Whether the internet likes it or not, Velma is back for Season 2. The adult animated series, which first premiered on Max in 2023, returns with another round of mysteries and hijinks on Thursday, April 25.
Created by Charlie Grandy, the show is an alternate universe origin story that reimagines the Scooby-Doo gang as high schoolers. It centers on sarcastic teenage detective Velma (Mindy Kaling) and her friends Fred (Glenn Howerton), Daphne (Constance Wu), and Norville (Sam Richardson), aka Shaggy. Scooby-Doo himself notably doesn’t appear, in part due to rights issues between the studios.

HBO Max's "Velma" isn't your average Scooby-Doo show - and not just because there's literally no Scooby-Doo in it. In the new animated series, which wrapped up its first season on Feb. 9, the world of Mystery Inc. gets an adult twist with Mindy Kaling, Sam Richardson, Glenn Howerton, and Constance Wu voicing the roles of Velma Dinkley, Norville "Shaggy" Rogers, Fred Jones, and Daphne Blake, respectively.
The series, which was developed by Charlie Grandy, with Kaling serving as an executive producer, has a more mature tone than classic cartoon specials and features bloody murders and even some nudity. But the biggest change to the beloved mystery-solvers cartoon comes at the end of "Velma"'s second episode - when Daphne kisses Velma!
Here's how it happens: The show's plot follows Velma, who loves solving mysteries because her mom was a mystery writer. However, her mother went missing years back, and whenever...

Everyone is talking about “Velma,” the new R-rated animated series based on the lore of “Scooby-Doo,” that just debuted on HBO Max.
Centered around the titular mystery of Mystery Inc. (now voiced by Mindy Kaling), who is dealing with her missing mother, her strained relationship with Daphne (Constance Wu) and the fact that her plutonic Bff Norville “Shaggy” Rogers (Sam Richardson) is secretly in love with her. Oh and Fred (Glenn Howerton) is the prime suspect in a series of grisly murders. Featuring course language and plenty of nudity and gore, “Velma” takes the preexisting franchise into much darker, more mature territory.
It’s such a huge swing that you are right to wonder where this series came from (and who okayed it). TheWrap asked creator Charlie Grandy and star Mindy Kaling about the show’s secret origins and if there was any pushback to how extreme it went.

Mindy Kaling herself voices Velma, the glasses wearing smart nerd of the Scooby-doo gang, and like Kaling, Velma’s roots lie in India immigrants. The rest of the gang is diverse, with bi-racial Norville Aka Shaggy (Sam Richardson) adopted Asian-American Daphne (Constance Wu) and still-white-male Fred (Glenn Howerton). This is an origin story, and of course there are mysteries to be solved.

Mindy Kaling’s name speaks for itself in Hollywood — for better or worse.
The comedy multihyphenate who got her start writing for and acting in “The Office” just starred in HBO Max’s “Velma,” an adult series executive produced by Kaling and created by Charlie Grandy. In January, Kaling’s first solo show, 2012’s “The Mindy Project,” made its Netflix debut. The perfect storm of new and old — highlighting common threads in Kaling’s work — has resulted in a fresh wave of online backlash against the creator and her oeuvre. This latest round of criticism cites internalized racism, lazy writing, and more issues, but what’s driving those feelings is actually quite simple: fatigue. At this point in her career, Kaling fans know the type of character that she will play or write, yet some viewers continue to hate-watch and fume at what the creator long ago stated as her thesis.

This week “Velma,” a new, very-adults-only take on the origins of the “Scooby-Doo” mythology, debuts on HBO Max. Created by Charlie Grandy and starring his frequent collaborator Mindy Kaling, this is a version of the popular Saturday morning cartoon that you have never seen before. Sure, the kids are all in high school and there are plenty of mysteries afoot but beyond that, this is otherwise almost a completely new show. And while the R-rated take on “Scooby-Doo” is a good logline, the series is ultimately more invested in character than it is the cheap thrills of being able to show blood, gore and (implied) nudity.
But speaking of those characters, want to know who appear in “Velma?” Look no further!

HBO Max's "Velma" looks nothing like any "Scooby-Doo" we've seen before. Some of the changes the new series has made to the half-century-old franchise are obviously good ones, like character redesigns that imagine some Mystery Inc. characters as people of color, and a romantic subplot between Daphne (Constance Wu) and Velma (Mindy Kaling). Others are a little more unexpected, like the weird amount of emphasis the show pays to Fred's (Glenn Howerton) puberty timeline, and the fact that he, Daphne, and Velma all start the series as totally unlikeable jerks.
Although his character remains the most endearing of the bunch, Sam Richardson's Shaggy may have gone through one of the biggest transformations of any of his fellow mystery-solvers. The lanky, green-wearing high schooler here goes by his given name of Norville, and he doesn't have the Great Dane companion the series is most known-for. He's also not a stoner or beatnik,...

