Apple TV+ FYC event honoring Emmy crafts nominees draws overflow crowd to Culver City
Image
They came from all over L.A. on Monday night to spend a languid, balmy August evening on the roof of the iconic One Culver building in the heart of Culver City. In the main, they were there to take a bow themselves or rise in applause for hairstylists, make-up artists, composers, sound editors and mixers, production designers, set decorators, main title designers, costume designers and casting directors who had earned 2024 nominations for the Apple original series “The Morning Show,” “Palm Royale” and “Masters of the Air.”

The gathering was designed to shine a vivid light on some of those artisans who tend to receive significantly less attention than the above-the-line red carpet talent but are...

Art Directors Guild Elects First All-Female Team of Top-Ranking Executive Board Officers
Image
The Art Directors Guild has elected a new slate of executive board officers, and for the first time in the union’s history, the top-ranking four are all women.

In a vote that took place over mail in March and April, the members of the IATSE-affiliated union chose Not Dead Yet and Corporate production designer Dina Lipton to be their president, with current president Nelson Coates vacating the role after eight and a half years. Senior set designer Kristen Davis (A Friend of the Family, Monster) was appointed vice president and supervising art director Helen Harwell (Monster, Fargo) was elected as treasurer. Art director and senior set designer Judy Cosgrove (Loot, The Offer) was re-elected as secretary. These executive officers’ terms, which will last three years, begin on June 1.

In a statement, Lipton thanked the union’s members for electing her and said she looked forward to “working hard on...

All will serve three-year terms commencing June 1, 2024.

“I’m thrilled to assume the role of President,” said Lipton in a statement. “Thank you to my fellow Guild members for voting me into this role. I’m looking forward to working hard on behalf of the membership during my term.”

Art Directors Guild Local 800 Reaches Tentative Deal with Studios
Image
That’s another of the 13 IATSE locals down, but still many to go. The Art Directors Guild, IATSE Local 800, announced to its members Thursday night that it reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with terms specific to its members.

A statement from Adg president Nelson Coates and national executive director Chuck Parker said a deal was reached after three days in the negotiating room to hammer out the portion of IATSE’s 2024 basic agreement that covers Local 800 specifically. Coates and Parker also said that Local 729, which covers set painters and sign writers, reached a tentative deal, in addition to the previously reported agreement for the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600.

“Congratulations! We wish the other ten West Coast Studio locals good luck as they negotiate their issues,” Adg said in its statement. “Continuing to build on this success through the month of April is crucial as we will...

Art Directors Guild & Studios Have Tentative Agreement On “Local 800 Specific Portions” Of IATSE General Agreement
Image
Exclusive: The first days of spring are seeing labor peace bloom in Hollywood.

First, the International Cinematographer’s Guild came to a tentative agreement yesterday with the studios in local specific talks, and now the Art Director Guild has a deal of its own.

“Last night, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Local 800 Bargaining Unit (pictured above) wrapped up its in-person three-day negotiations with the AMPTP at 10pm, by reaching a tentative agreement for the Local 800-specific portion of the 2021-24 Basic Agreement,” confirmed Adg Local 800 President Nelson Coates and Adg Local 800 National Executive Director Chuck Parker in a missive just sent out to members.

“We understand that Locals 600 and 729 have also reached tentative agreements and to them we say, ‘Congratulations!’” the guild chiefs added of the Icg and the Set Painter & Sign-Writers guild. “We wish the other ten West Coast Studio locals good luck as they negotiate their issues.”

Several IATSE Locals Reach Tentative Agreements With Studios on Craft-Specific Issues
Image
Several IATSE Locals — the International Cinematographers Guild, the Art Directors Guild and a union covering motion picture set painters and sign writers — have reached tentative agreements with studios and streamers on their craft-specific issues.

IATSE’s largest Local, the International Cinematographers Guild, told members Wednesday night that it had struck a provisional deal. “Today marked the conclusion of our bargaining team’s in-person local negotiations with the AMPTP regarding our Camera and Publicist Agreements,” IATSE Local 600 said in a memo on Wednesday night provided by a union source. “We’ve reached a tentative agreement on Local 600 specific issues. We wish the remainder of the West Coast Studio Locals best of luck as they negotiate their local specific issues.”

The Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800), meanwhile, announced on Thursday that it had also reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP. “Last night, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the Local 800 Bargaining Unit… wrapped up...

