Monster-Movie Mayhem: ‘Jabberwock’ Review

Stars: Michael Worth, Tahmoh Penikett, Kacy Barnfield, Raffaello Degruttola, Steven Waddington | Written by Raul Inglis, Rafael Jordan | Directed by Steven R. Monroe

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves, did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe. Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun, the frumious Bandersnatch!

Taking the classic nonsense Lewis Carrol poem Jabberwocky as its inspiration (the poem is referred to in the film as a song recited to children to frighten them) Jabberwock (orJabberwock: Dragon Siege to give the film its full title) is yet another in the line of low-budget dragon movies to be released straight to DVD in the UK (other dragon-based titles include Age of the Dragons, Dawn of the Dragon Slayer, Dragon Dynasty, Dragon Crusaders, and so on and so forth) and like

‘Guns For Hire’ Review

Stars: Ever Carradine, Michele Hicks, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Ben Mendelsohn, Tony Shalhoub, Sarah Shahi, Orlando Jones, Ivana Milicevic, Brooke Adams, Raffaello Degruttola, Jamie Donnelly, Cullen Douglas | Written and Directed by Donna Robinson

Beatle is a quirky loner who refuses to live by society’s rules. Her only human contact is with her psychiatrist and the stripper/hooker she employs once a week. Everything changes the night she meets Athena, a suicidal blonde with a secret.

Guns for Hire is one of those films where you are absolutely sure what is going on, right up until the big reveal at the end, where you suddenly realise you did not have a clue at all what was going on. The twist within a twist within a twist is done so well, I actually did not have a clue that it was coming and was too busy enjoying Guns for Hire for what it was.

‘Flim: The Movie’ Review

Stars: Raffaello Degruttola, Steven Waddington, Rebecca Atkinson, Jody Marriott Bar-Lev, Kacey Barnfield, Camille Coduri, Josh Cohen, Shelley Conn, Collette Cooper, Dan Davies, Skye Lucia Degruttola, Simone Lahbib, David Elliot, Sadie Frost, Christopher Fulford, Abhin Galeya | Written and Directed by Raffaello Degruttola

Flim The Movie is a very clever, very funny mockumentary. It was a surprise hit at Raindance Film Festival 2014 and despite a low budget and miniscule marketing spend found itself nominated for a British Independent Film Award alongside big hitters like Calvary and The Imitation Game. The story centres around a hapless, wannabe Bollywood director called Ravi (played by Raffaello Degruttola). He claims to have made at least one short film back in India and has come to the UK to make his first feature film. Capturing this is the Nick Broomfield-cum-Louis Theroux documentarian Scott (played by Steven Waddington).

As well as star in it, Degruttola produced and directed it.

Exclusive In-Depth Chat with C. Thomas Howell Regarding MoniKa and More!

As a young man, he assisted a cross-dressing alien in evading the feds in Spielberg’s 1982 smash-hit E.T. The Extraterrestrial and was told to “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” in Coppola’s 1983 drama The Outsiders. He made famous the battle-cry ‘Wolverines!’ in John Milius’ 1984 Cold War flick Red Dawn and as ‘Jim Halsey’ nearly ate a french-fried finger in director Robert Harmon’s 1986 horror classic The Hitcher. Years later, and with nearly 150 titles to his credit, C. Thomas Howell sat down with us to discuss with candor his varied career as well as his role in Steven R. Monroe’s upcoming feature MoniKa. Read on!

“It’s sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, that sort of thing,” the forty-four-year-old Howell told us of his role last June on the Big Picture Soundstage, Burbank, California, set of MoniKa (then titled Hole in the Desert), which is co-executive produced by lead actress Cerina Vincent

Jabberwock and Rallying Support: A Movie Review

*full disclosure: American World Pictures provided a screener of this film for review.

Director: Steven R. Monroe.

Writers: Raul Inglis and Rafael Jordan.

Cast: Tahmoh Penikett, Michael Worth and Kacey Barnfield.

SyFy Channel should consider rebranding. They do a better job with the fantasy films they choose than the science fiction and terror products combined. Jabberwock is a simple tongue-in-cheek tale that plays with Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem, but spells the monster’s name without the y.

Either there were copyright issues that the film's producers could not wrangle, or they were simply trying to be original. To loosely base the monster on the design by artist John Tenniel gives this film a continuity that is much appreciated. Not every detail, like the creature’s long antennae, canonical beard and broad buckteeth are recreated, but any avid arts aficionado will recognize the silhouette.

As for this made-for-tv product, the

First Images from Steven R. Monroe’s Jabberwocky

American World Pictures and Bron Studios have released the first images from Steven R. Monroe’s “Jabberwocky”, which just completed production and is now headed into post. Monroe is coming off the remake of “I Spit on Your Grave”, and previously directed the films “It Waits” and “House of 9″, both of which I found very decent. “Jabberwocky” looks like a swords-and-monsters fantasy movie, and co-stars Tahmoh Penikett (of “Battlestar Galactica” fame) and Kacey Barnfield (recently in “Resident Evil: Afterlife”). Jabberwocky chronicles the story of a young squire (Michael Worth) who, alongside his brother (Tahmoh Penikett), must become a warrior to save his people and the woman he loves (Kacey Barnfield) after a horrific beast is unleashed on the Kingdom. Starring Tahmoh Penikett, Michael Worth, Kacey Barnfield, Raffaello Degruttola, Steven Waddington, Richard Riddell, Ian Virgo, and directed by Steven R. Monroe. Look for it later this year.
