‘Midnight, Texas’ ‘Salvation’: Current State of 2017 Summer Broadcast Dramas

‘Midnight, Texas’ ‘Salvation’: Current State of 2017 Summer Broadcast Dramas
The summer TV season is in full swing, with this year’s broadcast drama slate looking to rebuild after last year.

This year will see a larger number of new broadcast dramas premiere with five, compared to just two last year. Most of the summer drama series that aired in 2016 will not return this summer. In fact, of the eight summer dramas that aired in 2016, only two returned for new seasons in 2017. Five were canceled, with “Wayward Pines” on Fox remaining in limbo.

Compared to last year, the number of new and returning broadcast summer dramas also dipped slightly to seven from last year’s eight. This is due in part to the fact that Fox has not officially canceled “Wayward Pines,” but did not air a third season of the series this year. Instead, Fox opted to focus solely on unscripted programming this summer with shows such as “Love Connection,” “Beat

The Weekend Warrior 1/27/17: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, A Dog’s Purpose, Gold

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

Movie Review – Leopard (2013)

Leopard, 2013.

Written and Directed by Eoin Macken.

Starring Eoin Macken, Tom Hopper, Rebecca Night, Jack Reynor, Liam Carney, and Helen Pearson.

Synopsis:

Returning home for his father’s funeral, Jack must face the brother he left behind. A woman they find on the moors complicates matters.

Death is a shaky subject in Leopard. It’s also a prevalent one, as this pressure cooker movie takes concrete facts, like dead is dead, and twists them into uncertainties that reflect the brokenness of brothers, Jack (Macken) and Tom (Hopper). Reunited by their father’s death, Jack hasn’t been around his small, Irish hometown in ages. No one seems to have missed him either. His family is at the center of multiple local mysteries but suspicions tend to fall short of direct accusation. Bartender, Rory (Reynor), tests those limits, by using the ample opportunities his job provides to makes indelicate passes at
