Have you ever considered how a movie becomes a bona fide cult classic? While many factors play a role, the phenomenon usually begins with a high-quality product that fails to resonate among the masses during its initial release due to ungraspable material ahead of its time, yet through its own undeniable merits, finds its passionate fanbase that grows over time and allows the film to become far more popular after the fact than it was in the present tense. In the case of David Cronenberg’s sci-fi body horror opus Videodrome, the film has overcome its notorious box-office failure to ascend as one of the most revered movies of Cronenberg’s illustrious career.

David Cronenberg’s 1981 sci-fi thriller Scanners (watch it Here) kicked off a franchise that consists of four follow-ups: Scanners II: The New Order, Scanners III: The Takeover, Scanner Cop, and Scanners: The Showdown (a.k.a. Scanner Cop II: The Showdown). The franchise has been dormant for twenty-seven years now, but not for lack of trying. For the last fifteen years, there has been talk of Scanners being revived by either a remake from the likes of Darren Lynn Bousman and David S. Goyer or a television series that at one time had Alexandre Aja attached. Now, after a long time in development hell, it looks like the TV series option is finally going to happen. Without the involvement of Bousman, Goyer, or Aja.

Scanners, the 1981 horror cult classic from David Cronenberg, is getting the HBO series treatment.
William Bridges, who won an Emmy for co-writing the “USS Callister” episode of Black Mirror, is acting as writer and showrunner for the series, which is in development, with Yann Demange, who helmed the pilot for HBO’s Lovecraft Country, directing. Both will exec produce.
This project will be a co-production between HBO, Media Res Studio and Wayward Films.
Scanners told of a small group of people with a range of psychic, telepathic and telekinetic powers. One faction of scanners, as these people were labeled, was led by a power-mad man named Revok, played by Michael Ironside, who aims to take over the world, while a private security firm recruits its own scanners to stop him for its own, possibly shady, reasons.

While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.
After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

The Weinstein Company-owned Dimension Films was the property’s previous owner for nearly a decade. The studio tried to adapt “Scanners” into a television series back in 2011 with Alexandre Aja (“The Hills Have Eyes”) signed on to executive produce and potentially direct the pilot. Dimension had plans to remake the property as a film before landing on a TV adaptation and even hired David Goyer to write the script. Neither the film or the series ever got made, but now the latter is being developed under a new studio.

The Brood
Written and directed by David Cronenberg
Canada, 1979
Inspired by his own unpleasant divorce, and the subsequent liberation of his daughter just before his ex-wife was able to take the girl to a California cult, David Cronenberg’s The Brood is essentially an ugly, highly unorthodox custody battle. As the great Canadian filmmaker famously quipped, “The Brood is my version of Kramer vs. Kramer [also released in 1979], but more realistic.”
The Brood is Cronenberg’s sixth feature, coming just after the seemingly out of place Fast Company (1979)—not so very odd given the director’s love for automobile racing—and just before his more exemplary breakthrough, Scanners (1981). It is consummate Cronenberg, with a heady mixture of clinically twisted science and the deep psychological strain that inevitably mars said science with corporeal disfigurement.

“Mommie’S Dearest”
By Raymond Benson
David Cronenberg’s horror films always seem to tackle subjects that involve an unpredictable human body and the terror of your consciousness residing inside of it. He explored parasites in his first mainstream picture, Shivers (aka They Came From Within, 1975), and viral “stingers” than grow in a woman’s armpit in his second, Rabid, 1977. The rest of his movies, leading up to the ultimate statement of being trapped in a horrible body, The Fly (1986), all dealt with some aspect of physical or mental transformation. While the name Travis Stevens may not be familiar to horror fans, the films he’s shepherded over the last several years should: A Horrible Way to Die, Little Deaths, The Aggression Scale, The Thompsons, Big Ass Spider!, Cheap Thrills, Jodorowsky’s Dune, Starry Eyes, and the upcoming feature, We Are Still Here, which debuted at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival.

We recently chatted with Stevens about his background, his approach to producing, the state of independent horror and the one thing he recommends to aspiring filmmakers.
Thanks for speaking with me, Travis. You have done such an amazing job throughout your career finding interesting and thought-provoking films to work on that also feel different from each other.

