Democrat U.S. senator from Missouri, 28 December 1968-3 January 1987. Incumbent senator Edward V. Long lost the 1968 primary election to Eagleton; when Eagleton was elected to the seat in November, Long resigned 27 December 1968 and Eagleton was appointed to fill the unexpired term through 3 January 1969.