Everyone loves an underdog story — even one that conspicuously excludes a literal dog. That’s the drive behind HBO Max’s “Velma,” an origin story about its titular bespectacled mystery solver who goes on to be integral, if under-appreciated, in the core gang of “Scooby-Doo.” The animated series was developed by Charlie Grandy and executive produced by Grandy, Mindy Kaling, Howard Klein, and Sam Register. Over the course of eight episodes screened to critics (out of 10 total in Season 1), “Velma” proves to be a send up of high school shows, crime dramas, and television at large, full of all-star performances and packed with punchlines.

“Scooby-Doo” fans were gifted “Velma” – Mindy Kaling’s own “adult animated series” on HBO Max.
Since its trailer release, much has been spoken about the title character. Fans praised Warner Bros. for writing Velma Dinkley as a lesbian. So, there was controversy when the advertisement for HBO Max’s adult animated series “Velma” failed to hint that the title character might be gay and even indicated that she had a crush on Fred.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Episodes 1 and 2 of “Velma.”
Months ago, fans celebrated the win of Velma Dinkley being written as a lesbian in the Warner Bros. Animation movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” For years, there had been discussions among fans about the character’s coded queerness, and creatives like James Gunn and Tony Cervone had spoken up about trying — and failing — to explore that in their “Scooby-Doo” projects. So when the marketing for HBO Max’s adult animated series “Velma” didn’t indicate that the title character might be gay — and even revealed that she had a crush on Fred — there was backlash. If the “Scooby-Doo” studio is apparently on board now, why wouldn’t Velma like girls?
The answer is that she does. And so does Daphne. After decades of “friendship” across the plethora of “Scooby-Doo” cartoons, live-action movies and spinoffs, tension breaks and the...

Since “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?” premiered as a Saturday morning cartoon on CBS back on September 13, 1969, it has become a staple of pop culture –the Mystery Machine, the insatiable Great Dane and the small-scale conspiracies that undoubtedly involve a villainous landowner and a rubber mask, have appeared in a variety of television series, movies (on the big and small-screen) and other miscellaneous media.
“Scooby-Doo” has been interpreted for live-action, computer animation and beyond. And the latest iteration of the property is “Velma,” which focuses on our favorite glasses-wearing, mystery-solving super-nerd. And this might be the most radical reinvention yet, with a harder edge, an intriguing central mystery and a wonderful art style that borrows from “Steven Universe” and oscillates between adorable and chilling.
But when (and where?) can you watch “Velma?” Read on to find out!

On paper, “Velma” sounds like a great idea: Mindy Kaling reimagines the iconic Scooby Gang member for a new century in a pre-Mystery Inc. prequel, making her a character of color, leaning into the long-held speculation about her sexuality, ditching the dog. For the new HBO Max animated series — adult-oriented in the Harley Quinn vein — Kaling re-teams with Charlie Grandy, her longtime co-collaborator on “The Mindy Project” and elsewhere, and the pair have a solid history of delivering enjoyable comedy to the small screen.
So you have to wonder, in the development of “Velma,” where did everything go so horribly wrong? To be crystal (cove) clear, it’s definitely not in the introduction of racial diversity to the formerly all-white cast – not just Velma but also Daphne (Constance Wu) as Asian, Norbert (Sam Richardson) as Black – or the reveal that Velma’s longings for a female classmate may go past friendship.

If the rule for covers of widely cherished songs — make it your own, or leave it alone — holds for adaptations of beloved television shows, then in one respect, HBO Max’s “Velma” is a towering success. To be fair, this thoroughly modern reimagining of “Scooby-Doo” maintains the load-bearing beams of the over 50-year-old cartoon’s lore. It’s still set in Crystal Cove, a coastal enclave known for its gem deposits, teenage busybodies and, depending on whom you ask, an overpopulation of either ghosts or fallen magnates with a passion for cosplay.
Beyond that, “Velma” is irreverent to a fault. Starring Mindy Kaling, and developed by her longtime collaborator Charlie Grandy, “Velma” treats most of the “Scooby” canon as suggestions whispered too low to be heard. The most obvious detour is the absence of the iconic talking dog, as “Velma” is a prequel set well before the events of the...

"We do make a good team, don't we?" HBO Max has unveiled the first official trailer for the series Velma, the animated series focusing on Velma Dinkley, the nerdy character from the Scooby Doo series. Created by Warner Bros Animation, and developed by comedian Charlie Grandy, this series is an "adult" version of Scooby Doo, less so about the dog and more about high school mania. The series focuses on Velma Dinkley and the rest of Mystery Inc. before their official formation, pitched as a "love quadrangle" between them. "This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers." Mindy Kaling voices Velma, along with Sam Richardson as Norville "Shaggy" Rogers, Constance Wu as Daphne Blake, and Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones, plus Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, and Wanda Sykes. Velma will launch for streaming starting this week,...

