The American Cinema Editors (Ace) has nominated “Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” in the category of feature film drama at the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards.
In the best edited comedic feature category, “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “Tick, Tick…Boom!” all received nominations.
Among the animated features nominated were “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.” The TV nominees include “Succession” and “The White Lotus.”

“Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” have been nominated as the best dramatic film editing of 2021 by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards on Thursday.
Those five films will compete in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, while the field in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) will consist of “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
The most surprising omission was probably “West Side Story,” while Ace Eddie voters also bypassed “Nightmare Alley,” “Coda” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Nominations for the editing of animated features went to the same five animated films that have also been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Visual Effects Society and Art Directors Guild: “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.

The idea of marrying the reality-tv staple “Ice Road Truckers” with the suspense classic “The Wages of Fear” — about long-haul drivers trying to get through treacherous mountain roads with a payload of nitroglycerin — isn’t a bad one in theory. In practice, however, “The Ice Road” is so often inept and heavy-handed that not even the reliable presence of Liam Neeson can rescue it.
Neeson has become a genre unto himself in recent years, starring in one movie after another about a regular guy (with a special set of skills) who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. (This latest is his second in 2021 alone.) But while the Irish actor reliably hits both his marks and the bad guys, he’s doing so in a film that’s leadenly predictable when it’s not unintentionally laugh-out-loud funny.
Some of those laughs come from the screenplay by director Jonathan Hensleigh (“Kill the Irishman”), which trots out chestnuts like,...

The Beach Bum is directed by independent auteur filmmaker Harmony Korine and his first feature film in a seven-year interval after his critically abolished but cult classic feature Spring Breakers, that gave the filmmaker a second wind of sorts after a decade of influence in the 90s with Kids, Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy. Sam Mendes’ “1917,” a gripping survival story that unfolds in the crucible of World War I, inserted itself into the awards race on Saturday with a series of well-received screenings in Los Angeles and New York.
The movie, which is made with great craft and care, now faces the unenviable task of trying to elbow into a crowded field of best picture contenders, one that already includes the likes of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
Many of these films have been on the festival circuit and these directors have subjected themselves to weeks of grip-and-grins with voters, giving them a head start. And yet “1917’s” epic sweep and undeniable artistry likely means that it has a strong chance of making the cut despite its 11th hour entry into the race. Director Sam Mendes will likely be...

Academy invitee Eddie Redmayne in 'The Theory of Everything.' Academy invites 322 new members: 'More diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before' The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures." According to the Academy's press release, "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2015." In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

The Nominations: Best Editing
“American Sniper” Joel Cox and Gary D. Roach
“Boyhood” Sandra Adair
“The Grand Budapest Hotel” Barney Pilling
“The Imitation Game” William Goldenberg
“Whiplash” Tom Cross
Shoulda Been a Contender: Douglas Crise and Stephen Mirrione for “Birdman”
Strangely left out of this category (yet, again, American Sniper somehow bested that…) Birdman’s editing team of Douglas Crise and Stephen Mirrione state that their “editorial ego really has to be held at bay pulled off” to achieve Iñárritu’s conceptual stunt. Yet, another way to interrupt the non nomination is that the ”one-take look” is indeed the most seamless edit of the 2014 year.
Should Win: Barney Pilling for “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Winner of Ace Eddie Awards’ in the Comedy or Musical category, Pilling is partially responsible for the magnificent pacing and filtering the performances of Anderson’s exquisite film. It would be great to see him take home the statue.

The 2015 BAFTA Awards have been revealed and if you're of the group that believes they hold any kind of influence over the Oscars or serve as any kind of predictor, well, you may be moving Boyhood back to the top line of your Best Picture and Director predictions as Richard Linklater's twelve-year project took home three wins including Best Picture, Director and Supporting Actress, though it was The Grand Budapest Hotel, which lead the nomination field with 11 noms, that lead all winners taking home five awards, all below the line outside of the win for Best Original Screenplay. Personally I'm not ready to move Birdman below Boyhood in either Picture or Director as it only took home one award, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, though one interesting category to keep an eye on is Best Actor at the Oscars as the precursors suggest it will be Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything...

