Before House of the Dragon had us side-eyeing family trees and counting dragon eggs, there was A Song of Ice and Fire—the sprawling, bloody, and brilliantly messy fantasy epic that started it all. Written by George R. R. Martin (a.k.a. the man who made readers fear weddings forever), the book series redefined what modern fantasy could look like. No elves, no chosen ones, just power plays, morally grey characters, and a world where literally no one is safe.
The series kicked off in 1996 with A Game of Thrones and is (still!) ongoing, with five books released so far out of a planned seven. Each one is stuffed with layered political intrigue, brutal wars, dragons, direwolves, and enough backstabbing to make Shakespeare sit up in his grave.

Game of Thrones, despite its worldwide popularity, is highly infamous for how it ended. While a section of fans outright cancels the show’s existence after Season 6, another section can list a series of problems that plagued its conclusion.
When the creators, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, sat for an interview during the release of 3 Body Problem, they were asked if they would like to change anything about the show. Although we can list a myriad of plot points that took GoT downhill in its last season, the creator duo responded with a change that nobody expected to hear: Mord the Jailer’s story. Yes, you heard it right!

When you watch the Game of Thrones… you stay obsessed. If you’re still salty about Bran the Broken ruling the Seven Kingdoms—same, my friend. Game of Thrones didn’t just steal our hearts; it stabbed them like Arya in a faceless frenzy. Season 8? A betrayal worthy of the Night’s Watch. But even with its chaos and controversy, Thrones remains the wildfire of modern TV—unpredictable, addictive, and utterly iconic.
Every Sunday felt like a battle cry, a call to arms, a new twist at King’s Landing. And while we hope House of the Dragon brings balance to the realms, Game of Thrones still reigns as a cultural juggernaut. The real power move? It wasn’t Ned’s fall, Dany’s dragons, or even that cursed wedding.
The most vital moment came cloaked in shadows, quiet but game-changing. You ready? Sharpen your Valyrian steel, pour the Dornish...

If you found your way into the Game of Thrones fandom, you probably realized just after a few episodes that there was no way out. From selfless heroes to villains that make you want to rip your hair out, the fantasy drama has it all. Speaking of villains that make you want to commit crimes…let’s talk about Jack Gleeson, who played the most punchable king in television history.
Joffrey Baratheon. The name is enough to give you a sudden urge to throw your remote at the screen, or maybe just scream into a pillow. Because, come on, how can someone be That evil?! There’s only a handful of characters whose deaths I have actually celebrated, and Joffrey sure is at the top of the list. Which is why seeing Jack Gleeson’s audition for the role has me convinced that the actor needs to come back to the entertainment industry,...

Before Bella Ramsey was the lead on The Last of Us, they played Lyanna Mormont onGame of Thrones, which also starred Kit Harington as Jon Snow. Now, Ramsey and Snow have reunited, and they remembered an awkward story from the Game of Thrones set.
The two of them sat down for Interview magazine sitdown recently, and Ramsey asked Harington if he remembered one moment that was slightly embarrassing for him. "I don’t know whether you remember this, but I remember it quite vividly and have some remorse for it now, but during that scene [where Snow approaches Lyanna Mormont] I was mouthing your lines to you."
Harington did remember. Ramsey went on, "Now I’m like, 'Oh my gosh, how awful.' But at the time it came from a very innocent place of being like, 'Kit’s struggling with his line and I know it, so let me just mouth it to him.

To think about it, maybe Joffrey Baratheon wasn’t the absolute worst thing to happen to King’s Landing, as his actor was at least having fun during his death scene.
Everyone who has watched the show appears to possess mixed feelings about the wicked boy-king. This also applies to Jack Gleeson, who portrayed Joffrey in the fourth season of Game of Thrones. The Irish star’s role lasted just a handful of episodes that season, until he was poisoned at his own wedding.
Joffrey Baratheon is one of the most intriguing characters to have appeared on the Game of Thrones stage. Maybe he was the worst character Game of Thrones had to offer, but Gleeson didn’t let that spoil his fun.
Was he bummed about what happened to his character? Not really….
Everyone almost cheered when he accidentally ate a huge bite of poisoned pie, and died in front of the entire court.