Hollywood Contraction: How Fewer Jobs & The Threat Of Another Strike Is Pushing Btl Workers To The Brink
Image
Editor’s note: This is the latest installment in the Deadline series Hollywood Contraction, which examines the job losses caused by ongoing, industrywide cost-cutting.

The Unity Rally on Sunday that was meant to fire up crew members before IATSE and Teamsters Local 399 begin negotiations with Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers served two important goals: it reminded below-the-line workers that union leaders will be dogged in their fight for better benefits and pension for members, and made it clear they’ll be ready to “shut it down, f*cking day one” if the talks don’t go their way.

But no matter how many times Local 399’s Lindsay Dougherty dropped an f-bomb or the crowd shouted “many crafts, one fight,” there was no mention of the real elephant in the room, er, parking lot — namely, how many (or few) crew members are actually working these days because of accelerated contraction in Hollywood.

‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Saltburn’ Collect Art Directors Guild Awards
Image
Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.

Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.

Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. A year ago, eventual Oscar winner All Quiet on the Western Front was nominated in the period...

Art Directors Guild 2024 Winners Include ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Oppenheimer,’ and ‘Beef’
Image
Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.

Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

As previously announced, the Adg Awards honored Mimi Leder (Apple TV’s...

‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Poor Things’ Take Top Honors at Art Directors Guild Awards
Image
“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.

Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.

“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.

In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

What to watch this weekend November 10, 2023: TV awards contenders
Image
It’d be easy to write off Apple TV+’s new series “The Buccaneers” as the service’s attempt to develop its own version of Netflix’s Emmy-winning “Bridgerton.” After all, the show checks a lot of the same boxes. Romance! Opulent costuming! A handsome duke! Uptight English people! But the show, which is inspired by Edith Wharton’s final, unfinished novel, is anything but a copycat.

Set in the 19th century, the surprisingly modern series from creator Katherine Jakeways follows a group of wealthy young Americans who travel to England in search of husbands after one of their own, Conchita (Alisha Boe), weds an aristocrat from across the pond. The result is a lively and entertaining clashing of cultures, as the stuffy families we’re used to finding in traditional period dramas don’t know what to make of these impulsive young newcomers. While the brash and free-spirited Conchita...

‘The Morning Show’ editor Carole Kravetz Aykanian on returning to the hit series for Season 3: It was ‘delicious’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
After cutting four episodes of “The Morning Show’s” debut season, Carole Kravetz Aykanian wasn’t able to return to the editing room for the second season. But she was back behind the monitor for the third installment of the hit Apple TV+ series — which just concluded its 10-episode run on Nov. 8 — and excited to dive right back into the world of the topical drama.

“[It was] delicious!” she exclaims during a recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch the full exclusive video interview above). “It’s a show that I’ve really enjoyed working on. Season 1 — it was a very dear season to me, just because of the subject matter, the #MeToo movement; there were some very profound themes that touched me, and the collaboration with everyone was just wonderful… I’m so happy to be back on Season 3. [It was] very exciting to go back into the world and reconnect with the characters...

The Morning Show Production Designer and Casting Director Unpack Season 3 Ahead of Finale
Image
Season three of The Morning Show has been anything but tepid. The hit Apple TV+ series found Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson being launched into space only to be thrust into another scandal, with questions about her ethics by the season’s later episodes. Jenner Anniston’s Alex Levy had a hit podcast, but she stirred up more drama within the Uba Network and made even more questionable relationship choices — Oh, Alex, stop!

The biggest buzz this season was on Jon Hamm, who entered the mix as billionaire Paul Marks, who would move forward with his bid to take over the Uba network. There were plenty of characters and story arcs, of course, which the series ties together as it heads into the season finale on November 8.

All of it was thought out with precision long before season two aired. Production designer Nelson Coates and casting director Victoria Thomas shared...

Why ‘The Morning Show’ Revisited the Insurrection for Key Season 3 Storyline
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the fifth episode of The Morning Show season three, “Love Island.”]

After jumping ahead two years, The Morning Show hit rewind this week to go back to where the Apple TV+ series ended last season: March of 2020.

The fifth episode in season three, titled “Love Island,” flashed back to shortly after the outbreak of Covid-19 to fill viewers in on what happened in the missing two years between seasons three and four of the Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston media drama.

Most notably, it answered the big question looming over the first half of season three: What’s the secret between news anchor Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon) and Uba network boss Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup)? A secret so big they would do anything to keep it quiet? (Even suggest paying out the network’s hackers $50 million to keep their private communications from being leaked.)

Well, “Love Island” answered the mystery when it revealed that Bradley,...

