‘Coco’ Blu-ray Review

Manny Films Joins Magma, Storyboard on ‘The Commitment’ (Exclusive)

In a deal announced at the Cannes Film Festival, Argentina’s Magma Cine and Chile’s Storyboard Media have closed co-production on the highly-anticipated historical drama “The Commitment.” The agreement will see the South American companies partner with French independent producers Manny Films.

Based in Paris, Manny Films was founded just over a decade ago, and focuses on internationally-aimed co-productions in feature films and high-end TV series. Films which they have produced which screened at Cannes include: “The Ardor,” starting Gael García Bernal; the animated “Lascars” which starred Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger, and 2015’s “The Chosen Ones” among others.

“The Commitment” was written by Paola Campos, Bernardita Olmedo and Fernando Castillo, and is directed by Argentine Benjamín Ávila, whose 2011 film “Clandestine Childhood” world premiered at Cannes. He also scored a Goya, and cleaned up at the Argentine Academy Awards where the film won him best director, screenplay – shared with Marcelo Müller – and best picture.

Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna Launch New Film-TV Company
In an anticipated move following their recent split from Canana, the shingle they co-founded with Pablo Cruz, Mexican multi-hyphenates Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna have launched a new film-tv company, La Corriente del Golfo (Gulfstream in English).

The new shingle aims to first serve as an independent production company for theatrical film and television projects and secondly, to develop a variety of community-oriented projects. Bernal and Luna are still collaborating on initiatives like Ambulante, a documentary film festival in Mexico that they co-founded 14 years ago.

“La Corriente del Golfo is an ocean current that originates in the Gulf of Mexico and travels all the way to the North Atlantic, allowing for a temperate climate – and, without which, there’d be Arctic tundra,” said Garcia Bernal, adding: “We take up the symbol of this global current to emphasize that liberty – in all its meanings –should flow as freely as an ocean current.

Longtime friends and business partners Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal have launched Mexican production house La Corriente del Golfo.

The Mexico City-based outfit will produce film, TV and theater projects. Up first for La Corriente del Golfo (The Gulf Stream) is the world premiere of Aqui en la Tierra, a crime drama co-created by Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) and produced with Fox Networks Group Latin America. Aqui en la Tierra (Here on Earth) is competing this week at the first edition of Canneseries, a new TV festival taking place alongside Cannes' MIPTV market.

Larrain Brothers Appoint Geoff Stier as CEO of Fabula in North America (Exclusive)

Fabula’s Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, producers of Academy Award winner “A Fantastic Woman,” have appointed seasoned former Paramount exec Geoff Stier as CEO of Fabula in North America.

Paramount Pictures Evp of production from 2009, where he developed and managed feature projects such as “True Grit” and “World War Z,” Stier will begin to head up Fabula in North America from the second week of April, still based out of Los Angeles where Chile’s Larraín brothers established a production company last year.

Fabula’s first full-on U.S. production, a remake of “A Fantastic Woman’s” director Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria” starring Julianne Moore and directed by Lelio himself, went into production late last year. Stier will report to the Larraín brothers.

Canana will continue to operate under co-founder Pablo Cruz and Arturo Sampson, both of whom will oversee the company's day-to-day.

A statement released Monday said Canana will begin a "new phase" and will continue producing, but the company declined to specify why Luna and Bernal are stepping down.

Festival re-launches Estonian competition with Baltic focus.

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival has added a new competition strand ahead of its 2018 edition.

Running November 16 – December 2 this year, the festival is re-launching its Estonian Film Competition as the Baltic Film Competition, expanding the programming area to accept submissions from the entire Baltic region (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia).

While in its previous guise the programme used the same jury as Black Nights’ First Feature Competition, this year a new international jury will judge the films in the Baltic Competition.

Festival reveals first events for 2018 edition.

UK documentary festival Sheffield Doc/Fest has unveiled the Live Cinema Summit, a two-day event it will host to discuss trends in live cinema.

As part of the festival’s 25th edition, the summit (June 8-9) will include panel sessions with international professionals in the live cinema field, live screenings with live performance and immersive elements, behind-the-scenes artist and producer talks reflecting on Doc/Fest film and alternative realities events, and workshops for participants of varying experience levels.

Canneseries, the international TV festival launching in Cannes this April (7-11), has revealed the ten series in its official competition selection.

The titles include Killing Eve created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and starring Sandra Oh and Fiona Shaw, and Aquí En La Terra, created by Gael García Bernal with Kyzza Terrazas and Jorge Dorantes.

The titles were selected by Canneseries artistic director Albin Lewi.

The festival was founded by David Lisnard, mayor of Cannes and presided by former French culture minister Fleur Pellerin. It will run alongside Miptv.

Canneseries Unveils Competition Lineup for Inaugural Edition
The Cannes Intl. Series Festival has unveiled its inaugural competition lineup, showcasing a wide range of 10 ambitious and anticipated new series, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Killing Eve,” Omri Givon’s “When Heroes Fly,” and “Here on Earth,” co-created by Gael García Bernal.

Killing Eve,” based on Luke Jennings’ Villanelle novellas, stars Sandra Oh as a security operative hunting for an assassin (Jodie Comer). The series was made for BBC America and is being sold by Sid Gentle Films and Endeavor Content.

Oscars 2018: Sufjan Stevens, Mary J. Blige Turn In Amazing Musical Performances

While many Oscars viewers were greatly anticipating who would win the coveted trophies, over here, we were excited for the musical performances. Okay, and we were excited about the awards too, but seriously, this year was a stacked list of performers that got us hyped.
