#ICastIt Michael Donovan's Killer Casting Search

“Carrie’s” journey to the historic Los Angeles Theatre downtown hasn’t been a direct one. Michael Donovan began casting the immersive musical production in July 2013 directed by Brady Schwind, but the project stalled. The creative team found a new venue in La Mirada and mounted the project there before bringing the current incarnation to downtown L.A. Emily Lopez also took an indirect path to the role of Carrie; she barely made it to the audition for the original production. She didn’t have an appointment and realized she didn’t even have the money for the gas to get her to the open call. When she called her mother in tears, her mom gave her the ten dollars for gas allowing Lopez to audition. “I was so excited because I’ve never ever gotten a callback from an open call in my life, so I had won the lottery,

'SNL' Accused of Plagiarizing Muhammad Sketch

Saturday Night Live has stirred controversy, and an accusation of of copyright infringement, over a comedy skit about Prophet Muhammad that starred Reese Witherspoon and Bobby Moynihan and aired this weekend. The NBC sketch comedy show allegedly ripped off the punchline for its Picture Perfect skit from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, a Canadian sketch comedy show from indie producer Dhx Media that aired its own Prophet Muhammad game show skit in January. "While imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, Dhx Media Ltd. takes infringement of its intellectual property very seriously," Dhx Media executive chairman Michael Donovan

L.A. Theater Productions Await Equity Vote on 99-Seat Plan

Los Angeles theaters are holding back announcing spring productions until they know the outcome of the Actors’ Equity Association referendum on the 99-Seat Theatre Plan. “We’re all holding our breath waiting to see what happens with the 99-seat world,” said Michael Donovan, a casting director who has worked extensively in L.A. theater. “Everything is a bit on hold right now.” L.A. County Equity members are set to vote beginning this week on a plan that would have actors paid minimum wage, which stands at $9, but a campaign is underway to raise it to more than $15. A final decision is expected next month. The economic uncertainty isn’t stopping some shows from going on. Donovan recently cast “Corktown ’57,” a world premiere drama that opens at the Odyssey Theatre March 28. The play, which is set in Philadelphia’s Irish-American community in the 1950s, centers on a family patriarch as

BBC One halts Shannon Matthews drama over 'production and editorial' matters

BBC One has halted work on its new drama based on the Shannon Matthews kidnapping.

The broadcaster has been working on the story, as revealed by Jeff Pope of ITV Studios' drama unit at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in August. Sheridan Smith was reported to be playing Shannon's mother Karen.

The Sunday People had claimed that work on the project had been suspended because of fears it could affect negotiations over the license fee in 2016, when the drama was due to air.

However, a BBC spokeswoman has said it is "misleading" to state that work has been paused for anything other than editorial reasons.

"Whilst we remain committed to this project, we have decided to pause in order to progress some important production and editorial matters," said a representative for the corporation.

Shannon Matthews disappeared for 24 days in Yorkshire in 2008, before it emerged her mother Karen had arranged

L.A. Theaters Want ‘Triple Threat’ Actors for Musicals

Los Angeles theater actors in search of paid work and awards should discover their love of musicals. When the Ovation Awards nominees were announced Monday, La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts had 17 nods and 3-D Theatricals had 13. Both L.A.-area theaters specialize in musicals and received the largest swath of nods for their productions of "Floyd Collins" (9) and "The Producers" (7) respectively. “Musicals are still in vogue,” Michael Donovan, a veteran L.A. theater casting director, told Backstage. Donovan said many theaters in the Southland have started developing their own productions in addition to producing established Broadway shows. "There’s tremendous interest in new shows," he said, noting actors can often get involved in the workshopping of these new works. “These are things that are great to do for actors. They push you as a performer,” he said. “The actors get paid $100 and there is no guarantee that you will go further,

Is the New Wallis Annenberg Performing Arts Center Snubbing L.A. Casting Directors?

Not everyone is celebrating the opening of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. The venue, which encompasses the 1933 Beverly Hills Post Office and the new 500-seat Bram Goldsmith Theater, held a gala opening last week that drew a Hollywood crowd featuring high-profile actors ranging from Sidney Poitier to Jodie Foster to Jason Bateman. Now, some Los Angeles–based casting directors are calling for talent to boycott the Wallis. Their gripe with the $70-million performance hall: It’s casting out of New York. For the only production it’s casting this season, the Miklos Laszlo play “Parfumerie” that’s set to run from Nov. 26 to Dec. 22, the center used New York–based casting director Alexander Fraser. “Parfumerie” will feature Los Angeles–based actors in the cast, but the city’s casting directors are fuming over the perceived snub. “Beyond the immediate disappointment, I think there should be a protest,

L.A. Actors Should Take Advantage of Open Calls

Local casting directors say there’s an easy way for Los Angeles actors to land theater roles this summer: Just attend an open Equity casting call. “The Equity open calls are poorly attended in Los Angeles—shockingly so,” Michael Donovan, a casting director who works with several Los Angeles–area theaters, told Backstage. Donovan recalled a recent four-hour open call that brought in around 24 Equity members for 72 slots. “There was the opportunity to see almost 50 non-Equity people,” he said. “Even if you’re a non-Equity performer, I urge actors to go. The Equity representative will start a non-Equity list and we filter people in if there’s nobody there from Equity. And a lot of times there’s nobody there.” Cheryl Rizzo, the production manager at Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena, said the tradition of open calls has been kept up despite the poor attendance. “We’ve always
