Biography

    • Song lyricist ("When You're Smiling", "Everywhere You Go") and a charter ASCAP member (1914), educated in public schools and a songwriter since World War I when he wrote songs for the 81st Wildcats. Thereafter he was a monologist in vaudeville and a professional manager for music publishers. Besides his film-music work he wrote songs and musical material for London revues. His chief musical collaborators included Nat Ayer, Louis Alter, Gus Edwards, George Meyer, Al Piantadosi, Mark Fisher, and Larry Shay, and his other popular-song compositions include "That's How I Need You", "Billy", "When I Get You Alone Tonight", "When You Play in the Game of Love", "Baby Shoes", "Liberty Bell It's Time to Ring Again", "Gee, But I Hate to Go Home Again", "I'm Knee Deep in Daisies", "They're Wearing 'Em Higher in Hawaii" and "Breeze".
