‘The Gatehouse’ VOD Review

Stars: Scarlett Rayner, Simeon Willis, Linal Haft, Paul Freeman, Melissa Knatchbull | Written and Directed by Martin Gooch

Jack, a single father (Simon Willis) looking to get way from the ghost of his dead wife, literally and figuratively, moves into a secluded gatehouse on the edge of a forest to work on a novel and maintain a relationship with his daughter. His daughter, 10-year-old Eternity, loves digging for treasure in the forest behind her house. In a coincidental turn of fate, Jack agrees to undertake a writing project about the ‘legend of the black flowers’ at the same time that Eternity discovers a mysterious object in the woods, and the forest wants it back.

The Gatehouse is a very simple premise brought down by a lack of restraint. Tropes abound. Take a drink every time you see a grieving single parent, mischievous child, creepy neighbor, drunken party girls, ghost, witches… you

Movie Review – The Gatehouse (2016)

The Gatehouse, 2016.

Directed by Martin Gooch.

Starring Scarlett Rayner, Simeon Willis, Linal Haft, Paul Freeman, Hannah Waddingham, Alix Wilton Regan, and Melissa Knatchbull.

Synopsis:

Precocious ten-year old Eternity (Scarlett Rayner) lives in a gatehouse at the edge of an ancient forest with her father (Simeon Willis). She likes to dig for buried treasure in the woods, but one day she digs up something she shouldn’t and the forest wants it back.

You wait for one genre film about unwitting victims being picked off in the woods, and you get forests worth of flicks all at once. Following on from Blair Witch, The Woods, and the film with which this shares the closest DNA, in idea if not execution, Corin Hardy’s The Hallows, we get this micro-budgeted tale of schlocky horror.

Martin Gooch’s The Gatehouse is a drinking game’s worth of horror tropes, thrown together as a tonally haphazard monster mash.

The true stories behind Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie

Luke Owen sits down to interview some of the people behind Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie to find the stories behind the film…

Part way through the filming of the first season of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, producers Haim Saban and Shuki Levy found themselves in a quandary. The show was pulling in huge ratings and the merchandise was flying off the shelves to the point where they’d made over $1 billion in their first year, but three of its stars felt they were being underpaid for what they were doing. Austin St. John (The Red Ranger), Walter Jones (The Black Ranger) and Thuy Trang (The Yellow Ranger) felt their non-union contracts for several movies and forty more episodes were unfair, and as a result left the show to be replaced with stock footage and stunt doubles while their characters left to attend the World Peace Conference. “I

Indiana Jones and the Future of the Franchise

Tony Black on Indiana Jones and the future of the franchise…

Ask almost anyone what they thought of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the 2008 long-gestated sequel known forever and a day simply as ‘Indy IV’, and you’ll probably get much the same answer. “Awful!” “Rotten!” “Should never have made it!” “Nuke the fridge???!” You get the drift. It’s about as popular a sequel as World War Two, the fourth in, to many, a near-perfect trilogy of adventure films that helped define their decade, and the childhoods of millions. Indeed many try and revise history to erase it from their minds, considering Last Crusade the last hurrah. Like it or not, however, Disney know Indy = money given the near $800 million the fourth movie made on just shy of a $200 million budget. Almost nobody liked it, yet almost everybody went to see it. Therefore, after Disney’s epic purchase of LucasFilm,

9 affable action movie villains

facebook

twitter

google+

Some bad guys just want to collect antiques, or sand down a nice coffee table. Presenting our pick of 9 affable action movie villains...

Villains come in all shapes and sizes, from the hulking and formidable, like Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, to the more lithe and cunning, like the maniacal Scorpio in Dirty Harry. The most memorable villains almost always have one thing in common, though: whether they're blessed with brains, brawn or both, they're intimidating and powerful in some way. They're a worthy foil for the hero (or heroine) of the piece.

So what happens when a villain comes across as, well, just plain nice? Sure, they may have the henchmen, the money, the gadgets and the guns. But some villains seem just too easy-going and friendly to be properly intimidating. This isn't to say the performances are bad; in some cases, they're scene-stealingly brilliant.

‘The Long Good Friday’ Blu-ray Review (Arrow Video)

Stars: Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren, P.H. Moriarty, Kevin McNally, Alan Ford, Dave King, Bryan Marshall, Derek Thompson, Eddie Constantine, Paul Freeman, Leo Dolan, Patti Love, Pierce Brosnan | Written by Barrie Keeffe | Directed by John Mackenzie

The gangster movie is a beast very like the gangs it is based on. Depending on the country of origin the crime organisations tend to have certain looks and style and a certain tradition that they cling to as their laws of how to do business. The modern gangster movies are definitely an example of this, but they also share one thing in common, they lend a lot from The Long Good Friday which gets the Arrow Video treatment with its new release on Blu-ray.

Harold (Bob Hoskins) is a British gangster with an eye to capitalism and being a successful business man. Seeing London as his empire he is taken aback at the incredulous
