‘The Conjuring 2′ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Madison Wolfe, Frances O’Connor, Lauren Esposito, Benjamin Haigh, Patrick McAuley, Simon McBurney, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Simon Delaney, Franka Potente, Bob Adrian | Written by Carey Hayes, Chad Hayes, James Wan, David Leslie Johnson | Directed by James Wan

The term “master of horror” is one that gets thrown around a little too loosely sometimes, but there are a precious few filmmakers who very much embody that prestigious label. If he didn’t achieve that status prior to 2013, James Wan sure did with the release of The Conjuring. The film, touted by many as Wan’s masterpiece, was indeed quite masterful, and with it the Aussie filmmaker brilliantly set the stage for a franchise built around the case files of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

In the wake of spinoff film Annabelle, the Warrens are back.

James Wan himself introduces this epic prank in the video which debuted on Programa Silvio Santos' YouTube, where he reveals that the Brazilian people's love of "Pegadinhas" (translated to English as "gotchas") helped inspire this prank, which uses actual scenes from the horror sequel in a terrifying real-life setting. Lorraine and Ed Warren travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.

Prior to the screening of The Conjuring 2, director James Wan declared his love of the great Hammer Horrors of the 40s/50s. If only he had the know-all to transfer this adoration to the creepy, if wholly unremarkable and quite extraordinarily unoriginal horror sequel. It’s predecessor, 2013s The Conjuring – although in and among the landfill horror churned out with factory made precision had the façade of remarkability-borrowed freely from everything from The Amityville Horror, to set pieces seemingly taken without care from The Exorcist. It’s sequel, if slightly superior,
