Portishead singer Beth Gibbons has collaborated with The Miraculous Love Kids of Afghanistan — a musical group of girl refugees – on a new cover that combines Joy Division’s “Atmosphere” and David Bowie’s “Heroes.”
The release of the cover is timed with the two-year anniversary of America’s pull-out from Afghanistan, which allowed the Taliban to regain control of the country and end many of its citizen’s freedoms — including women’s opportunity to play music.
Launched by Lanny Cordola in 2016, The Miraculous Love Kids of Afghanistan taught music, math, reading, and other essential life skills to nearly 200 female students living in the country. Following America’s departure from Afghanistan, Cordola and many of the girls and their families evacuated the country and sought refuge in Islamabad.
In order to raise awareness to the girls’ plight, Cordola has enlisted some high-profile Western musicians for collaborations. Most recently, Nick Cave joined...

Nick Cave has teamed up with the Miraculous Love Kids of Afghanistan — a musical group of girl refugees — for their new single “Breathless/Beautiful.” Listen to it below.
Based on “Wife With Eyes Closed,” a poem Cave wrote about his wife Susie for Issue #60 of his The Red Hand Files, “Breathless/Beautiful” is a resonant number heightened by the children’s saccharine harmonies. Group founder Lanny Cordola intros the track with gravelly vocals backed by slow acoustic guitar before Cave’s gruffness enters the picture.
“The words resonated deeply in my soul and it struck me how even in loss, grief, and the harsh agonies of the world, we can create a sacred chamber in the heart to keep our loved ones,” Cordola said in a press release. It was his idea to expand on the poem, having first read it just two days after losing his brother. “Then the...

Brian Wilson lent his support and vocals to a recording of his 1988 song “Love and Mercy” by a group of Afghani girls who were affected by violence there. In 2012, two sisters were killed by a suicide bomber who’d hoped to kill U.S. troops in Kabul; their sister, Mursal, who was 8 at the time, survived. She met the American musician Lanny Cordola in 2015, and he helped put together an ensemble of former street children called the Miraculous Love Kids/Girl With a Guitar that features Mursal as their frontwoman.
