Heartfelt, gently moving drama inspired by director Ann Hu’s own experiences, will resonate with any parent who has had to advocate for their child
Any parent who has had to advocate for their child will find something to relate to in Chinese-American director Ann Hu’s well-intentioned and gently moving drama. It’s loosely inspired by her own experiences raising a dyslexic daughter, fictionalised here into the story of an illiterate woman who goes to the ends of the earth – at least that’s how it feels – in emigrating from China to New York to get specialist educational support for her seven-year-old.
The acting is patchy in places, but Harmonie He marches away with the movie with a lively performance as sunny little Meimei, who is unable to read or write at school in China. Just before Meimei is expelled (“not normal” is the headteacher’s verdict), a visiting American teacher,...

Perhaps it was the simple excitement of getting back together more than two years after the cancellation of their show, but the cast and creator of HBO’s Bored to Death had a straight-up love-in at last Saturday’s Sf Sketchfest. Jonathan Ames, Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis, and Ted Danson gushed over each other and the show as if each were giving their own version of a best-man speech. Or maybe it was, as Galifianakis insinuated, the prior-to-showtime ingestion (on Ames's part, at least) of the show’s fourth most prominent character: weed. Hard to say.Danson called his role as magazine editor George Christopher “the best part I’ve ever had,” and Schwartzman called his three years with the show “the best time of my life.” So it’s no surprise that the gang wants to get back together for a Bored to Death movie. Ames said he’s...

Grange Hill. The only school kids ever seemed to be interested in. Us included…
At your school, did anyone die in the swimming pool? Did you have to contend with vicious bullies (and we’re talking about the teachers!)? Did everyone have London accents coarse enough to strip the paint off the classroom doors? Yes? Flippin’ ’eck, you must have gone to Grange Hill!
If you grew up in the 1980s but don’t have a fondness for Grange Hill, there’s probably only one explanation: you were banned from watching it. Yep, for those of us who could get away with it, this rites-of-passage drama series about the pupils of a north-London comprehensive was must-see television, but by parents and teachers it was generally despised. It all started in 1978, and continues to this day (just about), but its golden age was undoubtedly the 1980s.

If you thought HBO's neo-noir sitcom Bored To Death had, um, died a death when it shuffled off the premium cable television network's slate two years ago, think again, because Bored To Death is coming back to life... in film form. Between 2009 and 2011, Bored To Death starred Jason Schwartzman as bumbling private-investigator-cum-writer Jonathan Ames, Zach Galifianakis as his comic book artist best friend Ray Hueston and Ted Danson as George Christopher, Jonathan's editor and kinda-sorta-father figure.Together they investigated crimes and attempted to make you laugh in a criminal fashion. Unfortunately, this all came to an abrupt end during its third and final season, when a time change and falling figures saw the end of the show - or so you thought. Now, the movie has a strapline of "Jonathan, Ray, and George reunite to fight crime, commit crime, lose their minds and fail at love in a Bored to Death feature-length slapstick adventure!

If you’ve never seen Jonathan Ames’s recently cancelled HBO show Bored to Death, you might want to brush up on the premium cable mystery/comedy show, for costar Ted Danson recently suggested in an interview with French journalist Pierre Lenglas (according to Lenglas’s Twitter account) that a feature-length Bored to Death movie might be in the works. To be fair, nothing official has been announced and, according to Vulture, HBO qualified Danson’s statement my stating that the creators and talent of the show are only in the early stages of conversation. But with Jason Schwartzman and Zack Galifianakis rounding out the show’s cast, a Bored to Death movie might make quite a bit of sense. Bored to Death ran for three seasons from 2009-2011, and chronicled the misadventures of Jonathan Ames (Schwartzman), a struggling writer who becomes an amateur detective in order to get over being dumped by his girlfriend Suzanne (Olivia Thirlby...

Ted Danson has confirmed that a Bored to Death TV movie is in the planning stages. Rumours of a follow-up to the axed HBO comedy - which also starred Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis - emerged from the recent Monte Carlo Television Festival. "I'd love it," Danson said at a press conference during the festival. "I think it's a great idea because we didn't really get to finish. We thought we were coming back and then we discovered we weren't." The actor - who played magazine editor George Christopher - added that HBO is in early talks with show creator Jonathan Ames about the continuation. (more)...

