On a snowy afternoon in 1958, Annette Funicello, Tommy Cole, and several other The Mickey Mouse Club members were on an East Coast bus tour when they gave one unsuspecting family a huge surprise. "The new Annette series was coming on the air and we wanted to see it," Tommy exclusively recalls to Closer Weekly of the sitcom in which Annette played a rural girl who moves in with rich relatives. "Our bus driver went up to a house that had bikes on the porch — we knew there were kids. He knocked and said, 'I have some of the original Mouseketeers on my bus — can we come in and watch Annette with you?' And they went, 'Oh my!'" By the third season of The Mickey Mouse Club, Annette had become the most beloved girl in America. The Mickey Mouse Club cast. Review Round-Up: ‘Adult World’ & ‘Dream Girl’

Adult World

Stars: Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, John Cusack, Armando Riesco, Shannon Woodward, Chris Riggi, Scott Coffey, Darin Scott, Reed Birney, Catherine Lloyd Burns | Written by Andy Cochran | Directed by Scott Coffey

Helmed by actor-turned-director Scott Coffey, who many may recognise from 80s films such as Some Kind of Wonderful and Space Camp, Adult World is another in a long-line of American indie dramas – you know the type: the ones that mix witty dialogue and a hip soundtracks in the hopes of creating something loftier than the rest. This particular example follows Amy (Roberts), a naive college graduate who believes she’s destined to be a great poet, who begrudgingly accepts a job at a sex shop while she pursues a mentorship with her idol, reclusive writer Rat Billings (Cusack).

Adult World shares a lot in common with 2009′s Post Grad, in so much as both films deal with young

Movies This Week: August 2-8, 2013

This is one of those weekends where I've been actively creating an evolving list for myself to try and figure out how many movies I can realisically fit in over the next few days. While not much is happening in terms of new releases, there is a true embarrasment of riches when it comes to local classic film screenings.

Do you want to see A Clockwork Orange in 35mm at the Alamo Ritz on Saturday? Maybe you'd prefer a Keith Coogan double feature at the Ritz with Adventures In Babysitting and Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead tomorrow evening? How about catching Back To The Future and The Karate Kid in 35mm at the Paramount on Sunday? Those picks alone would fill up your weekend, but then you could try to squeeze in a double feature of digitally restored titles from the new Shintoho Mindwarp series followed by a 35mm

Disney 53 Double Feature Part I: The Fox and the Hound

As we march bravely on through 2013, Thn will take a nostalgic yet critical look at the 53 Walt Disney Animated Classics, from Snow White to Wreck-it Ralph, through the obscurity of Fun And Fancy Free to the Golden Age of Beauty And The Beast. These are the films the Walt Disney company are most proud of, the ones that hold a special place in our hearts, the ones that still cost a fortune to buy on DVD. This time, The Fox And The Hound.

Directed by Ted Berman, Richard Rich and Art Stevens

1981/ 83 minutes

Based upon the original novel by Daniel Mannix, The Fox And The Hound began its life under the working title Tod and Copper.

The original novel had a more realistic and bleak story, following the quest of a hunter and his dog, Copper, to shoot Tod after he has killed the hunter’s new dog, Chief. The

Short Starts: Watch ‘Playing For Keeps’ Screenwriter Robbie Fox’s ‘The Great O’Grady’

The upcoming romantic comedy Playing for Keeps may not look particularly enticing, but keep in mind that it’s written by Robbie Fox, who gave us the clever script for So I Married an Axe Murderer about 20 years ago. Of course, he followed that with a story credit on the Pauly Shore vehicle In the Army Now (which was rewritten) before disappearing for two decades — I’m only aware of one spec script he sold in 1999 for a time travel-based divorce comedy titled Twice Upon a Time, which has never been produced. He’s also done some uncredited work through his career, including rewrites on My Girl, but for the most part his output is unknown and inconsistent. Still, I thought it would be fun to go back to the beginning of his career and watch 25-year-old short film titled The Great O’Grady. Fox directed the 30-minute film in addition to scripting, and

Jaws (1975) Universal Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo Available Now

Steven Spielberg’s classic thriller has been painstakingly restored from the original film elements. Amity Island has never been so beautiful. The movie itself seems to improve with age, with amazing performances and scenes that still manage to unnerve — Susan Backlinie’s death at the beginning is truly one of the most horrifying ever portrayed onscreen. Making this a true “special edition” is the long-awaited release of The Shark Is Still Working, an expansive documentary on the making and the impact of the 1975 film. All of the surviving cast and crew are interviewed along with several minutes of never-before-seen footage.

Special Features:

*Digitally remastered and fully restored from high resolution 35mm original film elements.

*Digital Copy of Jaws

*UltraViolet Copy of Jaws

*The Shark Is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy

The 80s Are Back For More "Adventures In Babysitting"

Oh, to be an affluent, Chicago-based teenager in the late 1980s; judging by this and the entire oeuvre of John Hughes, there may not be a social set to envy more. It's not so much that all of these characters don't have any problems (they find enough of them here) as much as they are incapable of reacting to serious trauma in the way that it merits. The kids in Adventures in Babysitting get themselves in plenty of scrapes, but none of them seem unsolvable by way of moping or plain old gumption.

Stood up on her anniversary, Chris (Elisabeth Shue) decides to take a babysitting job tending Sara (Maia Brewton) and Brad (Keith Coogan) for the evening. When her friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) calls stranded from the inter-city, Chris has little choice but to go in and get her, bringing the kids and Daryl (Anthony Rapp) in tow.