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...

David Oyelowo was relaxed at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards held last night at the Hollywood Palladium. The whole world was surprised with his Oscar snub but the actor, who gave one of the best performances of 2014 as Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in "Selma," seemed to not mind. He remembered me from our red carpet interview when "Selma" opened the Palm Springs International Film Festival. As soon as Oyelowo saw me, he asked, "Palm Springs right?," so...we took a selfie!
That was always the mood at any of the Critics' Choice Movie Awards I've attended. Being a proud voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, we hand out the Critics' Choice Movie Awards annually and it's the awards show I always look forward to attending each year.
Common, who, together with John Legend won Best Original Song at the Critics' Choice with the fantastic "Glory" from "Selma" was also in high spirits.

Birdman was lauded with seven gongs at this year's Critics' Choice Movie Awards.
Lead actor Michael Keaton scored two of the awards for Actor and Actor in a Comedy, while the movie also won in the Acting Ensemble, Score, Original Screenplay, Editing and Cinematography categories.
However, the Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed black comedy was unable to beat Boyhood to the Picture award.
The coming-of-age drama had the second highest number of awards in total, which included Director for Richard Linklater, Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette and Young Actor/Actress for Ellar Coltrane.
The Grand Budapest Hotel followed suit with three awards for Comedy, Art Direction and Costume Design, while Guardians of the Galaxy took two with Action Movie and Hair & Make-up.

Birdman led the field heading into tonight's 2015 Critics Choice Awards with 13 total nominations followed by The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations, and Boyhood with eight. Of course, following this morning's 2015 Oscar nominations all eyes were on the Critics Choice Awards to see how this awards season will continue to flow. Some were already declaring the Oscars irrelevant, bypassed by the likes of the more diverse list of nominees at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards as the Oscars failed to nominate Selma and saw a list of acting nominees dominated by all-white actors. Personally, I think people are looking to blame the Academy for overall industry ills, but I guess there is some level of importance to be placed on being the organization to move the dial. Is that by nominations alonec How much do winners matterc That's probably a question best left for another time, as for tonight's awards.

Just as it made a strong showing in the Oscar nominations Thursday morning, “Birdman” was the front-runner with the most nominations for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Thursday night. It also ended the night with the most trophies, taking home seven, including both Best Actor and Best Actor in a Comedy for Michael Keaton, Best Acting Ensemble, and Best Editing — the film was shot to look as if it was a single continuous take.
“Boyhood” followed with four awards, including two of the biggest honors of the night: Best Picture and Best Director for Richard Linklater. The film’s star...

Awards season continued Thursday night with the 20th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. Live with Kelly and Michael's Michael Strahan hosted the show at the Hollywood Palladium, and kept the mood "light and easy," as promised (starting with a Magic Mike-inspired strip-tease to open the show). Birdman walked away with the most statues, and Kevin Costner, Ron Howard and Jessica Chastain received special awards during the ceremony. Birdman entered the race with the most nominations, 13, and took six of the categories. Not far behind was Boyhood, which took four of its eight nominated categories, and The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations and three wins.

Well, there we went. The Oscar nominations are in and, in a nice change of pace, the crafts categories were revealed on the air. Let's see what the last several months of build-up has left for us. A few trends come to mind… The (Near) Shut-Outs Oh how the mighty have fallen. A measly sound editing nomination for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" shows that the novelty eventually does wear off. Goose eggs for "Noah" (despite a strong push), "Nightcrawler" (given its precursor run), "Gone Girl" (you would have thought it had great chances in film editing and original score), "Transformers: Age of Extinction" (given the sound branch's love of this series) and "Big Eyes" (given the pedigree) have also got to be considered disappointing. And even though it garnered two nominations, I can't imagine that there aren't some long faces regarding "Guardians of the Galaxy," with...