How ‘The Morning Show’ Achieved Stellar Space Scenes With A 19-Foot High Rocket Capsule
Image
“The Morning Show” makers wanted to do something grand for season three. So, showrunners Mimi Leder and Charlotte Stoudt told production designer Nelson Coates that “we’re doing all these environments. We’re going to space and it’s going to be right up front.”

Coates’ goal was to create a sense of excitement and urgency without involving science fiction. And for that, a 19-foot-tall capsule, rocket, and launch pad had to be constructed.

As reported by Variety, Coates says: “It’s the latest and greatest technology available to the billionaires. So, I looked at Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin and SpaceX to find commonalities.” He realized he wanted it to feel like “you are on a rocket, and there is a booster.”

Coates dispatched location scouts in order to find wide stretches of...

Art Directors Guild Chief Says Below-The-Line Workers Are “Bearing The Brunt” of Ongoing WGA & SAG-AFTRA Strikes
Image
Chuck Parker, national executive director of the Art Directors Guild, IATSE Local 800, said that “it has become frighteningly apparent” that below-the-line workers are “bearing the brunt” of the ongoing strikes by actors and writers. He is reminding his members that help is available for those struggling to maintain their union health coverage and to make ends meet.

“I understand that most of you are frustrated by the condition that our Industry is currently in,” he wrote in an email to members on Friday. “Both the writers’ and actors’ strikes have brought our industry to its knees. I also realize that many of you have passed the point of frustration and find yourselves in despair, and for some, borderline desperation.

“While the writers and actors have the right to strike over what they feel (and have consistently communicated that) they deserve, they also feel that the employer is not engaging with them in a meaningful way.

The Fabelmans

Production Designer: Rick Carter

By Chuck Parker

In Steven Spielberg’s film about his childhood and finding his identity as an artist, pictured above, the challenge for Rick Carter and his crew was how to tell the story visually. He used the Fableman family’s three homes as primary reference points, with their different architectural styles and decorative elements adding nuance as the family moves from one house to another — with each member progressing through his or her own story.

‘The Morning Show’ production designer Nelson Coates on going ‘bigger’ and ‘around the world’ in 2nd season [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Apple TV+‘s “The Morning Show” was three and a half weeks into filming when production on its second season was forced to shut down in early 2020 due the then-oncoming Covid-19 pandemic. Although more than half of the second season had already been written at that point, the writers decided to rewrite it in order to incorporate what would become the global health crisis of our time into the original storyline. This decision, of course, had a significant effect on the entire production of the season. “After Covid, they decided that everything was going to get bigger and go around the world,” says production designer Nelson Coates, who boarded the show ahead of Season 2, in a new webchat with Gold Derby. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Developed by Kerry Ehrin and partly inspired by consulting producer Brian Stelter‘s behind-the-scenes book “Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World...

Chuck Parker Re-Elected To Art Directors Guild’s Top Post
Image
Chuck Parker has been re-elected national executive director of the Art Directors Guild, IATSE Local 800. Three years ago, he ran unopposed, but this year four challengers were on the ballot.

With 391 votes, Parker handily defeated former guild president Thomas Walsh, who received 171 votes; former guild president Mimi Gramatky, who got 114 votes; Susan Largent, a member of the guild for more than 20 years, who received 91 votes, and Marcia Hinds, a former member of the guild’s executive board, who received 39 votes.

In a surprise upset, Joel Cohen, the guild’s field rep for the past five years, defeated Parker’s ally, who goes by the name dooner, in his bid to be re-elected associate national executive director. In that race, Cohen received 421 votes to dooner’s 388.

The Art Directors Guild is unusual in that it’s the only Hollywood guild with national jurisdiction that elects its top executive officer – the result...

‘One Perfect Shot’: ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Costume Designer Recalls Dressing Michelle Yeoh in a ‘Queenly Way’
Image
HBO Max’s new series “One Perfect Shot” is a masterclass in filmmaking. Ava DuVernay hosts and executive produces the series, inspired by the Twitter account of the same name.

Patty Jenkins, Aaron Sorkin, Kasi Lemmons, Jon M. Chu, Malcolm D. Lee and Michael Mann are among the featured filmmakers who share their obstacles, challenges, lessons and triumphs as they talk about that one perfect shot. In the case of Chu, he discusses “Crazy Rich Asians” and the path to making a film that would herald a new moment in storytelling for Aapi representation in Hollywood.