A lot of people die on "Game of Thrones." No, really; the Washington Post actually tracked all of the show's deaths and figured out that 6,887 characters, both named and unnamed, perish throughout the HBO series (which is based on George R.R. Martin's equally bloody novel series "A Song of Ice and Fire"). Apparently, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss played favorites just a bit when it came to their 8-season series that massacred heroes and villains in equal measure. In a March 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote their Netflix series "3 Body Problem," Benioff and Weiss said there were two characters they just loved killing: Jack Gleeson's King Joffrey Baratheon and Iwan Rheon's dastardly bastard-turned-heir Ramsay Bolton.

Through the lengthy history of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and the "Peaky Blinders," Birmingham's notorious crime family has seen off plenty of threats. Some of them have forged weary alliances in your classic "enemy of my enemy is my friend" dynamic, but for Finn Cole's Michael Gray, it was a blooming danger from within the criminal family itself.
Michael made his debut in the second and best season of "Peaky Blinders" as the long-lost son of Polly Gray (Helen McRory), who initially made a great effort to keep him out of the family business. That proved to be a failed effort, however, as Michael became a strong asset as the family business accountant and gradually made his way up the ladder to the point that tension gradually began to build between Polly's estranged son and her brother at the head of the organization. Dream will continue his journey through the cosmos after almost three years. Based on Neil Gaiman’s DC comic series, the first season of The Sandman was much loved by the viewers for the way it balanced dark fantasy and supernatural horror. The show follows Morpheus (aka Dream), the anthropomorphic personification of dreams and stories, as he rebuilds his realm after a century of imprisonment, with the story exploring a ton of myths and family drama.
Now, the finale season is almost here. Showrunners Allan Heinberg, David S. Goyer, and Neil Gaiman will soon bring Dream’s story to an end, but not before one last ride. Here’s everything you need to know before The Sandman returns.

One of the finest additions to the world of fantasy dramas, The Sandman lore has been amusing fans for ages — first through its comic book series, which was released in 1989, and then its live-action adaptation in the form of a television series, which first debuted on the screens in 2022. But it is not done leaving fans at the edge of their seats just yet.
That said, fans of the live-action saga might as well rejoice once again, for the masterpiece series will soon be returning with its second season to the television screens. And, this time around, it is expected to bring about even more entertainment than before as it seems to be here to school every fantasy drama a thing or two on sibling rivalry.

Netflix will release the second and final season of “The Sandman” in two volumes: the first six episodes will premiere on July 3, followed by the final five episodes on July 24.

Westeros isn’t exactly anyone’s dream vacation spot — unless you have a taste for wine-soaked betrayal, political bloodbaths, and the occasional dragon-fueled catastrophe. Sure, the White Walkers brought a chilling threat from beyond the Wall, but let’s be honest: it was the human villains who made Game of Thrones truly unforgettable. From psychological torment to jaw-dropping betrayals, they delivered the kind of twisted drama that had us gasping, “Oh no, they did not!”
These characters didn’t just kill. They made a sport of cruelty, wielded power like a scalpel, and treated trust like a toy to smash. But villainy comes in many shades, some subtle and strategic, others drenched in blood and chaos.

If you had asked Kit Harington about the Jon Snow spin-off right around the time when Game of Thrones was ending, you would have heard a hard no. He didn’t have it in him to star in another Got-based content at the time and he made it clear during an interview with Rich Eisen.
However, he later agreed to a Jon Snow spin-off, although he rarely spoke about it when it was in development.

Interestingly, he only decided to comment on it when he was sure that the spin-off had been shelved at HBO. While Harington didn’t give a clear reason why he agreed to the spin-off, his comments make it seem like he wasn’t entirely on board with the idea.

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.” And if you’re a fan of HBO’s iconic fantasy series, you know just how true that was! With characters dropping like flies, the show introduced an unforgettable cast over its eight-season run. Premiering in 2011, Game of Thrones redefined television with its gripping storytelling, breathtaking battles, and jaw-dropping betrayals.
Back then, many of its stars were either rising newcomers—like Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams—or established actors who found even greater fame, including Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Sean Bean.
Some, like Clarke and Harington, have kept the fantasy spirit alive with new projects, while Turner and Williams have explored bold, unconventional roles. Meanwhile, Dinklage continues to prove his versatility, and Headey has taken on exciting new challenges. Whether ruling new realms on-screen or making waves in Hollywood, the Game of Thrones...

