Red Sonja Remake Revs Back Up with X-Men: First Class Writer

Millennium Films is making another push to bring a new Red Sonja movie to the big screen, nearly a decade after it first started developing the remake. The production company has enlisted Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class) to write the screenplay, although no director is attached at this time. Millennium Films' Avi Lerner is putting this on the fast track to production, after the massive success of Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman, which over performed at the box office last summer taking in $412.5 million domestic and $821.8 million worldwide. Here's what Miller had to say in a statement about coming aboard to write Red Sonja.

"It's an exciting opportunity to faithfully adapt the amazing Hyborean world Robert E. Howard created, and inject it with Sonja's intelligence, ferocity, and fearless humanity. I want people to love Sonja the way I love her, and walk out of the theater understanding why she's so popular and enduring.

The Beverly Hills-based company is backed by private equity, in partnership with Jeanette Zhou of Jaguar Entertainment, and aims to handle an annual roster of four to five big-budget, theatrical films across all genres.

While Mercuri said he was not ready to announce any tiles yet, this will be music to the ears of buyers who fear the impact of disruptors like Netflix and, to a lesser extent, Amazon Studios.

“I’m a traditionalist,” Mercuri told Screen. “There’s a place for cinema and that’s the focus of this company – to make films that have value in the theatrical window and of course bring value on ancillary platforms.”

The executive has also struck a three-year deal to

Metropolitan FilmExport at 25: Hadida Brothers Build France Distributor Into Major Indie Player

Metropolitan Filmexport, France’s independent distribution leader owned by brothers Samuel and Victor Hadida, has not just survived; it has steadfastly thrived for the past 35 years.

Thanks to the Hadida brothers’ deep-rooted ties to Hollywood’s power players, passion for movies and guts, they’ve been able to stay on top in spite of the downfall of U.S. studios’ specialty divisions, rampant piracy and intense competition on the French distribution front.

The Hadidas have shaped the taste of French audiences — they were the first distributor in Gaul to import cult Hollywood movies like Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs,” David Fincher’s “Seven” and martial-arts pics with Jean-Claude Van Damme in the 1990s.

“We brought a new kind of film to France and created the Metropolitan generation, one that grew up watching American movies that were both director-driven and entertaining, like the Tarantino movies,” Victor says.

The Hadidas complement each

Judge dismisses Lovelace suit

Judge dismisses Lovelace suit
A New York federal Judge ruled in favour of Lovelace filmmakers and distributor RADiUS-twc.

Judge Thomas Griesa rejected a $10m claim filed on Monday by Arrow Productions that sought to block the film’s Aug 9 release on the basis that Lovelace contains more than five minutes of footage from Arrow’s seminal 1972 release Deep Throat that was used without permission.

The plaintiff had also sought judgment for use of the title Lovelace, which they claim was borrowed from their trademarked name Linda Lovelace without licence or permission.

However the Us District Court judge dismissed the plaintiff’s claims, finding in favour of Millennium Films, Nu Image, Animus Films, Untitled Entertainment, Eclectic Pictures, Avi Lerner, Laura Rister and RADiUS-twc.

“We are relieved that common sense prevailed,” said Millennium Films president Mark Gill. “The suit was completely unwarranted. We believe this case was an insult to the legal safeguards in place maintaining our right to freedom of speech. It was

Will Red Granite Save ‘Dumb And Dumber To’ With Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Farrellys?

Will Red Granite Save ‘Dumb And Dumber To’ With Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Farrellys?
The news that Warner Bros exited Dumb And Dumber To is hardly surprising. The studio has hovered over this sequel package like a wet blanket since January, unable to decide what it wanted to do with the property that originated through its production label New Line. Warners execs have hemmed and hawed over whether to let someone else finance while they distributed, or let it go completely. That apathy finally led to Warner Bros bailing a few days ago. At Cannes, the project was being discussed a lot, and I’m told that Wolf Of Wall Street financier Red Granite is in first position to finance the film and sell foreign. That company launched in Cannes with a Kanye West concert and fireworks on the beach a couple of years ago with a solid sales team headed by Danny Dimbort. But everybody’s waiting for them to start committing to