Chu is joined by production designer Nelson Coates and costume designer Mary Vogt. As they recall the epic wedding scene, Vogt tells Chu how she worked with the extras and locals from Singapore to “bring your couture dresses and real diamonds” — and that’s how the team pulled off a 40 million dollar wedding scene on a 35 million film budget.

‘Dune’ wins at Art Directors Guild Awards on the way to Oscars
Image
“Dune” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Production Design with a win on March 6 at the Art Directors Guild Awards. Over the first 25 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various genre categories. “Dune” prevailed in the fantasy film race over “Cruella,” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” “The Green Knight” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

Its closest Oscar competition, “Nightmare Alley,” won the period picture prize over two other Oscar contenders — “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and “West Side Story.” The fifth Oscar nominee, “The Power of the Dog,” was snubbed in that race in favor of “The French Dispatch” and “Licorice Pizza.”

“No Time to Die” won the contemporary category over “Candyman,” “Don’t Look Up,” “In the Heights” and “The Lost Daughter.”

2022 Art Directors Guild Awards: ‘Dune,’ ‘Nightmare Alley,’ and ‘No Time to Die’ Win Top Film Prizes
Image
“Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight), and “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA) were the big film winners Saturday at the 26th Art Directors Guild Awards (held at the Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown).

Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” took sci-fi honors, Guillermo del Toro’s noirish “Nightmare Alley” won for period, and Cary Fukanaga’s “No Time to Die” (which closed out Daniel Craig’s James Bond saga), earned the contemporary prize. Additionally, “Encanto,” the Oscar favorite from Disney, grabbed the animated feature award.

Meanwhile, “Squid Game” (Netflix), “What We Do in the Shadows” (FX), and Marvel’s “Loki” and “WandaVision” from Disney+ won the major TV prizes.

In terms of an Oscar predictor, the production design race now comes down to “Dune” and “Nightmare Alley.” “No Time to Die” is not in contention, but the other nominees are “West Side Story” (20th Century), “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix...

Art Directors Guild Awards: ‘Dune,’ ‘Nightmare Alley,’ Are Big Winners As Kevin Costner, Denis Villeneuve Liven Up Show
Image
Who’d have thought the 26th annual Art Directors Guild Awards would be such a good party?

Community alum and host Yvette Nicole Brown kicked things off with great energy and a few genuinely funny jokes. There followed two genuinely engaging acceptance speeches from Ethan Tobman and François Audouy and then a genuinely emotional — and funny — introduction from Kevin Costner for his longtime collaborator, production designer Ida Ransom, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I’m so impressed how many production designers are not freaked out by talking up here,” said a visibly nervous Costner. “It’s freaking me out.”

The guild also awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards to Donna Cline, Anne Harris and Denise & Michael Okuda.

Oscar-nominated Dune director Denis Villeneuve received the William Cameron Menzies Award, for which he credited all the production designers he has worked with, especially frequent collaborator Patrice Vermette. Vermette, it turns out, won the gong for Fantasy Feature Film.

Oscars show changes denounced by Hollywood guilds and Jimmy Fallon, but not Jimmy Kimmel
Image
Though far more serious problems emerged on the world stage in the last 24 hours, there are some in Hollywood still not ready to accept the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s unexpected decision to bump eight categories — including best score, production design, costume and hair, and editing — out of the live television broadcast.

Not surprisingly, the American Cinema Editors (Ace), an honorary society that many editors belong to, issued a strong rebuke of the decision. “We are deeply disappointed by the Academy’s decision to alter the way certain categories, including film editing, will be presented in the Oscars telecast. It sends a message that some creative disciplines are more vital than others. Nothing could be further from the truth and all who make movies know this,” their statement read.

It continued, “As a group of artists wholly dedicated to advancing the art and prestige of film editing,...

A Tense Zoom Call. Then Shock and Anger as Industry Reacts to Oscar Category Cuts
Image
A week ago, Oscar nominees from branches including editing, sound, and makeup and hair were invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a virtual town hall. They assumed, according to one individual who attended the Tuesday event, that the meeting was being called to discuss Covid-19 protocols for Hollywood’s biggest night.

Instead, they were informed that their categories would not air live on the telecast, said the source (a current nominee who agreed to speak with Variety on the condition of anonymity). In total, eight different Oscar categories — original score, makeup and hairstyling, documentary short, film editing, production design, animated short, live action short and sound — will be awarded prior to the start of the upcoming March 27 show, edited for time, and broadcast sporadically throughout the evening. Other awards shows, such as the Tonys, have deployed a similar approach, but the move has sparked controversy...