While we're generally fans of the kind of programming HBO tends to support, their decision to cancel "Bored To Death" at the end of last year was heartbreaking. While the show was not a huge hit, over three excellent seasons it developed a cult following and was one of the funniest, wittiest shows on television. And the show didn't go quietly into the night either -- a minor online campaign started up to try and persuade HBO to keep the show going. And it looks like they've been listening.
Yesterday, at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, Ted Danson dropped the nugget that a 90-minute film was in the works, and Vulture worked their Rolodex and called HBO who confirmed that there have "been some conversations" but "it's at a very early stage." The fact that they're even considering the idea is frankly kind of awesome. If you didn't see the show,...

It is both upsetting and unfortunate that more often than not truly great and inventive Us sitcoms get cancelled before their time is up, and rarely see the light of day on this side of the pond. The obvious example is of course the rapturously funny and anarchic Arrested Development, which was ground to a halt after three brilliant seasons.
It’s perhaps understandable why the fly on the wall story of a madcap and highly unorthodox family of down and out real estate moguls got the chop, its humour relied on characters which were subtly and intricately drawn across fifty three densely packed episodes, and its multi-narrative structure meant it wasn’t exactly easy to pick up for the casual viewer. Jokes more often than not rely on knowledge of other jokes from several episodes previous, which makes for a rewarding experience for the diehard fan, but a bit...

"Bored To Death" was canceled Tuesday by HBO, swept out in a holiday housecleaning that also took "How To Make It In America" and "Hung." I can't blame the network for putting "How to Make It" and "Hung" down. While the former improved marginally in its second season, it was laughably predictable and inevitably doomed by the "Entourage" shadow. And once the male hooker novelty wore off, "Hung" was just kind of taking up space.
But I'm genuinely bummed (and kind of outraged!) to see "Bored to Death" go. Granted, it had a good run and its Season 3 premiere drew a paltry 240,000 viewers, numbers that standout shows like The CW's "Hart of Dixie" and ABC's "Man Up" would laugh at. But still, I call Bs. I was under the impression HBO was not permitted to cancel any of their shows that I like.
And "Bored to Death" was pretty damn good.

A few weeks ago I was blathering about the absence of new superheroes in the current television schedules. Shame on me! I forgot about Super Ray.
Before you rush off to consult TV Guide searching for time and channel, be assured that you won’t find Ray there. The show he’s on isn’t about him. Fact is, he’s not exactly on the show. He’s a character created by one of the fictional people who is on the show. This character, also named Ray, is a comic book artist and Super Ray is his brainchild.
Still with me? Good, because it gets even more complicated.
The show is called Bored to Death and it concerns Jonathan Ames, a largely unpublished writer who moonlights as a private eye, his editor/restaurateur mentor George, and his cartoonist pal Ray. It’s a comedy, one which has grown on me; initially,...

Mary Steenburgen will join in on the fun at Tgs when 30 Rock returns to NBC’s midseason lineup. (In other words, it’ll return later rather than sooner, dang it; NBC has yet to reveal its premiere date).

You could argue that it’s a little silly to pick on a tiny show like Bored to Death. The HBO comedy has been averaging roughly a quarter of a million viewers this season, a number that barely even looks impressive on YouTube anymore. Or maybe the better comparison for Bored to Death is to an old-timey public access series, the kind of haphazard production a group of locals would organize back when the average local American still had time for hobbies. After all, the concerns of Bored to Death are so concerned with an extremely specific sliver of contemporary...

Starring Jason Schwartzman as the fictional Jonathan Ames, Bored To Death tells the story of the noir-obsessed writer, who moonlights as an unlicensed private detective listing his services on Craigslist. This season, Ames has published “A Blonde in the Woods,” his collection of mystery stories, and is living in the topmost apartment of Brooklyn’s Williamsburgh bank tower, while putting his sleuthing skills to the test for a myriad of clients new and old. Meanwhile, Jonathan’s mentor and benefactor George Christopher, played by Ted Danson, has left the magazine business...

