Film Review: ‘Beyond Skyline’

Film Review: ‘Beyond Skyline’
A semi-sequel to 2010’s “Skyline” which follows different characters from the same alien-invasion starting point through fantasy perils on a grander scale, “Beyond Skyline” does its predecessor proud in that it, too, is fast-paced and colorful enough to rate as a solid guilty pleasure. This helming debut for Liam O’Donnell, who co-wrote the original, is another showcase for the FX work of the earlier films’ co-directors the Brothers Strause and their company Hydraulx (which has contributed visual effects to numerous recent tentpoles).

All three dudes were centrally involved with 2007’s “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.” If this new movie also seems to have a whole lot of Aliens and Predators running around, well, it’s not the kind of joint you expect originality from, in narrative or even stylistic terms. It is, however, a goofy hybrid that’s never dull and sometimes flat-out ridiculous, never taking itself so seriously for its logical shortcomings to feel truly embarrassing

The Quad Salutes Lois Smith by Screening Her Career Highlights

Smith in “Marjorie Prime

Just days ago Lois Smith received this year’s Golden Key Award for Career Achievement at the Key West Film Festival. Now comes word that the industry vet will be honored at New York City’s Quad Cinema. Four of her career highlights will be screened: “East of Eden,” “Five Easy Pieces,” “Foxes,” and “Marjorie Prime.” Released earlier this year, the latter sees Smith playing a former violinist in the middle stages of dementia. She maintains a close relationship with her late husband who exists in the form of a holographic projection (Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”). Smith received excellent reviews for the sci-fi flick.

“Enjoying her seventh decade onscreen, actress par excellence Lois Smith was recently on view at the Quad recreating her stage triumph with her beautiful multifaceted performance in ‘Marjorie Prime’ — and now she’s back in theaters with ‘Lady Bird,’” an announcement from The Quad reads.

Exclusive Photo: Antonio Fargas, Portrayed Huggy Bear on ‘Starsky and Hutch’

Chicago – The coolest cat on 1970s TV was Huggy Bear, informant to the cop team of “Starsky and Hutch.” The man who portrayed that fly guy was Antonio Fargas, who also could lay claim as the Godfather of Blaxploitation Films (the run of African American cinema in the late 1960s through the ‘70s). Fargas was honored for his contributions with the Career Achievement Award at the Cinepocalypse Film Festival, Music Box Theatre in Chicago.

12 Movies Daily Dead is Excited to See at Chicago’s Cinepocalypse 2017 Film Festival

  • DailyDead
Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.

For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

'War on Everyone' Review: Buddy-Cop Comedy Gets High on Retro Bad-Boy Supply
Remember the Nineties? Specifically, that decade's subgenre of films that proliferated during the A.T. (After Tarantino) era, the ones featuring retro-hip musical deep cuts and gallows-humor dialogue dotting horrific gunfights? Usually the antiheroes were criminals; in the case of writer-director John Michael McDonagh's tart-tongued throwback, they're police officers. And from the moment that Terry (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bob (Michael Peña) show up, chasing down a street performer – "Always wondered if you hit a mime, does he make a sound?" – you realize you've entered some sort of Lethal Weapon through the looking glass.
