The Scottish rock singer-songwriter best known by the stage name "Fish", Derek William Dick was the firstborn of Robert and Isabella Dick. His parents ran a garage and petrol station, where he worked as a pump attendant in his youth. He has a sister, Laura, three years his junior. He attended Kings Park Primary School and Dalkeith High School, in his childhood home town of Dalkeith, just outside Edinburgh. He left with grade A O-levels in History, Chemistry, English, Maths and Biology and grade B O-levels in German and English Literature.

In 1976, he started to work as forester. In 1980, he quit and started a musical career. He joined joined Marillion in 1981. After a year of intense gigging in the UK they got signed to EMI and released their debut album "Script for a Jester's Tear" in 1983. Their biggest hit singles were "Kayleigh" and "Lavender" in 1985 (from the number one album "Misplaced Childhood") and "Incommunicado" in 1987. Their other top 40 singles included "Garden Party", "Sugar Mice" and "Warm Wet Circles". In 1988, after touring their critically acclaimed fourth album "Clutching at Straws", he left the band to start a solo career .

In 1987, he married Tamara, a model from Berlin who he had met during the recording of the album "Misplaced Childhood" and who appears in the music video of "Kayleigh". Later she also appeared in the video of his solo single, "A Gentlemen's Excuse Me". They have a daughter, Tara Rowena Dick, born on January 1, 1991. In 2001, Fish and Tamara separated. His first acting job was in Zorro (1990). He continues to release albums and to tour. In March 2003, he was developing a script and making a new album.

Vocalist/poet Fish joined the neo-progressive rock band Marillion in 1981 and led the band through numerous successes (including the world-wide hit song "Kayleigh") before departing for a solo career in 1988. A dynamic personal presence, both off and on stage, Fish branched out into acting while still a member of Marillion. Fish has made several TV guest shots including Zorro (1990) and The Ghost of Faffner Hall (1989).

He auditioned for a part in Die Another Day (2002). He also missed out on parts in Highlander (1986) and Braveheart (1995) because of his touring commitments.

Marillion, with Fish at the helm, twice made history on the BBC Top of the Pops (1964) programme. Firstly, the top ten countdown was uniquely stopped to introduce the band's performance of "Kayleigh" and when he came to perform "Lavender" he dressed in a drummer boy's jacket (a reference to the front sleeve of the "Misplaced Childhood" album) and wrote the lyrics of the song on a giant paper pad for the audience to sing along.
Fish wrote the lyrics to the song "Kayleigh" about his former girlfriend, Kay, although some of the lyrics refer to what happened in other relationships.
His bandmates in Marillion were guitarist Steve Rothery, keyboardist Mark Kelly, bass guitarist Pete Trewavas, and drummers Mick Pointer (who was fired following their first album) and Ian Mosley.
He has performed with the SAS (Spike Edney's All Stars) Band.
He joined the Scottish National Party in 1989. Always openly political, one of Fish's first solo singles, "Big Wedge", was a criticism of American capitalism. He stated prior to the Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014 that he was still a believer in independence because he did not believe a London-based government was beneficial to the UK as a whole, he was dismayed by the UK's anti-European stance and he wanted to see a more fair distribution of wealth throughout the UK.
He is a member of the Anti Nazi League and wrote the song "White Russian" (from Marillion's "Clutching at Straws" album) as a condemnation of the growth of anti-Semitism he encountered in Austria during a tour with the band in 1986.
On his 1993 album "Songs From The Mirror", he covered songs by The Moody Blues, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Pink Floyd, The Kinks, Aster Argent, Sandy Denny, Genesis, T. Rex and David Bowie, all favourite artists from his youth.
The physical abuse of women is a recurring theme in his songwriting, with examples such as "Punch and Judy" (from Marillion's 1984 album "Fugazi"), "Lady Nina" (the B-side of "Kayleigh"), "Blue Angel" (from Marillion's 1985 album "Misplaced Childhood") and "Family Business" (from his first solo album, "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors").
In March 2003, Marillion's 1985 album "Misplaced Childhood" came fourth in Classic Rock Magazine's list of the 30 greatest concept albums of all time.
His band Marillion were voted the Best New Band of 1982 by readers of rock magazine Sounds. He also appeared on the cover of several issues of Kerrang! magazine in the 1980s.
He claimed his dream backing would be John Martyn on lead guitar, Lowell George on rhythm guitar, Jon Lord on keyboards, Phil Collins on drums and Chris Squire on bass.
He met singer Heather Findlay in December 2005 and they became engaged to be married. However, the wedding was cancelled in May 2007, ten weeks before it was due to happen.