The men of Bored to Death love each other. Not in the sharing a bed sense, though the characters played by Ted Danson, Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis do that in Season 3, which begins Monday. It’s the sort of brotherly obsession that allows men tender moments between the homoerotic jokes.
Schwartzman plays Jonathan Ames, a struggling novelist who moonlights as a private eye, bumbling through Brooklyn mysteries such as stolen sperm and missing screenplays. The character is loosely based on the author Jonathan Ames, who is the show’s creator and once drove a taxi while he was a struggling novelist. HBO has officially announced the premiere dates for its upcoming fall shows, including a potential Emmy powerhouse, a summer transplant, and a new series from a respected actress.
The parade of premieres starts Sunday, September 25th, as Boardwalk Empire will debut its second season in typically grand fashion. The show, starring Steve Buscemi as powerful political player Nucky Thompson, has been an awards magnet since it finished its first season in December.
A week after we travel back to the 1920s with Buscemi, fellow Emmy nominee Kelly MacDonald, Michael Pitt, and company, it's time to spring forward with the premieres of Hung and How to Make It in America. Both comedies will be debuting on Sunday, October 2nd at 10:00 and 10:30, respectively. It'll be the third season for Hung, which stars Thomas Jane as a male prostitute trying to provide for his children in a tough economy, and the first in the fall.

Jonathan Ames is curious. Not in the sense that he's strange - though he surmises he may have some sort of personality disorder - but rather, his unending study of human nature, a study into which he often injects himself as the subject. His unending itch has helped him build a resume that reads boxer, evening companion to the elderly, cab driver, award winning author, and now, acclaimed television show creator.
That curiosity is also why, right in the middle of giving a thoughtful answer during our interview, Ames suddenly stops, intrigued by a front page photo in the New York Times that sits on a table between us.
"I keep looking at this - it looks like a painting, from my angle. But it's a... photo," he says, voice trailing off as he moves his nose closer to the ink.

My expectations were perhaps too high for Bored To Death; based on its eclectic cast, an appealing premise, and the reputation of HBO. So my heart sank when the pilot, “Stockholm Syndrome” was shown to be such an uninteresting, humorless, lethargic chore that utterly failed to amuse…
Created by Jonathan Ames, Bored To Death‘s lead character is a pointless proxy of the author, also a writer named Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman.) The fictional Ames is struggling with writer’s block in Brooklyn as he works on his sophomore novel, but a fondness for Raymond Chandler’s oeuvre inspires in him a unique distraction, as he’s sets himself up as an unlicensed P.I on Craigslist.
In the pilot, Ames tackles his first case: to find a female client’s missing sister, whom she assumes has been kidnapped by her meth-head British boyfriend Vincent (Richard Short.) Quite why the...

The Killing and Wonders Of The Universe come to an end, Frank Skinner's Opinionated returns, there's the big Clone Wars finale, and Bored To Death comes to the UK. Plus: movies!
Returning for a second series is Frank Skinner's Opinionated, airing tonight, Friday, March 25th at 10:00pm on BBC2. We enjoyed the first series, which saw two guest comedians per week join Frank on couches in front of studio audiences to discuss the week's goings-on. Another sofa set of episodes is certainly welcome in our front rooms.
Then, three series wrap up this week. The first was a brief, but enjoyable four episodes of Wonders Of The Universe, which concludes on Sunday, March 27th at 9:00pm on BBC2 with, Messengers. We have reviews of the series here, and hope to have the finale covered soon.

Wherever Ted Danson goes, Mary Steenburgen will likely follow -- and vice versa. Such has been the case since the two actors married in 1995, becoming one of our favorite couples in Hollywood.
The AP reports that the latest collaboration between the two will take place during the next run of HBO's "Bored to Death." Danson confirms her appearance in a recent interview.
But who will she play -- and how many other times have they acted together? The answers to both of those questions lay in our brief, thorough history of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Danson's shared TV credits:
"Gulliver's Travels," 1996
It's been 15 years since we saw NBC's mini-series based on the Swift satire, but taking a look back at the early days of their romance, the "world-shattering special effects" and Danson's flowing extensions has pushed it to the top of our Netflix queue.
"Ink," 1996 - 1997