Scream Factory continues their winning streak of releasing horror film favorites with their double feature Blu-ray release of 1988’s Bad Dreams and 1982’s Visiting Hours. They originally released these films together on DVD in September 2011.
Bad Dreams opened on Friday, April 8, 1988 and is, in hindsight, eerily prescient of David Koresh, the leader of the Branch Davidian religious sect who met a horrific end when the FBI closed in on him and his compound ignited into a conflagration on April 19, 1993 in Waco, TX. Jim Jones and the Jonestown deaths in 1978 also come to mind. In this film, the late Richard Lynch plays a cult leader named Harris who convinces a group of people that love and unity are the only ways to live, and he shows that love by dousing them all in gasoline and lighting them on fire. Jennifer Rubin plays Cynthia, a confused and reluctant holdout...

We're big supporters of author, screenwriter, and artist Stephen Romano, mainly because not only is he uber-talented, but he's also just as sick as we are. God bless him! Read on for the first details on Resurrection Express as it heads toward the screen.
"I am happy to announce that I have officially sealed the deal with a pair of real Hollywood legends to bring my highly acclaimed novel Resurrection Express to the big screen," Romano tells us exclusively.
Romano continues, "I really love the book. It's one of my favorite things I've done so far. Simon and Schuster really took a chance on it because it's a batshit-crazy, ultra-violent thrill ride filed with over-the-top action, horrific torture, nonstop intrigue and crazy plot twists. Dimension Films is currently adapting David Cronenberg's science-fiction horror classic Scanners into TV series. According to Deadline, it will be a drama series that follows "a group of people with telepathic and telekinetic abilities," and that Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) is set to executive produce the series and direct the pilot episode.
Dimension purchased the rights to the franchise a few years ago, but was not involved in the original 1981 film or its sequels. Initially, the studio planned on developing a remake with David Goyer to write the script, and Rene Malo, Clark Peterson and Pierre David signed as producers. After the success of AMC's The Walking Dead, Dimension changed directions to a small screen version. Goyer is no longer involved in the project, which will be produced by Malo, Peterson and David remain attached as executive producers on the series. Dimension is currently looking for a showrunner.

PinD: Sandor SternDavid Hewlett, Cyndy Preston, Terry O'Quinn Low-budget Quebecois producer Pierre David has really come up with some gems over the years. Videodrome, The Brood, and Scanners were all produced under his banner. Then again, so was The Paperboy, so David is really hit-and-miss. Pin represents David at his finest. It's an eerie thriller that focuses more on psychological drama than hardcore suspense to generate its thrills.Leon and Ursula Linden are average, everyday kids with wholly abnormal parents. Former Fox and Disney studio chief Bill Mechanic delivered a gloomy forecast for the U.S. movie industry -- studios and indies -- in his keynote speech Tuesday at the Independent Film & Television Alliance Production Conference in Santa Monica.
"Hollywood in the broadest sense of the word is much like Detroit," said Mechanic, a producer and CEO of Pandemonium. "It's a manufacturer's mentality that reigns, seemingly indifferent to the consumers it serves."
Mechanic said that since shifting from being a studio boss to indie production, he has seen that "the independent world was no more concerned with the consumer than the studios."
He said that while attendance was declining and revenue growth was a function of inflation, the number of movies made jumped as a result of an influx of hedge-fund money creating a glut of product, "most of it with no idea of who it was for or how it could be sold.

Fango’s Australian correspondent Michael Helms sent along casting and other details on two new projects getting ready to roll there, both of which showcase nature gone amok. The more horrific of the two is The Reef, the latest from Andrew Traucki, who co-wrote and co-directed (with David Nerlich) the killer-crocodile flick Black Water.
Reteaming Traucki with Black Water producer Michael Robertson, The Reef stars Aussie actors Damian Walshe-Howling, Zoe Naylor, Gyton Grantley, Adrienne Pickering and Kieran Darcy-Smith in the story of a group of friends whose boat capsizes on a jaunt to the Great Barrier Reef. Deciding to attempt a swim to the distant shore, they find themselves being stalked by a great white shark intent on making meals out of them. The $3.5 million (Australian) film is set to begin a five-week shoot October 12 in Queensland’s Hervey Bay; additional live shark footage will be captured in South Australia.
