Film Review: ‘Down a Dark Hall’

Film Review: ‘Down a Dark Hall’
Written in 1974, prolific young-adult novelist Lois Duncan’s “Down a Dark Hall” intriguingly anticipated some of the tropes of latterday Ya fantasy-fiction blockbusters. Thus “Buried” director Rodrigo Cortés’ belated screen adaptation comes off — at least in narrative terms — as something a halfway point between “Harry Potter” and “Suspiria,” as “gifted” girls at a curious, sinister private school become increasingly susceptible to supernatural forces.

Lionsgate Premiere’s Stateside launch of this Spanish-u.S. coproduction (which has already opened in several other territories) doesn’t suggest great faith, as it’s only providing very limited theatrical exposure alongside a VOD release. Still, this is a decent modern Gothic thriller handled with sufficient style and a straight face by genre ace Cortés. His efforts, and strong performances by the young female leads, make for a movie that’s fairly strong meat by juvenile fantasy standards, if probably a tad wimpy for horror-fan tastes.

'Fantastic Beasts' actor Eddie Redmayne and 'Rogue One' star Felicity Jones take to the sky in the first photo from Amazon Studios' 'The Aeronauts.'

The movie reunites the duo following their collaboration on 'The Theory of Everything,' for which Jones received an Oscar nomination and Redmayne won the Academy Award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking.

The image has been released to mark the start of filming across the UK and in London on 'The Aeronauts.'

Set in 1862, the story follows wealthy young widow Amelia Wren (Jones) and ambitious scientist James Glaisher (Redmayne) as they mount a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history but wrestle with the fact that the chances of survival are slim.

The movie is directed by Tom Harper ("War & Peace," "Peaky Blinders") and is written by BAFTA winner Jack Thorne ("Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," 'Wonder').

Producer Todd Lieberman said the first image captures Redmayne and Jones 2,000 feet in the air. "A top priority for us on 'The Aeronauts' is authenticity. With that in mind, we intend to do as much balloon filming in the sky as the weather will allow. This image was taken after we launched Felicity and Eddie 2,000 feet in the air, performing their scripted scene, while a helicopter captured it all. We’re fortunate that Felicity and Eddie have the nerve to do these stunts themselves as it authenticates our entire approach."

The cast also includes Tom Courtenay, Anne Reid, Rebecca Front, Vincent Perez, Tim McInnery, Phoebe Fox, and Himesh Patel.

A release date has yet to be announced.

‘Buried’ Director Rodrigo Cortés Goes ‘Down a Dark Hall’ in First Trailer

After a six-year hiatus from feature length filmmaking, Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés is finally back with his latest fantasy horror picture Down a Dark Hall – also known by its alternate title Blackwood. Best known for his tense direction on the Ryan Reynolds-led Buried and the Sigourney Weaver-led Red Lights, Cortés is no stranger to the horror-thriller genre. In Dark Hall, Cortés throws a fantastical twist onto things as the film deals with the supernatural – spookily depicted in the first trailer for the film, which Lionsgate has now released.

Down a Dark Hall centers on a troublesome young adult named Kit Gordy who, after a brief altercation with the law, is sent to a mysterious disciplinary boarding school – “Welcome to Blackwood” the stern headmaster Madame Duret (played by Uma Thurman) announces in the trailer. The Other One review – a sisterly sitcom driven more by narrative than gags

Rebecca Front steals the show from a fine ensemble cast in a comedy about coming to terms with the results of a loved one’s infidelity

There is a lovely start to The Other One (BBC2). Well, it’s not lovely for Colin, or really a start for him, more like an end, the end. It’s his birthday; his wife and daughter are throwing him a surprise birthday party. Trouble is, the surprise party exposes the Big Lie that Colin has been harbouring. Not only is he cheating on his wife but he has a whole other family, a mistress and another daughter (also called Catherine Walcott, to avoid mix-ups). The shock of suddenly being so publicly found out is too much for poor Colin; he has a heart attack, and sadly dies. Surprise!

The end – of the show – is rather nice, too. Colin’s ashes are scattered, by his daughters,