Over the past three and a half months, we have previewed the races in all Oscar categories and spoken with many of the leading contenders. For the ninth year here at Tech Support, it's now time to put all of that aside and put forward final predictions. Which craftsmen and craftswomen will be cited by their peers on Thursday? Best Cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki looks in fantastic position to earn his second straight statuette for his very, very long takes on "Bidman." Robert Yeoman and Dick Pope have earned guild, Bfca and BAFTA nods for their gorgeous period work that blurred the line between camera work and the painted and crafted arts on "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Mr. Turner" respectively. The former will likely rack up a host of nods while this is a perfect chance to recognize Pope’s collaborations with Leigh. They’re in good shape. Roger Deakins missed a BAFTA nod,...

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) bestowed further glory on IFC Films’ coming-of-age drama on the day of Oscar nominations as the film collected best picture, director, supporting actress and young actor honours.
Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel, which led Thursday’s (January 15) Academy Awards nominations roster on nine apiece, also figured in the 20th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in Hollywood.
The former collected the most nominations of the night with seven, among them best actor for Michael Keaton, acting ensemble, original screenplay, cinematography, editing, score and actor in a comedy.
Keaton became the first person in the 20-year history of the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards to win three prizes in a single night for best actor, actor in a comedy and part of the Birdman ensemble.

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists (Awfj) has revealed the winners of the 2015 Eda Awards! Founder Jennifer Merin lovingly dedicated and named the Eda Awards after her mother, Eda Reiss Marin. Awwwww :happy

Tomorrow morning, January 15, the 2015 Oscar nominations will be announced and I'll be here to offer up the complete list and offer up my thoughts on the winners, losers, snubs and surprises, but before that time comes let's take one final look at each category and offer up our predictions. At the beginning of the year I had Angelina Jolie's Unbroken at the top of my Best Picture list and today that film doesn't even make my final list of predicted nominees. In fact, only two of my early year predictions -- Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel -- made my final list, perhaps, in that case, it's best suited they sit at #1 and #2. It's been an odd year given the fact the major contender for Best Picture is a small, $2.4 million budgeted feature from IFC Films. A project pieced together over the course of twelve years is looking to...

BAFTA, the British Oscars, has revealed the nominations for their annual awards and Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" led with 11 nominations including Best Picture where it will duke it out with "Birdman," "Boyhood," "The Imitation Game," and "The Theory of Everything" for the trophy.
But, Ava DuVernay's "Selma" and Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" were completely ignored!
Some surprising twists -- Steve Carell, noted as Best Actor for "Foxcatcher" has been relegated to the Best Supporting Actor category. And I'm happy to report that the British Academy voters gave love to "Nightcrawler" for Best Actor (Jake Gyllenhaal), Original Screenplay (Dan Gilroy), Editing (John Gilroy), and my "it's-about-time-they-honor-her" rant, Rene Russo for Best Supporting Actress!

It’s almost time for the British Academy Film Awards, and earlier today (January 9) the illustrious list of nominees was unveiled. Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is out in front with 11 nods, while “Birdman” is close behind with an impressive 10 chances for glory.
Meanwhile, both Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) have been nominated for Best Actor, though Redmayne insists there’s no competition between them. He explained, "One can try and create a rivalry but it will not happen! We both absolutely understand people wanting to pitch us against each other, but we are old, old friends and I think he is the most wonderful actor. He is sensational in 'The Imitation Game' and I love watching him.”

Last night the 2015 BAFTA award nominations were announced with The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the field with 11 nominations and Birdman and The Theory of Everything not too far behind with ten nominations each. But as much as the talk will be of who got nominated, the fact Ava DuVernay's Selma went home without a single nomination will certainly have people wondering about its Oscar chances. Well, don't worry, it's getting nominated, it just won't win. However, the one film that does seem to be truly in trouble (despite Angelina Jolie meeting the Pope) is Unbroken, which also didn't receive a single nomination. Just yesterday I moved Unbroken out of the list of my Best Picture predictions and it seems that may have been the right move. Other intriguing developments include no nomination for The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum. The film earned nine nominations, but director wasn't one of them,...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations.
