The Alamo Guide

Surely you’ve heard the hubbub. Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau graced us with their presence at a sneak screening of Iron Man 2 on Tuesday (aka, raddest Tuesday ever!). You can read all about that Here, but fair warning, you might get a little jealous. Be comforted by the fact that I didn’t see Rdj either. What a handsome fellow…
No Time For Moping! We’ve got too much fun stuff to do. First of all, tickets for the Second Screening Of Weird Al Live In Person go on sale in less than 24 hours! Fact. Don’t miss the sale or there will be no Wheel of Fish for you! Also, Fantastic Fest 2008 favorite The Good, The Bad, And The Weird opens Friday at S. Lamar. This movie is pure fun, not to mention its gorgeous visuals (and a couple of the actors.

Song Kang Ho as "The Weird"
Fantastic Fest favorite The Good, The Bad, The Weird opens this Friday at Alamo South Lamar!
We of course think it’s every movie-lovers’ duty to check it out on the big screen, but if you don’t trust us as a reliable source, check out what some of the critics have been saying…
“A Full Throttle Thrill Ride.” V.A. Musetto, New York Post
“Critics Pick! Has an eye-popping energy all its own.” Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine
“****! Unadulterated guns-and-guts fun!” David Fear, Time Out New York
“Ridiculous Fun…A Must See. Make the effort. You’ll be glad you did.” Anton Sirius, Aint It Cool News
“Like John Wayne and Quentin Tarantino’s love child, “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” is pulpy, schlocky fun—a violent neo-Western that’s less interested in verisimilitude than it is in making sure you have a wickedly bang-up time.

The Online Film Critics Society, the international association for Internet-based film reviewers and journalists, has elected its new Governing Committee. Readers of film websites will recognize the names: Eric D. Snider was re-elected to a second consecutive term. The Portland, Ore.-based critic writes for Film.com, Cinematical, and EricDSnider.com. Phil Hall, who had previously served on the committee from 2002-2009. Hall is the New York-based contributing editor for Film Threat and is the author of four books, most recently The History of Independent Cinema (BearManor Media, 2009). Also, David Cornelius, the Cincinnati-based reviewer for eFilmCritic.com, joins the Governing Committee for the first time. The three-member Governing Committee will serve through March 2011. Founded in 1997, the Online Film Critics Society has been a major force in establishing and [...]...

Fine, I'll confess: I had had my doubts about Clint Eastwood's relatively stealthy December drama, Gran Torino... that is, until I watched the just released trailer over at Apple (to go along with the recent poster and push, natch).
The earliest synopsis gave me a vibe not unlike David Cornelius' take on the material, and yet, despite Eastwood in fact yelling at Asian-American youngsters to get off his lawn, he really seems to be letting his direction best serve this performance, which could single-handedly salvage a simple-sounding 'never too late to learn a life lesson' plot and probably garner the attention of a certain Academy that often has room for his work (it doesn't hurt his chances that this may very well be his last effort in front of the cameras).
Let's face it -- the man's got grizzled down pat as an actor, and redemption nailed as a filmmaker,...

So last week, the official theme song for Quantum of Solace -- y'know, that new James Bond flick -- was formally released online, and above is the music video for Jack White and Alicia Keys' "Another Way to Die." This managed to slip past us, probably because we were all still drooling over Erik's chance to comandeer an Aston friggin' Martin (no, no, 'jealous' isn't quite the word...), and now that it's out, opinions are becoming considerably divided.
On his personal blog, Bond devotee David Cornelius of eFilmCritic.com said "it's, um, not good. Really, really not good. The Coke commercial focused on the catchy hook, which was good. But the rest of the song? Not good. We're talking "Die Another Day" not good. Argh."
Devindra Hardawar of /Film feels a little less harsh about it: "It's not a terrible song (see Madonna's for Die Another Day for...
