The Radical Kindness of ‘Steven Universe’

The title character of Steven Universe is an adolescent boy who, over the course of the Cartoon Network series’ first five seasons, developed the ability to fly, to conjure an impenetrable pink shield out of thin air, to use his saliva to heal injuries short of death (and sometimes beyond), to merge his body with a friend’s (in an act called fusion) so they can become even stronger as one than they are side-by-side, and more. But his greatest power — and the reason the show became so adored that a follow-up film,

Spirited Away – The Blu Review

“Once you do something, you never forget. Even if you can’t remember.“

A beloved film from the brilliant Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki delivers truly amazing video and audio in this exceptional Blu-ray release.

People call Hiyao Miyazaki the Japanese Disney and Spirited Away from 2001 is considered one of his very best, if not his masterpiece. The film starts like a fairly typical take on Alice in Wonderland or Narnia. A girl is bought into a fantasy world and has to find her way back. But Miyazaki takes it even further. His heroine, ten year old Chihiro is a typically modern girl, upset about moving into a new home and afraid of new changes in her life. But after her parents take a detour into a strange tunnel she finds herself trapped and worst of all, her parents have been turned into pigs.

Miyazaki’s fantasy vision is quite simply jaw dropping.

‘Steven Universe S02E05: Story for Steven’ Review

  • Nerdly
“You’re awfully cute, and I really want to play with you…but your life is short, and you have dreams.”

Rose Quartz is the structuring absence of Steven Universe. She’s the ducks flying north from Tony Soprano’s pool, the vacated desk of Laura Palmer, the hole around which the themes and characters of the series revolve and against which they react. So why does she have so little to do in what is, essentially, her introduction? “Story for Steven” is often touching and intermittently energetic, but only occasionally is it interesting.

Like Laura Palmer, Rose is gone before the cameras roll but kept alive through the people whose lives she touched and the traces of herself she left behind in the world. Unlike Laura Palmer, always a human figure for good and ill, she’s been largely symbolic and idealized throughout her posthumous appearances. The best parts

Theater Review: Can Emma Stone Do Cabaret?

Theater Review: Can Emma Stone Do Cabaret?
Some 17 Sally Bowleses painted their nails green and sang “Maybe This Time” for the Sam Mendes revisal of Cabaret that ran on Broadway from March 1998 (Natasha Richardson) through January 2004 (Susan Egan). No doubt the Roundabout, which mounted that revisal, as well as the current revival of the revisal, hopes to keep the Kit Kat Klub door revolving. They started this spring with Michelle Williams, who was thrillingly emotional in the part, and have now moved on to Emma Stone, who reportedly had been their first choice. Even aside from Stone’s commercial appeal, you can see why: With her extraordinary face and Mona Lisa smile, her huge celadon eyes and coppery bob, she arrives prepackaged with the kind of remote fascination a Sally Bowles needs. And indeed, she looks terrific as the none-too-bright young thing in William Ivey Long’s pastel frocks and diaphanous lingerie. What fun! you think as

Disney 53: Hercules

I’d like to dedicate this one to my sister Elanor, who’s turning 21 today. I love you, kid.

Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements

117/ 93 Minutes

After the grim and serious Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Disney lightened the tone considerably with Hercules. Of course, technically it should be Heracles, since Hercules was the roman name, but that’s just one in a long long list of changes Disney made to the Greek myths. There are probably entire websites dedicated to the “mistakes” made by the filmmakers, but hey, artistic licence.

Reuniting the directors of The Great Mouse Detective (1986), The Little Mermaid (1989) and Aladdin (1992), Hercules is one part buddy-movie, one part coming-of-age story, and one large part Rocky-with-sandals, but first and foremost it’s a light-hearted screwball romp with a couple of life lessons thrown in. Production started in late 1994, with character designs based on classical Greek statues, with help
