for the “Game of Thrones” actress’ next film, “Voice from the Stone,” and the footage suggests that her character could use some help from the Mother of Dragons and her fire-breathing friends.

When the spot kicks off, it seems as though the film will be a tearjerker. Verena (Clarke), a nurse, has come to live in the home of a young boy who has fallen silent following the sudden death of his mother. “He saw terrible things. He heard terrible things,” Verena is told. She’s committed to helping him cope, but what seems like a story of grief and recovery quickly goes in an unexpectedly creepy direction. The boy claims to hear his mother’s voice in the wall, and according to his father, he doesn’t want Verena around. And it looks like he — and his late mother — are willing to do pretty much anything to get her out of their home. Cue terrifying footage of some of the awful situations Verena finds herself in. Whether you’re claustrophobic or afraid of heights, there’s something in this trailer to make your skin crawl.

Clarke’s most recent film, Thea Sharrock’s “Me Before You,” grossed nearly $208 million worldwide on a budget of $20 million.

You can catch “Voice from the Stone,” directed by Eric D. Howell (“Strangers”), in theaters and on VOD April 28. The new season of “Game of Thrones” — its seventh — premieres July 16 on HBO.

Author: Zehra Phelan

It has emerged Emilia Clarke has a passion for roles in which she is brought in to help or even nurse those in need of help. Firstly in last year’s Me Before You alongside Sam Claflin now in supernatural thriller Voice from the Stone, judging from the trailer this one will send shivers down your spine.

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke finds herself in horror movie hell in the creepy new thriller she stars in called The Voice in the Stone. The movie has a very gothic horror movie feel to it, and I love the old-school spooky vibe that this trailer radiates. This could actually be a solid horror movie. Here's the synopsis:

Emilia Clarke in First Trailer for Tuscany Thriller 'Voice from the Stone'

"The voice is real." Momentum Pictures has debuted a trailer for a thriller set in Tuscany titled Voice from the Stone, adapted from an Italian novel. Described as a "haunting and suspenseful romance set in 1950s Tuscany" at a 15th-century Italian castle, this Hitchcockian fairytale stars actress Emilia Clarke as Verena, a nurse who cares for a boy who has stopped speaking after the sudden death of his mother. While caring for him, she suddenly starts to hear the eerie voice of the boy's dead mother, making her wonder if she is ill as well. The cast includes Marton Csokas, Caterina Murino, Remo Girone, Lisa Gastoni, and Edward Dring. This looks like a very moody, atmospheric thriller with some sleek cinematography. Check this out. Emilia Clarke Draws A Voice From The Stone In Haunting First Trailer

Last time Emilia Clarke got a break from fantasy and fire-spewing dragons, the actress headlined Me Before You, an admittedly soppy romantic drama in which she played Louisa Clark, a working-class carer who simply radiated happiness and infectious joy. Fast forward a year and change and the Game of Thrones stalwart is about to topline a very different drama known as Voice From the Stone.

Pitched as a “Hitchcockian fairy tale,” USA Today has today unearthed the first trailer of Eric Howell’s ghostly period drama in action. Clarke is on board as Verena, a nurse who agrees to care for young, ailing boy called Jakob, who’s left devastated following the sudden death of his mother. As Voice From the Stone unfolds, though, Jakob’s erratic behavior is enough to send shivers down the spine, after he swears blind that his mother is communicating with him through the castle walls.
