Ray Donovan: a show that's well, well worth watching

Robb Sheppard Sep 5, 2017

The fix is in. Here's why Hollywood crime drama Ray Donovan deserves a place among the hallowed TV greats...

Breaking Bad. The Sopranos. The Wire.

Three of the most popular and critically acclaimed serialised dramas. The Mount Rushmore of TV. Look up any list and you’ll see them there, digging their elbows in and jostling for position inside the top ten.

But if we’re going with the Mount Rushmore metaphor, there’s a blank space on the mountain and an argument for Ray Donovan to have his face carved into the rock, nestled between McNulty, Tony and Heisenberg.

Donovan’s the answer to Hollywood’s biggest problems: Heavyweight boxing champ has a dead girl in his bath tub? Call Ray. Pop megastar bribed with a sex tape leak?

Tribeca 2017 Interview(s): The cast and crew of ‘Chuck’

Rocky. Rocky II. Rocky III. Rocky IV….I could keep going and somehow we’ll end with Creed, but that doesn’t matter. What does, however, is who Rocky was inspired after, and what that man has to lay claim to fame.

Chuck Wepner is his name. He’s the man that went fifteen rounds in the ring with the man of the hour, Muhammad Ali. Chuck also happens to be the name of the new film coming out about his life in and out of the ring and show business. Directed by Philippe Falardeau (who had previously directed The Good Lie), the film stars Liev Schreiber as Chuck Wepner, Naomi Watts as Linda, Elisabeth Moss as Phyliss, Jim Gaffigan as John, and Ron Perlman as Al Braverman.

Of course, since this is a dramatic version of real life events, it wouldn’t be a film without having Sylvester Stallone

Movie Review – Chuck (2017)

Chuck, 2017.

Directed by Phillipe Falardeau.

Starring Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss, Ron Perlman, Jim Gaffigan, Morgan Spector, Pooch Hall, Zina Wilde, Sadie Sink, and Naomi Watts.

Synopsis:

A drama inspired by the life of heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner.

Are strong acting and unrecognizable familiar faces enough to push a film over the hump from bad to good? Usually yes, but Chuck (also known as The Bleeder in other territories) is a rare sort of misfire that only has the talent in front of the screen going for it. Directed by Phillipe Falardeau (The Good Lie and Monsieur Lazhar), notable names such as Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss, Ron Perlman, and more have all gone through impressive physical transformations, whether it be from physical makeovers to New Jersey accents and more, and while they all generally seem to be firing on all cylinders including having excellent chemistry with one another (Naomi Watts, the

Festival Feature: The Films of the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival

Chicago – The 16th Tribeca Film Festival wrapped last Sunday (April 30, 2017) and the award-winning films of the festival have been named. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com was there for the first week of Tribeca and files his personal best of the films he experienced.

This is Patrick switching to first person, and I was able to see 13 media and film works, and took a turn in the “Immersive” or Virtual Reality arcade (there will a separate article on that experience). I sampled TV, short films, documentaries and narrative films, and rank them from first preferred on down, but honestly I didn’t see anything that I didn’t like, which is a testament to the programmers of this iconic film festival.

The following are the prime 13, and an indication of when they are scheduled to release…

A Dog’s Purpose review: Dir. Lasse Hallström (2017)

A Dog’s Purpose review: Dennis Quaid, Bryce Gheisar and Josh Gad lead the cast of this pleasant and very uplifting family movie from accomplished filmmaker Lasse Hallström.

A Dog’s Purpose review by Paul Heath, May 2017.

A Dog’s Purpose, which is actually based on the novel of the same name by W. Bruce Cameron, who also co-writes the screenplay, is broken down into several chunks, each one narrated by Gad telling the story from the point of view of a different dog. The narrative covers the life of that dog from birth to death, and, once it dies, is reincarnated into a different breed, and sometimes different sex. The first, set sometime in the 1950s, follows golden retriever Bailey, a dog owned by an eight year old named Ethan and his family. The story spans the course of a decade until the teenage Ethan (K.J. Apa) moves away to college,

Every year, celebrities, filmmakers, journalists and movie fans flock to the Tribeca neighborhood in lower Manhattan for the Tribeca Film Festival, an illustrious celebration of film and television that features some of the most exciting projects and panel discussions of any media festival in the country.

Founded by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff in 2001, shortly after the attacks of 9/11, the festival has helped revitalize the city and remind both filmmakers and fans alike of New York City’s valued place in film and TV while becoming a welcoming community for voices and perspectives from all over the world. “It’s also a fabric of our city. So whether or not it’s a film from Israel or Palestine or something for kids, our festival was about community and it still is,” Rosenthal tells Et. “It’s about bringing community together.”

The 2017 festival, which runs April 19-30, continues to expand beyond film and TV with