New York — "Bored to Death" is now a family affair in the household of Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen.
Danson says Steenburgen, his wife, is joining the cast for the new season of the HBO comedy due to air in the fall.
He says Steenburgen plays the vocal coach whom his character, George Christopher, hires after he decides to sing at a charity fundraiser where "Man of La Mancha" is being performed. Danson notes neither he nor his character can sing.
Danson and Steenburgen are moving to New York City, where the show is filmed, for several months.
Danson is publicizing his book, "Oceana," out March 15, about the dangers facing the world's oceans. He says his "Bored" co-stars Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis (gal-ih-fih-nah'-kihs) are "incredibly supportive" of the cause, which he has been involved in since 1987.

"You are a marijuana addict...with narcissistic personality disorder," a substance counselor diagnosed George Christopher last night, adding the final assessment shortly after noticing a massive self-portrait hanging from George's wood-paneled office. I am curious then, how any kind of mental health professional would diagnose the real Jonathan Ames, after watching last night's season two finale, "Super Ray is Mortal!," which featured another cameo from the real Jonathan Ames in a series that that centers on a marijuana-dependent character, also named Jonathan Ames. Who knows! For now, let's get to the final Hipster Quotient of the season.

I usually don’t have my act together enough to watch Bored to Death on time (HBO, Sunday nights, 10-10:30 Et). This week was different! So here I am posting about “Forty-Two Down,” which guest-starred Kristen Wiig as a wino wackjob and Kevin Bacon as his “highly evolved” (because he can’t grow a beard) self.
Bored to Death is a true delight. All of it. All The Time. I get so wrapped up in the details — thoughtful cinematography, my own neighborhood used as a romping ground (can’t hurt!), a never-obtrusive score — that when it all wraps up,...

Chicago – The ability of HBO to launch a series and let it develop is one of the true advantages of their subscription system. Of course that and no censorship issues. The series “Bored to Death” begins its second season on September 26th at 9pm Cst, featuring Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis.

Created by writer Jonathan Ames, the premise of the show remains the same. A writer named Jonathan Ames (Schwartzman) places an ad on Craigslist touting himself as a private detective, unlicensed. Between the circumstances of his new caseload, he deals with issues of his second novel (rejected) through his magazine publisher friend George Christopher (Ted Danson) and best friend Ray Hueston (Zach Galifianakis).

Another Tuesday has passed, another week of awesome DVD and Blu-ray releases to help relieve you of all of your hard earned cash. This week I take a look at incredible silent film collection being released by our friends at Kino Lorber, a surprisingly funny show from HBO, and a ton of stuff that I haven’t see yet, but am interested in.
I’m linking all of the covers to their Amazon counterparts, and will include Netflix options for those titles worthy of a rental instead of a purchase. By purchasing the discs through our site, you’re helping us out!
I obviously skipped several of the bigger titles like Robin Hood, for various reasons. I wasn’t sent any of the big stuff to review, and for the titles I wasn’t sent, I wanted to weed through all of the junk, to find the real gems.

Here is the new poster art for Bored to Death Season 2. Starring Jason Schwartzman (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Funny People) as the fictional Jonathan Ames, Bored to Death follows the misadventures of this noir-fiction-obsessed writer, who moonlights as an unlicensed private detective listing his services on Craigslist. Having recently finished his second novel (which remains unpublished) and started up a new romance, Jonathan continues to put his sleuthing skills to the test while teaching a night class on fiction writing. Meanwhile, Jonathan’s needy mentor George Christopher, played by Ted Danson (HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm), struggles with his magazine’s new cost-cutting publisher and some sobering medical news. And Jonathan’s confidant, cartoonist Ray Hueston, played by Zach Galifianakis (Dinner for Schmucks, The Hangover), deals with his own personal crisis by creating a new self-modeled comic-book character named Super Ray, resulting in a measure of success. The series...

