Günter Grass was born on 16 October 1927 in Free City of Danzig [now Gdansk, Pomorskie, Poland]. He was a writer, known for The Tin Drum (1979), Unkenrufe (2005) and Television Theater (1953). He was previously married to Ute Grunert and Anna Margareta Schwartz. He died on 13 April 2015 in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

In an interview with the 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung', Grass admitted that he was a member of the Waffen-SS shortly before the end of World War II. As he often used to criticize Germany's long repression of its Nazi past, this late confession caused mixed reactions from indignation to disappointment [11 August 2006].