'Kayleigh' was a way of saying sorry. I had a lot of relationships that basically I'd wrecked because I was obsessed with the career and where I wanted to go. By 1987 we were over-playing live because the manager was on 20 per cent of the gross. He was making a fantastic amount of money while we were working our asses off. That was when I knew that, if I stayed with the band, I'd probably end up a raging alcoholic and be found overdosed and dying in a big house in Oxford with Irish wolfhounds at the bottom of my bed.
In all honesty, I am 50 years old, I smoke, drink, have a 'colourful' history, have sung at nearly 1,700 gigs over 27 years and have conducted three times as many interviews. It's like standing on the M1 and expecting not to be hit by a car.

Making an album is the easiest part. The difficulty is getting your music heard and promoting your material into the wider world. And that's more difficult and more expensive than ever. Having a Facebook/ Myspace/ web site doesn't mean everyone visits it! You still have to promote it in the big world.
The thing with demo tapes and the continual experience in studios and examining your writing is that the crap would be filtered out and through advice, criticism and self examination you could maybe create a piece of gold. Now you just buy a few hundred pounds worth of computer software, get a few of your musician mates around and hey presto! you have an album to press!
It is so easy to make music and albums these days and there are far too many that should never be made. There are too many bands and musicians that forget to switch on the bullshit filters in the studio. It's resulted in a lot of substandard and mediocre albums all vying for attention and saturating the market and making it more difficult for people to discover the gems.
As much as I like Peter's (Peter Gabriel) work and having met him a few times over the years the idea of a collaboration wouldn't work. Personality wise we are very different and I think I may be too "loud" for him! He prefers to work with more "left field" performers and having experienced working with Peter Hammill on his "House of Usher" project in the early stages, having two vocals that sound "similar" doesn't work as well as you may think. Saying that I don't really think we are that similar these days. Perhaps in the early 80's but not now. Hairstyles yes! Vocally no!
I left the band after 7 years and 4 great studio albums with no regrets and a sense of pride and accomplishment.
[speaking in 1984] We're not really a fashion band. We're not a chart band, we're very much an albums band, and I think because you could say the style that Marillion play transcends a lot of different types of styles, it upsets people because they can't categorise us.
'Incubus' is probably my all time favourite from my seven years with the band.

I took her to see Queen when she was about 16, we were sat around a table with Brian May and Roger Taylor and she wasn't fazed at all. In fact they were fascinated by her and she is going to the Guns N' Roses concert backstage and I haven't even been asked.
I was wary of being drawn to someone in the industry. But I've been in the situation before where I've gone out with people not involved in music and they've not understood my career.
The business has changed so much and I would hate to be in a young band trying to start out now. The demand to compromise is very high.
It will come as no surprise to fans of my music, and to most people who know me, that I have been an advocate for independence for a very long time and as such my views have not changed in recent months. I have listened to the debates and arguments with interest and an open mind and have considered both sides of the equations on offer. I personally believe that Scotland as a nation can make it on its own, although I do not envisage it being an easy ride in the formative years.
With a real name of Derek William Dick, it became very necessary to find a nickname as quickly as possible.
[on Scottish independence] I've got my own personal feelings on it but I live up here and I've lived up here since 1988, so sometimes I'll object a little bit to some of the celebrities that are going all out, "Better Together" - it's like, "You don't live up here". Having Mick Jagger and David Bowie turn round and say "Oh it's better together", I don't even think they pay the majority of their taxes in this country.
I've got a lot of socialist trends, but I work in a capitalist industry.
I think Paul Weller's as much influenced by Pete Townshend as we're influenced by Genesis.
I love "Misplaced Childhood" because it brought us success, but the album also signaled the end of the band as it brought a lot of collisions and conflict. We were playing in the Premier League and we were finding it hard keeping it together.