We've always liked Ted Danson, but in the past couple of years we've come to love him.
Truly, once you've seen him snort cocaine off a hooker while ordering a hit on an enemy during the first season of "Damages" it's really hard not to love him.
In the February issue of GQ, the 62-year-old actor talks about the drama coach who helped him find his "Damages" character, Arthur Frobisher.
"We read some lines together and he told me basically: 'You're a nice actor; you know where this is supposed to go, and you're going to take me there. But you're playing an arrogant billionaire who could give a rat's ass about anybody else. Maybe you'll say one line and you won't say the next. F*** 'em.'
"There's an arrogance and entitlement to my acting style now. It was very liberating."

Only a few minutes ago, the first season of HBO's freshman comedy Bored to Death concluded with its eighth episode, entitled "Take a Dive." The episode, one of my favorites yet, managed to be both sincere and funny at the same time. The same can be applied to most of the first season, which follows generally sweet Jonathan Ames, a floundering novel writer in dire economic straits, in his second job, moonlighting as a private detective. He is joined by his best friend, comic book artist Ray Huesten, and his boss, magazine editor George Christopher, in his various misadventures of cases.
Of course, Bored to Death didn't really have a chance to fail. It was placed in such prime television real estate that to fail, it would have had to be extremely, terribly awful. Which it wasn't. It actually managed to be the funniest show on television Sunday night, even out-laffing Curb Your Enthusiasm,...

Or at least he's giving Jon Hamm a run for his hard liquor-soaked money. My sudden and unexpected love for HBO's Bored To Death has blossomed in the form of a few tiny blond underarm hairs I'll be letting grow out all season as an homage to Ted Danson's character, George Christopher (pictured). I currently can't decide whether my favorite line from last night's episode, "The Case of the Stolen Skateboard," was Christopher's explanation to Jason Schwartzman's Jonathan that "It's all organic game -- rabbits that have been shot naturally in the woods, that sort of thing" or...

I've caught the first two episodes of HBO's Bored to Death, and while I'm not totally in love with the show (yet), the cast is impressive enough to keep me coming back for more.
The three main characters are Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman), a struggling writer who leads a double life as a private detective; George Christopher (Ted Danson), the editor of Edition magazine and Jonathan's sometimes employer (and pot supplier); and Ray Hueston (Zach Galifianakis), a talented cartoonist who's Jonathan's best friend.
There's plenty of street creds in the other players, too, including Kristen Wiig, Jenny Slate, Heather Burns, Olivia Thirlby, and Trieste Kelly Dunn. Based on all of these folks, as well as the quirky film noir vibe, it seems like a can't-miss TV series. Let's put it this way: I've enjoyed the first two episodes, and will tune in for more to see where it goes.

Don't worry, a full recap of HBO's new series Bored to Death will be posted tomorrow. For now, here's just a taste of what the show was about.
Jonathan Ames is a down-on-his-luck writer, who is stuck writing his second novel, which he calls the hardest. After his girlfriend leaves him because of his alcoholism and recreational drug use, Jonathan discovers an old detective novel, and, inspired, puts an ad on Craigslist advertising himself as a private detective.
Jonathan confides his breakup with his best friend, comic book artist Ray, who is very unsympathetic and cares more about his own problems than Jonathan's. Jonathan is also forced to deal with his boss, George Christopher, who is constantly asking Jonathan for drugs.
Jonathan gets a call from a girl named Rachel, who believes that her sister has been kidnapped by her shady boyfriend Vincent, a British songwriter and drug addict. Jonathan agrees to take the case,...

"When in doubt, have a man come through the door with a gun in his hand." - Raymond Chandler The twin specters of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett preside over the action on HBO's new comedy series Bored to Death. The series, which launches later this month, stars Jason Schwartzman as alcoholic novelist Jonathan Ames, a struggling writer who, after getting dumped by his girlfriend (Olivia Thirlby), takes out an ad on Craigslist as an unlicensed private detective. As portrayed by the charismatic Schwartzman, Jonathan is a lovable loser of a 30-year-old man and he seems to drift through life in a state of arrested development, much like his boss George Christopher (Ted Danson) and comic-book illustrator best friend Ray (Zach Galifianakis) to varying degrees. The best word to describe him would be hapless: between his white wine and pot addictions and emotional adolescence, he's the portrait of 21st century malaise.