If there’s one thing we learned from Game of Thrones aside from never attending weddings in Westeros, it’s that playing a fan-favorite or fan-hated character can mess with an actor’s life in ways they never imagined. Some actors ride the wave of their iconic roles, others struggle to break free from them, and some just disappear into a quiet life of contemplation, wondering why their character wasn’t given a pet dragon.

Take Kit Harington and Jack Gleeson, for example. They both walked away from Game of Thrones with their own battle scars, emotional baggage, and a newfound awareness that fans can be… intense.
While Harington found himself boxed into the brooding hero archetype, Gleeson had to deal with people assuming he was an actual medieval psychopath. So, how did these two actors deal with their post-Westerosi lives?...

Big news, Dead Boy Detectives fans! While the ‘Sandman Universe’ show may not be returning for a second season, star Jayden Revri (Charles Rowland) is confirmed to appear in the final season of The Sandman, coming later this year!
In January, Netflix confirmed that The Sandman season 2 would be the end of the road for the fantasy series. We pretty much knew the show’s fate anyway, given that leaks from the set for the upcoming season showed that the team was filming scenes from the end of the comics. Hearing that the show was ending, while disappointing, wasn’t much of a surprise. The final season is confirmed to be released in 2025.

Game of Throneshas been hailed as one of the best TV shows ever, albeit marred by a final season of disappointing episodes. Even so, there's one certainty for anyone who has watched Game of Thrones, and that's that HBO's fantasy show is simply unforgettable in the genre and medium.
Game of Thrones houses many incredible highs and far fewer lows. While the shocks were not always palatable to most fans, the adaptation of George R. R. Martin's books always kept viewers on their toes with awe-inspiring and unpredictable twists and turns. The award-winning show's catalog is stacked with moments that stay glued in the minds of fans, and these episodes are the ones almost always discussed when it comes to Game of Thrones' most memorable.

Updated with the latest: The Sandman, based on the comics by Neil Gaiman, will end with its second season. This news came following allegations of misconduct and sexual assault against Gaiman, which has resulted in his other projects being paused or canceled. The decision to end the story with Season 2 was made before filming on the second installment began.
“‘The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg wrote in a post shared on X. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.

All good dreams must come to an end sooner or later, and so it goes that a very good Dream is about to come to an end imminently on Netflix. In news that will likely come as a surprise to precisely nobody, today the streaming giant has announced that its dark fantasy epic The Sandman will conclude with the release of its upcoming second season. Officially, the line is that the series is finishing because the story of Tom Sturridge's Morpheus — aka Dream — is coming to its natural end. And while that is doubtless a key factor, much like Prime Video's suddenly cut short Good Omens, it's hard not to assume that the serious and ongoing allegations of sexual misconduct that have been brought against creator Neil Gaiman in recent months have played their part in Netflix's decision to pull the plug. Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” will end with its upcoming second season.
“The Sandman” Season 2 has been a long time coming. The first season debuted in August 2022, and it wasn’t renewed at Netflix until November of that year. At that time, Netflix was also hesitant to label it as a second season at all, choosing instead to say it was “a continuation of ‘The Sandman’ world,” and wouldn’t commit to an episode count. Variety has confirmed the second season of “The Sandman” was intended to be the last prior to filming in 2023.

Natalie Dormer believes that she should have received more credit for the role that she played in HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. In an interview in 2016, the actress talked about what made her character so much more difficult to play when compared to, say, Jack Gleeson’s Joffrey Baratheon.

This article contains discussions of sexual assault.
It's an understatement to say that a lot of characters on "Game of Thrones" meet some very, very ugly ends ... and that certainly includes Shae, the character played by Sibel Kekilli who appears in 20 episodes of the hit HBO fantasy series. Shae — who also appears in "A Song of Ice and Fire," the book series by George R.R. Martin that serves as the source material for the series — first shows up in season 1 of the show and sticks around until the end of season 4, where she meets that aforementioned ugly end ... but before that, she spends pretty much all of her time in the orbit of "the Imp," Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), a man whose family despises him nearly as much as he hates them in return. At first, Shae and Tyrion's relationship is actually really sweet and even romantic, but true love...

