Former pop star admits routine on Channel Seven programme went terribly wrong and says he had no idea what he said

Mark Holden has apologised for his disturbing performance in a clown costume on Dancing With the Stars and reassured audiences it was sober Holden who donned the Stephen King-esque costume, insulted the judges, made jokes about swingers and released smoke from his backside.

Holden, a 60-year-old barrister, 70s pop star and former judge of Australian Idol, and his partner, Jessica Prince, were given a score of four on the Channel Seven celebrity dancing program.

Joel Pearson moves to global Phd role

Former Whybin\Tbwa and The Conscience Organisation planner Joel Pearson has landed a global role as innovation director with media agency Phd working on client Unilever.

Person has already moved to London and started in the new role this week.

It sees him working again with Phd’s global strategy director Mark Holden, who led the relaunch of Total Advertising as Phd in Australia. Pearson worked as an account manager at Phd Australia during 2010. Prior to that he worked at digital agency Amnesia.

Pearson’s appointment is one of a number announced by Phd for its Unilever global comms planning unit.

Former Naked Communications Nz managing partner Robert Ray is also reported to be joining the team.

Media agency Phd has launched a global planning and operating system aimed at putting gamification at the heart of its company culture.

The new system – two years in the making – is the brain child of Phd’s worldwide strategy and planning director Mark Holden who began developing it when he was running strategy for Phd in Australia.

The system, which is called Source, is based on game mechanics. Agency staff score points for various activities and can see how they compare on global and local leader boards. They can see how they score based on criteria including: Thoughtleader, Innovator, Optimiser, Editor and Producer.

Barry O’Brien’s ‘commercially dogged nature’ will help Ten, says ex-phd colleague Mark Holden



Network Ten’s new chief sales officer Barry O’Brien has been backed by former Phd colleague Mark Holden to help Ten “extract disproportionate value from the market”.

O’Brien left Phd in April, and replaced Mike Morrison as Ten’s new sales boss earlier this week.

Holden told Mumbrella: “Barry’s agency perspective, connections, commercially dogged nature and disarming personality will help Ten extract disproportionate value from the market. His arrival is very timely.”

Holden was an influential figure on the Australian media scene during three years at Phd. He left in 2010 to take on a global strategy role at the network, based in London.

Locked and unloaded

Dr Mumbo always had high hopes for the Cock Up Confessional at Mumbrella360.

The first of the videos for the session curated by The Works went up last night. And those confessions from the likes of Peter McDonald, Mark Holden and Simon Corah are certainly worth a look.

But The Works’ own CD Kevin MacNamara takes the cake. Who’d have thought that it was a blunder to pull a gun – even a fake one on a client?

What particularly chills Dr Mumbo is the cold look that comes into MacNamara’s eyes when he contemplates what he would do next time. His menacing East End accent doesn’t help much either.

This is one creative with whom Dr Mumbo will not mess.

The Cock Up Confessional is being curated by creative agency The Works, with the most insightful, and amusing, confessions being played to delegates as one of the final sessions of the conference.

A few short years ago, probably concurrent with the advent of the PVR, a new term emerged within the marketing communications industry; branded content. This was really synonymous with advertiser funded TV shows where programming was created by brands and deals struck with networks to broadcast them.

There were varying degrees of success with this model. Yes it gave rise to Gamekillers developed by Bbh New York for Axe and Iconoclasts developed by @radicalmedia for Grey Goose Vodka. Locally Rexona was behind Greatest Athlete. And no doubt there will be a long list of posts from readers highlighting many other local and global success stories.

But in my opinion, this model never really took off to the extent that many thought it would. And I think there were a number of reasons for this.

Holden: 'Cancer diagnosis was a shock'

Mark Holden has revealed his "shock" at finding out that he had cancer. The former Australian Idol judge, who has re-trained as a barrister since leaving the reality TV show, said that he was "stunned" when the doctor told him that he had primary and secondary cancers in his thyroid and throat earlier this year.
