Exclusive: Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and more discuss Netflix feature Outlaw King

  • HeyUGuys
To celebrate the release of new Netflix feature film Outlaw King – which chronicles the legendary warrior Robert the Bruce, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the leading castmembers Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Billy Howle and Tony Curran – as well as director David Mackenzie – to discuss this historical epic.

We spoke about the challenges in riding horses and wielding a sword at the same time (not an easy skill), why making this film tapped into childlike qualities of the cast, and the importance in telling such a rich film steeped in Scottish folklore and history. Director Mackenzie also explains why he cut a lengthy chunk out of the film which initially premiered at Toronto, and we get on to the subject of, well, the subject of Chris Pine’s now infamous nude scene.

‘Outlaw King’ Film Review: Chris Pine Scottish War Epic Is Meh-dieval

‘Outlaw King’ Film Review: Chris Pine Scottish War Epic Is Meh-dieval
For those of you wondering why “Braveheart” was only three hours, when the wars of Scottish independence lasted decades, there’s now two more hours of it in the form of “Outlaw King.”

Taking place in the space between William Wallace’s insurgency and the “Braveheart” coda, “Hell or High Water” director David Mackenzie’s ruddy, muddy, bloody 14th-century chronicle of the successfully rebellious campaign Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine) waged against English king Edward I (Stephen Dillane) isn’t likely to replace Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning warrior cry in the pantheon of medieval war epics. Sometimes, getting there first with overlooked, then heightened, battle history has pop culture advantages.

But as Netflix-and-kill offerings go, “Outlaw King” is a respectably engaging slice of freedom-fighting bluster, if ultimately suffering from the same need to bleed that weighs down most warfare sagas these days. Mackenzie shaved 20 minutes or so after its

Outlaw King plays like a direct to home video Braveheart sequel that was lost in space and time and unearthed by Netflix. That’s not to say it’s necessarily bad, but this project re-teaming filmmaker David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) and Chris Pine for medieval heroics and all-out bloodbath warfare for the untold but

‘Outlaw King’ Trailer: David Mackenzie’s War Drama Is 20 Minutes Shorter, but He Still Thinks It’s an Epic — Watch

  • Indiewire
Having been trimmed by some 20 minutes following a muted response at Tiff, “Outlaw King” has been given a new trailer. David Mackenzie’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated “Hell or High Water” is “still very much an epic” in its truncated form, according to the director himself. The evolution from a 137-minute runtime to just under two hours apparently didn’t change the substance of his period piece starring Chris Pine. Watch the new trailer below.

“I could feel what the audience was like in the theater,” Mackenzie told Deadline of his decision to return to the editing room. “I’m sensitive to the way they felt.” Pine (who also starred in “Hell or High Water”) stars as King Robert the Bruce, successor to William “Braveheart” Wallace, who led the First War of Scottish Independence at the end of the 13th century. Outlaw King Review

  • HeyUGuys
David Mackenzie’s Outlaw King tells the story of Robert the Bruce, a Scot who led the rebellion against the ruling English. Chris Pine takes on the role, with support from the marvellous Florence Pugh as his wife and the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Tony Curran as his brothers in arms.

The story begins with Robert and a group of other Scottish lords begrudgingly pledging their allegiance to the English King, their rebellion having failed to really get off the ground. However, when William Wallace is killed, his death sparks a fire in the Scottish people that was somehow lacking during the previous rebellion attempt. Robert decides that it’s now or never and begins another rebellion against the English because if he does nothing, the Scottish people will have nothing left.

As his followers crown him the new Scottish King, the English start to up their attacks by way of retaliation.

2018 BFI London Film Festival Review – Outlaw King

Outlaw King, 2018.

Directed by David Mackenzie.

Starring Chris Pine, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Stephen Dillane, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, James Cosmo, Sam Spruell, Tony Curran, Callan Mulvey and Duncan Lacroix.

Synopsis:

A true David v Goliath story of how the great 14th Century Scottish ‘Outlaw King’ Robert The Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat and repel the much larger and better equipped occupying English army.

Something about Outlaw King’s trailer suggested that it could be an awful, pseudo-Brave Heart filled with battle cries and terrible ‘Scotch’ impersonations; perhaps long on battle scenes but awfully short on history. With David Mackenzie behind the driving wheel though, acclaimed director of Hell or High Water and a real-life Scottish person, we can all relax.

This Netflix production has a fresh, wry script – even from as early as the opening notes that set the scene in fourteenth-century Scotland. Throughout Outlaw King, the screenplay avoids