As much as Game of Thrones is loved for all the stunning plotlines and jaw-dropping moments it has brought forward through the words of George R.R. Martin, there have also been quite a few instances where the complex narratives could have really been narrowed down to much simpler ones. This stands especially true while considering the show’s controversial final seasons.

Game of Thrones used to be one of the finest book-based live-action adaptations of all time before a disastrous finale made pretty much all of its hard work to make the show a masterpiece go to waste. While the show had the perfect cast and characters, the writing of the plotlines was where everything took a turn downhill, especially in the later seasons.

Deep down, everybody loves a great antagonist who is oh so good at being bad, a nefarious and unscrupulous evil who is worth hating with a passion. With the rampant rise of television entertainment as a prestigious storytelling form, such antagonists on the small screen have become commonplace, be they utterly detestable cretins like Game of Thrones’ Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) or charismatic psychopaths like Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan from The Walking Dead.

This article contains spoilers for many major fantasy TV shows! For every unforgettable moment in a fantasy TV show, there are just as many controversial moments that push viewers to their breaking point. Even the most popular fantastical TV series in history have included scenes that were so polarizing that audiences stop watching the show altogether. Typically, these plot points revolve around the introduction or exit of characters, as this can dramatically alter the series' dynamic and be devastating to witness. TV deaths often spark outrage when viewers feel that the character didn't deserve to be killed off and still had more to contribute.
There are many fantasy TV scenes that make no sense, but this is more excusable, as the complex magic systems and world-building in speculative fiction shows can become confusing. However, when a series makes a concrete and avoidable choice that alienates audience members, it's much more difficult to accept this.

Hollywood is the entertainment capital of the world of entertainment and for many, it is a lifelong dream to make it in the cutthroat world of Tinseltown. Even though it is hard to say relevant for it requires an unprecedented amount of dedication, resilience, and hard work, the fame, acclaim, and money make it all worth it in the end. So, even though it is hard to reach the top, some would literally make a deal with the devil to remain in the game.

Game of Thrones fandom has never shied away from voicing their opinions to make the series better than it already is. They have scrutinized everything from character arcs to costume choices, and the showrunners were generous enough to incorporate a few, but George R.R. Martin wasn’t one to push detailed changes on the actors.

Even though it’s his source material and it would be understandable if he wanted to tweak a few things in the show to make them book-accurate, Martin knows better. In fact, the author even defended the show and its willingness to not put up with absurd demands.

Amid all the mountain of critiques, one complaint that stood out the most was the lack of purple eyes in the Targaryen family.

George R.R. Martin’s original plan for A Song of Ice and Fire contained many scenes that we never witnessed in the novels and the television series, one of which included a duel between two prominent characters from Game of Thrones. Fans would surely feel robbed of the opportunity after they learn that Joffrey Baratheon and Robb Stark were planned to go against each other.

The deaths of these characters, which we have seen in the show, were very different from the initial plan; although, it’s fair to say that their demise in the series was far more brutal and memorable than in the outline.

It’s always exciting when a TV show takes a massive risk that really pays off, but it can be insanely frustrating when these surprising writing decisions fall flat on their face. While huge twists, impulsive character decisions, or unusual storytelling choices can keep things interesting, they also have the potential to alienate audiences and lead to storylines that the writers opt to quietly discard rather than continue telling an unpopular plot. This has been a problem across comedy, drama, and even fantasy series that have tried something new with their storyline, only to have viewers flat-out reject the risk.
Many of the best TV shows of all time have taken massive risks, only for them to not work out and have to backtrack on their storylines. This has seen previously deceased characters inexplicably return to life, established backstories being badly rewritten, or even final seasons that ruined the legacy...

Deaths in Game of Thrones are always violent and upsetting, but there’s probably one character’s demise that ended up being celebrated by many, instead of being mourned. The marriage of Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell became iconic and unforgettable because it also signaled the end of the king’s reign.

The wedding celebration turned out to be a tragedy, with Joffrey seemingly choking on his food until he turned purple and eventually dying due to poisoning. This event, as satisfying as it was for many, was not merely George R.R. Martin’s whim to kill off the much-hated king – it was based on a real-life story.
