Sony Animation Goes Diverse with Miles Morales as Spider-Man and Lin-Manuel Miranda Musical ‘Vivo’
Sony Pictures Animation, which has fallen on hard times in recent years, highlighted diversity and female empowerment as part of its comeback at Wednesday’s slate preview in Culver City. The biggest news was confirmation that Miles Morales, the mixed race web-slinging teen (African-American and Hispanic), will star in the untitled “Spider-Man” feature coming December 21, 2018.

Morales, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli to succeed the late Peter Parker in the comics, has already become a TV animation staple on Disney Xd’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors” (initially voiced by Donald Glover).

The animated “Spider-Man” marks a return to Spa for Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), who directed “The Lego Movie” and are currently making the “Han Solo” standalone “Star Wars” feature.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Brings Vivo To Sony Animation

There’s a reason why undeniably talented people like Lin-Manuel Miranda seem to suddenly burst into the social consciousness while being exceedingly prolific with the art they produce. It’s not that they unexpectedly hit the creative mother lode and quickly churn out a bunch of hits – it’s that one big success means that the projects studios have been turning down for years are suddenly very attractive, and potentially profitable. This is why Sony Animation has snapped up Vivo.

Vivo was happening at DreamWorks originally, but failed to find its feet there. Meanwhile, the actor, composer, playwright, rapper and writer delivered the music for the hit movie Moana, in addition to having created his wildly popular Broadway show, Hamilton – inspired by the biography of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, by Ron Chernow. These high profile successes mean that previously rejected projects are now finding themselves nestled in nurturing new homes.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Teams Up With Sony For Animated Musical Called Vivo

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is hot off his recent success with Disney's Moana. He's working on several projects with Disney at the moment including The Return of Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, and a secret untitled animation project.

Miranda is now teaming up with Sony Animation to develop an animated musical called Vivo. Sony doesn't really do musicals, but they are obviously looking to cash in on what makes Disney successful and also bring in the guy who is currently helping them with that.

The story follows "a monkey who loves music and adventure, leading him to make a dangerous journey from Havana to Miami to fulfill his destiny."

Miranda has become a pretty busy guy, but this is a project that it seems like he could have fun with. He will write several songs for the movie, which is being scripted by playwright and Previous Miranda collaborator Quiara Alegría Hudes.

The Croods 2 has been cancelled

Simon Brew Nov 14, 2016

DreamWorks Animation has called time on its plans to make The Croods 2...

Pretty soon after The Croods hit big for DreamWorks Animation back in 2013, the studio put the wheels in motion for a sequel. The first film, that had Nicolas Cage leading the voice cast, banked a not insignificant $587m around the world, and original directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco were quickly back on board to develop The Croods 2.

The movie had originally been set for release next year, but had recently been put back to 2018. And now DreamWorks, under the stewardship of its new owners Universal Pictures, has cancelled the project outright. This isn’t said to be to do with corporate ownership, however. DreamWorks had already identified problems, and Variety reports that Universal effectively ratified a decision that had already

The Croods 2 Is Dead At Dreamworks Animation

Last we’d heard about The Croods 2, DreamWorks Animation had brought in several new writers to re-work the script, and had nabbed Leslie Mann and Kat Dennings for supporting roles. Everything seemed set for the sequel to release in November of next year, until today that is, as Deadline is reporting that the studio has now pulled the plug on the project.

According to them, “things had been going south for a while,” and after DreamWorks Animation was sold to Comcast this year, the film wasn’t deemed a high enough priority for it to remain in development. That’s surprising, too, as The Croods mustered up an impressive $587 million at the worldwide box office and arrived with a star-studded cast that boasted names like Emma Stone, Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds.

Granted, reviews were somewhat mixed, but with a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, it certainly seems that most critics took to it alright,

The Croods 2 hits new delay

Simon Brew Aug 11, 2016

Universal's takeover of DreamWorks Animation has led to a delay for The Croods 2...

DreamWorks Animation has been working on a sequel to its huge hit, The Croods, for some years now. The original came out in 2013, and has been one of the few standout commercial successes for the studio of the last few years. So much so that directors Chris Sanders and Kirk De Micco soon were set up and running on a sequel, that would bring back the voice cast, including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds.

The Croods 2 had been earmarked for December 2017. However, a delay has hit the project, and it’s nothing to do with the film itself. Rather, it’s to do with the takeover of DreamWorks Animation by Universal.

As part and parcel of that, it’s expected that 20th Century Fox’s deal to distribute DreamWorks Animation

The Croods 2 Added Two Hilarious Actresses To Its Voice Cast

Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders' The Croods had a rather impressive voice cast full of stars - but the sequel is evidently going even bigger. How do we know? Because all of the lead cast members will be back, and this time around joined by Leslie Mann and Kat Dennings. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that the two very funny ladies will be joining the ensemble of The Croods 2. As things stand, the rest of the cast includes Nicolas Cage (as Grug), Emma Stone (as Eep), Ryan Reynolds (as Guy), Catherine Keener (as Ugga) and Clark Duke (as Thunk). Weirdly there still aren't any plot details available, but the trade does have word on the roles that Mann and Dennings will be playing. It seems that part of the plot of The Croods 2 will involve the titular family meeting another prehistoric clan, and competing in some fashion.

John Cleese interview: Clockwise, Muppets, writing, stand-up

Chatting about writing, The Muppets, DreamWorks, Clockwise and Charles Crichton, all with Mr John Cleese...

Now out in hardback is John Cleese's autobiography, So Anyway. It's a genuinely interesting read, very much written in his own voice, and he spared us some time to have a chat about it, and his career.

Here's how it went...

Can we start with the predictable stuff first, but I always wonder this when anyone writes an autobiography: why do it? Why put your life down in a book, who is it for, and did you enjoy it?

Well let's go backwards on that. Yes I enjoyed it very much. Who is it for me? In a funny kind of way it was for me, because some people seem to think that I've had a very interesting life, which compared with people who have fought in wars, and been spies, and discovered rivers in Africa,