Here is what HBO Max’s Velma is not: It’s not the Scooby-Doo you remember from your childhood, or that your parents do from theirs. (The Great Dane doesn’t even appear, in fact.) It’s neither a faithful update of those wholesome old cartoons, nor an attempt to reboot them with more dramatic heft. It’s not just another supernatural teen drama, and it’s not just another superhero origin story.
It’s too smart for all of that, or so it believes. From its first minutes, Velma is a thoroughly meta affair, winking at the sillier staples of the Scooby-Doo universe, at the lore and the stereotypes built around its characters, at the absurdity of TV screenwriting conventions in general. But if Velma delights in sending up all the usual tropes, it seems somewhat less sure of what it has to offer in their stead.

A new version of Scooby-Doo‘s Velma Dinkley is coming on HBO Max with Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy’s Velma. But the character at the center of the adult animated series is just the latest in a long line of iconic female sleuths on television. Ahead of the series’ January 12 premiere on the streamer, TV Insider spoke with creators Grandy and Kaling at New York Comic-Con to find out more about the latest entree into the Scooby-verse. Kaling, who also voices the titular character, and Grandy then had some fun comparing their Velma to some of our other favorite TV detectives, from Netflix’s Jessica Jones to Murder, She Wrote‘s Jessica Fletcher. Kaling shares that Velma “idolizes Olivia Benson” of Law & Order: Svu and is a lot like “Veronica Mars — with much worse vision.” Grandy also adds that the series references both Jessica Fletcher and Miss Marple. Jinkies! Velma is going solo in early 2023.
HBO Max has set a Jan. 12, 2023, release date for Mindy Kaling’s animated series “Velma,” a spinoff of the beloved, but family-friendly, “Scooby-Doo” series.
In this modern, adult-oriented take on the classic “Scooby-Doo” franchise, the series follows the origin story of Velma Dinkley (Kaling), the brainiac of the Mystery Inc. gang. After a corpse is found in her high school, Velma teams up with Daphne (Constance Wu), Shaggy (Sam Richardson) and Fred (Glenn Howerton) to solve the murder.
The official logline reads, “This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”
Back in October, Kaling and showrunner Charlie Grandy revealed at New York Comic Con that Scooby-Doo himself will not make an appearance in the series. Kaling’s series also reimagines several members of the Mystery Inc. gang, including making Velma of South Asian descent.

Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy are bringing a new, modernized version of Velma — and the rest of the Scooby Gang — to HBO Max in 2023, and given their love for the original series, it looks to be in good hands. Velma‘s Kaling (who also voices the titular character) and Grandy sat down with Damian Holbrook in TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine‘s studio at New York Comic Con 2022 to discuss the new series and getting the chance to play with such iconic characters. Both grew up watching the original Scooby Doo, and so “it’s such a joy to be able to work with those characters,” Kaling said, adding how grateful they are to Hanna Barbera and Warner Bros. Animation that they can do that in addition to having the chance to “modernize certain elements.” That being said, Kaling added, it is “terrifying, too, because everyone loves Velma. You...

The “Scooby-Doo” universe is about to come back in a big way, but don’t expect Scooby-Doo to be involved. “Velma,” a new adult animated series that features Mindy Kaling as the voice of the titular character, promises to satisfy longtime fans of the cartoon series who want to pair their nostalgia with a more mature sense of humor. It features adult versions of the crew from the mystery machine, but in order to ensure that Velma is front and center, Scooby himself won’t be making any appearances.
Appearing on a panel for the show at New York Comic-Con (via Insider), showrunner Charlie Grandy explained that the decision to omit Scooby-Doo from the series was an attempt to differentiate the adult show from the family friendly property that inspired it.
“When we were going into the show and thinking about adapting it, we wanted to be respectful,” Grandy said.

HBO Max is taking their Scooby-Doo property and giving it a fun spoof angle. The new trailer has just dropped via YouTube and showcases Velma Dinkley, voiced here by The Office and The Mindy Project’s Mindy Kaling, giving the HBO Max company itself some hate mail as the unsuspecting sleuth receives a call from a mysterious figure who threatens her.

While promoting HBO Max’s Velma at New York Comic Con on Thursday, star and EP Mindy Kaling admitted that she was surprised by the social media reaction to her decision to make the beloved character a South Asian girl.
“I think of the characters in this are iconic but in no way …are they defined by their whiteness,” Kaling told the crowd. “Most Indian American [women], when they see skeptical, hardworking under-appreciated characters, they can identify with her. The vast majority are ready for it. This show is for them.”

“Growing up I identified with Velma,” continued Kaling. “She was so cute but not traditionally hot .. with a questionable haircut. I feel so honored I get to do the voice … she’s a truth teller, cutting through the bullshit of life. When you are smart and under-appreciated.
