News Bits: Masculinity, Liminal, Osama, Guardians

Screen Masculinity

For almost a year, Graffiti with Punctuation editor Blake Howard and I have been discussing doing a series of essays about a topic of mutual interest - portrayals of masculinity on screen. The aim is to explore our favorite elements of the topic, to get quite personal and to come up with something hopefully compelling.

That journey continues today with the second piece by myself, arguably one of the most personal pieces of writing I've ever done for the site and sets a tone for promising reading to come. I urge you to check out the piece in our features section, or by clicking here and to leave feedback on it if possible.

Fox 2000 has acquired the supernatural psychological thriller "Liminal" with Christopher Landon set to direct. Landon will also write the script based on a story by Adam Robitel. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing.

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Nikole Beckwith’s Stockholm, Pennsylvania

An actor, musician and a playwright who sort of came swanning into the driver’s seat in 2012 stringing the prestigious Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting and ranking just below Whiplash on the 2012 Black List with the aptly titled Stockholm, Pennsylvania. The double mention jettisoned the first-time writer-director into Sundance’s Directors Lab for June of last year and went into production in early February. Saoirse Ronan and Cynthia Nixon toplined this party-pooper item — which promises to visit a truly dark place in the child survivor psyche, and as the trades suggested at the time, might be shockingly accurate in terms of some baffling real life events that occurred for the captive women they found in Cleveland. Bravura performances are almost assured in what might be a pin-drop subject matter stunner. Arnaud Potier (Mélanie Laurent’s Cannes debuted Respire) and oft Sundance film editor Joe Kloytz are among the tech fold.

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Diane Bell’s Shiva and May

Working from a deeply original aperture, you couldn’t ask for a better calling card with the iconoclastic look into the species. Diane Bell’s debut film was a double winner at Sundance (Alfred P. Sloan Prize and Excellence in Cinematography Award Dramatic) the year that Winter’s Bone won the Grand Jury Prize. While Obselidia garnered fanfare back in 2010, her sophomore film will likely receive more curious onlookers due to the titular pairing of Jessica Biel and Zosia Mamet who’ll be technically breaking out in film with this item. Re-teaming with dp Zak Mulligan, lensing began back in October of 2013 on Shiva and May and since it bypassed all film fests in 2014, there is no doubt that this Girls friendly item will have been among the most earliest submissions sent to the Park City folks.

Gist: Yoga teacher May (Jessica Biel) lives a peaceful, orderly life with her
